I find the feeling of "being watched" fascinating. It's something we've all likely experienced, but I don't understand the mechanics of it at all. Since this sensation is very much a recurring theme in reported SQ experiences, I find it all the more fascinating.
I can't say how many times I've been working hard, totally absorbed in writing code, etc., then felt eyeballs on my back, turned around, and there's my girlfriend in the doorway, watching me. For whatever reason, I knew she was there.
On the other hand, many times I've been watched by someone and had no idea they were there until I, by chance, happend to look in their direction.
'Tis strange, no? Actually, it's interesting for something to be perceived so universally, yet still be so nebulous. In fact, I have no idea if there is a even name for the sensation that something is watching you.
People reporting SQ incidents again and again describe a stark feeling of being observed. I wonder what is to be found if one considers this sensation.
1) The sensation is a "hindsight effect" in which, after the fact, one attempts to make more sense out of something by "filling in the blanks". "Yeah, looking back, I knew something was watching me........"
2) The sensation is triggered by sensory cues beneath our level of conscious perception. Perhaps we hear or smell something that triggers this process, yet we can't make the conscious association because the stimulus is too weak.
3) There is a process working that is beyond the current understanding of human abilities.
4) The whole thing is spurious, simply a product of our minds, and has no external aspects. Well,. I guess this fits with #1.
Back in 1996, I had such an experience while fishing Cooper Lake, TX, in the wee hours. Things went from completely normal to a severe case of the Willies a-plenty in seconds, and I still have no idea why. Nothing else strange occurred - it was (possibly) unusually quiet at the time, but the whole night had been very peaceful, so that says nothing. I was very safe in an extremely nice, solid, and fit boat about 100 feet offshore in a completely desolate area. Protection, in the form of a quality firearm, was an arm's reach away. The area was like home away from home to me, and I don't get squirrelly in the outdoors anyhow. so I was very comfortable there.
So, I went from fishing normally to hair standing on end, pulse increased, dry mouth - classic fight or flight response - in far less than one minute. The feeling was so strong it was PROFOUND. I sat down and smoked a cigarrette and the feeling grew stronger. Goosebumps and the whole nine yards. Then, it faded away and I went back to enjoying the amazing topwater lure bass bounty I had the good fortune to find that night. Copious spotlighting with the Q-Beam revealed nothing.
There strongly appears to be a SQ population in this area (Commerce, TX, Sulphur River bottoms), but to try and make an association based on this would be logically impossible.
I am fascinated with this and would greatly appreciate some shared knowledge. Anybody know anything about such things? Good day to all.
