The hubby and I were out and about in the woods most of the day today and he reminded me of something we saw a few years ago that was unusual.

We have a ground blind for deer hunting on the banks of a spring fed creek. 7 or 8 years ago, he and I were hunting the blind together and we saw a solid white squirrel on a tree near the blind. It was storing acorns and beech mast for the winter. The very next year, we were hunting the blind again and saw a grey squirrel with 2 little ones near the same tree. One of the babies was grey and the other one was solid white.

Hi

Jaylee that is pretty cool, I love any kind of wild life, It reminds me of a time me and my wife saw a doe in our back yard, We don't have many deer around our house, But this one day i heard her yell to me there is a dear in the yard, So i came right over to the back door and watched her slowly make her way out into the yard, I went out side and watched as the doe was just grazing, My wife was getting a bit brazing and trying to get close, Just then a large buck came over a small hill and looked right at my wife, i yelled at her to get out of there but she had already seen him, Man you should have seen her run across the yard back in to the house, We don't have a lot of experience with large wild animals so it was pretty cool but scary

37 people?? new_weirdsmiley.gif I'm assuming those were all job-related finds and not just accidental...

I love the idea of what you're doing with your dog though... I mean, they gotta die, right?

37 people- all job related, actually the thought of just running into a human body in the woods kinda creeps me out. And yes, I am assuming that BF does die and is not an inter-dimensional being.

Hello again,
adding more,

In the summer of 1999, i worked on the Blue Ridge
Parkway in North Carolina.

During that period i caught a MOLE,
and fed chipmunks and Skunks regularly.

Saw boocoo snakes. Seems like there was a pair under
every rhodendendron(sic) bush !

Saw a mama black bear and her cub several times.

Heard lots of unexplained noises during the night but
we were not under a controlled situation,so
it could have been drunks in the campgrounds,
or bears having a bad day. scratchhead.gif

More to come,

i want to share an incident a friend had happen to him this spring turkey season.one late morning he was positioned behind a good sized tree stump which was between the tom he had been calling in from several hundred yards and still out of gun range but coming and fast.he was sitting on a small folding stool using a box call when all of a sudden this young bobcat comes over the tree stump and lands in his lap.the cat was surprised as much as him.his reaction flung the bobcat several feet in the air which did not harm it for he saw it hauling ass as he fell off of the stool.needless to say old tom made it thru another day and bubba had to get clean britches and maybe that young bobcat learned also believe it or not he said it happened so fast he did not get a scratch on him.just a simple story for a simple mind.

About two weeks ago, I made the drive East from home for a day of hiking in Big South Fork, National River and Recreation Area, up on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee. It’s a pretty big tract of wilderness, as far as the Eastern US goes… about 125,000 acres, and managed by the National Park Service. This place is heavily wooded 2nd and 3rd growth, and for the most part, used primarily by equestrians, although there are plenty of hiking-only trails that rarely get used.
As always, I brought my trusty dog along with me, and in the BSF, I let him off-lead because there’s little chance I’ll run into another person, and if I do, the dog is pretty mellow and doesn’t tend to bother folks much.
So here we head off into the forest, heading down a logging road, and maybe a mile in when the dog gets a whiff of something and starts tracking through the underbrush, hot on the scent of some poor critter.
Not paying a lot of attention really, I practically step on top of a ruffed grouse, which flushed and scared the living bejesus out of me. Pretty rare birds around those parts, actually.
No sooner did that happen, I see my dog simply bolt into the forest like he’s ready for an attack on something. He crests a small hill and is out of sight when all of a sudden I hear what sounds like shreaking or screaming from that very direction. So very loud, and so very disturbing was the noise, that I immediately felt concern for the dog’s safety, so I took off running in that direction hoping he hadn’t gotten himself hurt or killed. To this point, I was not afraid, I was just running, ducking branches and hopping logs, trying to find my dog. I could hear a ruckus still as I was running, and felt I was getting closer, but couldn’t see the forest for the trees, literally.
I then busted through a thicket in front of me, and into little clearing, where, very much to my horror, my eyes caught glimpse of a sight so frightening, I nearly pissed myself right there.
Running directly at me was a large black object. Coarse dark hair covered its body and rage filled its eyes. Clearly this was the largest animal I’d ever seen up close, and it was angry and coming right for me, not 30 yards away at a full gallop, crashing through the underbrush and snarling like a wolverine.
Now, this was one of those “fight or flight” moments you’re always hearing people talk about. I’d never experienced one before, but definitely the “flight” response won over, because, before the words “Oh” and “Sh*t” had completely left my lips, I was in a dead sprint in the opposite direction. I could hear the beast behind me, but I ran away like a little girl at a speed I could not recreate today or any other day, unless under very similar circumstances, and did not look back. As I was still running, and getting back near the logging road, I felt the presence of something behind me getting closer. I felt I was being gained upon as the crashing behind me got louder and louder and louder, and at the moment I felt it was on my heals, my dog actually passed me up in a similar retreat and left me in the dust as he hastily left the area. Not dead I guess.
I turned to look behind me as I hit the logging road… and nothing was there. My heart was about to hurl itself out of my chest, and my lungs gasped for air while the lactic acid in my thighs burned. The dog then ran back up to me from out of the woods wagging his tail, seemingly glad for having survived the ordeal. It was a new experience for the both of us, being chased by a Wild Boar like that. Holy crap!

My dog just had puppies Febuary 4 2008 and i kept 2 of them.I plan on training these two puppies just for tracking and i am hoping i can use them for tracking the big guy.I know that it will take some work but i think that they will be able to because they show very good sign. They are very smart and they show no fear as puppies with bigger dogs.If you have any suggestions I am willing to listen .

I believe that I would die with my Pups if it came down to them getting killed.I love them way to much just as much as I love there Dad.I will never throw more at them then they could handle. These Pups I am seeing that they know thier limits and when they have some fear they hide behind me and use me as shelter at time .It is usually when they greet an overly aggressive dog that they hide behind me.There Dad hardly winks an eye at an agressive dog all he does is stare at them and holds his ground but never barks or growls at the agressive dogs.He has had is dealings with the big guy and already has beef with the creatures but there was time that he was very scared and hid close to me trembling .

today at 10:53am on hwy 19 south of ellaville ga i came upon a canadian geese pair with 3 offspring crossing the highway moving from one beaver pond to another.i had to come to a complete stop to allow for the wee ones to get across.the parents took up defenses front and rear of the small crew as my large service truck crowded them as it came to a stop.it really made my day to see this i just wished i could have had my camera because i had a great close-up view.

Hi

That is pretty cool thumbup.gif It just reminded me of the spot down at the water front here in Plymouth, MA Right across from the Mayflower II, there is a place in the road were the ducks cross, it stops everyone, folks take pictures and kids laugh, Some times 3 family's will come across at the same time, Really makes ya think how they would do that together smile.gif, i was driving along one day and kinda was looking at the scenery ( chicks ) when i seen this little girl put her hands up high and yell, i just hit the brakes, A few ducklings were crossing right in front of me and i didn't see em ( cause of the chicks ) man almost wrecked a lot of folks entire day, From now on i always go slower for the better view and safety , It happened right at the green crosswalk

ran into two bald eagles a few weeks ago, and my neighborhood has an overflow of white tails. Beyond that, big hairy monkey men remain at large.

Well, all my life I have had a fascination with bears!
I have ridden, and walked the woods for years in hopes of seeing a bear to no avail.
But then 2 weeks ago I see my first bear! new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif While driving to work scratchhead.gif
He or she was a little red bear! I guess he was trying to see across the road, But when he saw me, he turned and ran back into the woods!
Then last Sunday, on the road again rolleyes2.gif at around 10pm, I saw a much larger bear!!
He stood on the side of the road rocking back and forth shaking his head as if he or was warning me to move on! He was black with a white "Y" on his chest and the strange thing was his eyes glowed blue scratchhead.gif scratchhead.gif Do bears eyes glow blue when hit with a light????

Two days ago on the Fourth of July I was in my backyard chipping a few golf b*lls around. It was about 4 pm and the sound of fireworks in the community were increasing even though it wasn't dark yet. I live next to a ravine that includes a creek, very wooded and dark. I heard some crashing around and thought it might be some deer that live in the area. I walked to the edge of the ravine and looked down and saw the brush and saplings directly below swaying around as something was moving through them. It entered a clearing and I saw it was a black bear, probably 200#. It stopped, ate a few leaves, then rambled up the creek out of sight.

I've got raccoons, squirrels, owls, hawks, deer, but this is my first bear on my property. I'm keeping a close watch on my pet goats now.

I've never seen a bear here in the wild though there has been a couple of reports of them. Even with those Canadian black bears they released down here, no bears. They're probably back in Canada by now. wink.gif

Why you thet release black bears in your area? You have tons of them in the states and it's not like there endangered? scratchhead.gif

I've encountered a lot of different animals, including wolves, moose, bighorn sheep, wild burros, many types of birds, black bear, lions and other African animals, so can't list them all here. My most memorable encounters are the following: the wolf.. This was back in the 70's in the UP of Michigan when wolves were very uncommon in the state. We lived near the western end, bordering with WI. It was morning and we were driving home from church. The wolf was on the of the road near some railroad tracks, just sitting there staring at us as we stopped the car to look. I can still see its eyes in my head, 30 years later, they were very compelling and seemingly intelligent.

The mountain lion: I was living in San Diego area at the time, and walking on a horse trail in a canyon area surrounded by apartment buildings and houses within city limits. I spotted what I thought was a fox, it had fox-like ears and was watching me from about 30-40 yards away. I thought 'cool, a fox', as it is rare to see them (not sure they live out there even). I stopped to observe and that's when it turned its head to the side, revealing a most cat-like nose (blunt, not pointed like a fox). I also had noticed some odd 'clown-like' markings on its face... At this point I realized I was watching a mountain lion and the adrenaline shot thru me. I couldn't move for a few minutes, just in shock... though mountain lions are common out there, I never in my life expected to run into one, especially in an area with so many people around Looking back, it is easy to understand how it got there, through a corridor of canyons and undeveloped land. I was able to watch it for a good 10-15 minutes as it sunned itself in the late afternoon. It wouldn't look at me directly, but clearly knew i was there. When I turned away for a minute, it got up and walked behind a bush. It was very cool, once I calmed down enough... this was one time in my life when I really had a hard time believing my eyes, so think if I ever saw a bigfoot, would feel something like this, only it would be much more intense.

The people: surprised a homeless guy from his bed as my friend and I hunted for beetles for the Natural History Museum. We were hunting for them in the dark as this particular kind of beetle only comes out at night. There also was the guy who interrupted our sleep in a campground near Jackson WY, he was clearly on 'something', raging, screaming, puking in his truck next to our tents, all night long. We were too terrified to move, and couldn't get out due to incliment weather.... that was one terrifying night! We just hoped he would not notice us and we'd get out alive. Indeed, he had recovered by morning and we heard him humming and whistling to himself as he drove off... nice!

This isn't close to the level of encounter some of you folks have had with different animals, but I thought it was funny.

About a week ago I finished up mowing my lawn and parked my rider in it's spot. My grill, just a little 18"x18" Walmart job with the little vent on top, is stored close by and I looked up just in time to see a little brownish-black mouse go scooting down the slope of the lid and then bail off into the grass. My dogs chased him down and he promptly became lunch, but that made me wonder. I went back to the grill and popped open the lid. Inside was a MUCH larger reddish-brown mouse sitting in a pile of pink insulation. He twitched his whiskers and peered up at me totally unafraid, then reality must've hit---he panicked and zipped down underneath the wire cooking surface and looked up at me ---as if he was really hid. I cracked up and shut the grill. Better in the grill, than under my house where he obviously got that insulation. Over the last few days we've had a war over the grill. I find him gone and shut the vent. He comes home from his escapades, reopens the vent and sleeps in a nice bed. Stinker. And, the grill does stink, too. Gotta get a new next year I suppose.

What I thought was truly interesting was 2 different species of mice obviously rooming together---does that happen often?? They were truly the Odd Couple.

Hi

Firefly: Try putting some mothballs around the areas were you want to get rid of the mice, It works pretty good, I find them all the time in the engines of lawn tractors, I will spare the details of what condition there in after the engine had been started, Looks like Wickie has already got ya sick, Just a friendly reminder they don't taste good so keep them out of the Grill coverlaugh.gif

Hubby and I were watching the birds out front and I caught a glimpse of a deer through the fallen tree. I went out back with the camera and started sneaking up on her. She was munching on some madrone leaves when I came up. She then started walking up to me! This little black tail hangs around our property all year and her coat stays this same dark color all year. The other deer lighten up in the summer, but she is always dark so the girls named her "dark doe" (very original!)

She got pretty close to me and heard the camera when I snapped the photo. She turned around and took off at a gentle trot. No panic, just decided she was too close lol. The deer have been eating the apples left in the trees out front. There is a large buck leaving tracks, but we haven't been able to catch a glimpse of him yet.

Very cool Red, we had a 4 point buck wander through the back yard a couple weeks ago, something that doesn't happen here to much with us being in the middle of "town" such as it is here.

The following picture was taken at Anzo Borrego State Park last weekend west of the Salton Sea. It was on the road up to Julian before it starts up the hill.

Dessert Bighorns. There was about 8 of them and a group of people were at the side of the road with telescopes. The ram was on the other side of the hill. I would guess they were about a half mile away.

It was a little early in the season but there were flowers all over the ground. The best place was northwest of the town about maybe 5 miles.

Some guy spread giant statues all over the desert of wild animals made out of steel. There must have been a hundred of them. There were ancient elephants and camels and all sorts of strange statues. I am not sure what this is.

Sometimes that squirrel looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a squirrel is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't even seem to be livin'... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. -Quint on Jaws(sort of)

Canada: White tail deer, coyotes, raccoons, rabbits galore, porcupines, i've got about 5 big grey squirrels living in my shed, chipmunks, groundhogs, beaver (came out of a bar one night and one was walking down the sidewalk on the other side of the street LOL), an otter, skunks, a weasel of some kind (ermine i think), muskrat, kingfishers, barn owls, hawks, most Ontario reptiles, a hellbender (rare find)....I've never seen a bear or a wolf yet, although apparently a young black bear was up a tree in someones backyard who lived just a few blocks away from my work.

Florida: Anoles galore, a school of cow nosed? rays, dolphins in a bay near Clearwater, brown pelicans, spoonbills and whatever animals i saw at Busch Gardens

Mexico: Geckos everywhere, Spiney tailed iguanas everywhere! (big 4 footers just sitting around outside the hotel!), flamingoes, another lizard species i can't name right now, i saw alot of native animals at a ecopark i went to. I'm adding a picture of one of the coolest experiences of my life..........

They're quite the critters that's for sure, the one I found was in it's death throws at the surface. They don't swim up from the bottom often, especially in the heat of the day when I found mine.

It was a cool experience JayleeD! A bit pricey but totally worth it. I got to swim with them too, two of them stuck thier noses on the bottoms of my feet and pushed me through the water at pretty high speeds! Fast enought that my I nearly lost my swimming shorts! new_lmaosmiley.gif

What a great picture. Not only the deer, but the entire setting with the snow and all. LOVE IT. . .I will say that is one shaggy deer! I've never seen one wit all that hair, probably cause I live in VA. Just saw 4 deer in our front parking lot, that hang out a lot right there. And we live in the middle of the city, but they are every where. I saw a huge flock of Turkey about a mile from us a few yrs back, again right in the middle of the city, right across the street from the 2nd biggest mall in Roanoke.

Not to ramble, but ALL these picss that everyone has posted are GREAT!!
