Full Version: BF's foul odor

I have thought of this before, but I was watching Jay Leno last night and one of his guests was an animal handler. She had a small primate like a Lemur or something with her and was telling Jay of their scent marking.

An interesting aspect I have found is that a lot of mammals have the ability to scent mark.

Much like your dog whizzing on a fence perhaps BF's BO is nothing more than their ability to scent mark. Let you know it's their territory.

Thoughts?

Hey there,
I think that might be a possibilty, although I've read reports of sightings where there is no smell whatsoever....Could Sassy have glands similiar to a skunk, and use the stench as a deterent at certain times......

Well, you may be on to something there. As far as I know (with my limited intelligence), of all the mammals that I can name, they ALL (at least the males)scent mark. I'm not mentioning humans because I don't classify us as an animal. There could be another explanation also. What if they did it as a WARNING? As if to say, "hey, theres something very strong over here.., beware". Skunks will spray in self defense, but most sprayings occur as a warning. Maybe BF does the same? How many sightings with smell occur when there is a dog present? I know not all, but perhaps a good enough number to add some credit to the thoery. Maybe even add in the suprise close range encounter.., "Suddenly, it was right in front of me, then I smelled this gawd-awful rotten stink.." You know how it goes from there. Curious to hear what some of the expirienced BFer's think about this idea.

I don't think that they scent mark their territory, or it would be a lot easier for us to find on....just use your nose and follow the scent....I do believe that they use the stink, as you replied, to warn that they are there...when that doesn't work then you hear the vocal scream as well as the tree shaking and the like..........

Gorilla scent glands have been discussed numerous times as a possible comparison to the stench associated with some bigfoot sightings. What would be interesting is if there were a documented sighting of a lone femal sasquatch emitting a stench, because as far as I am aware only the male gorillas posses the gland.

Well, we certainly arent reptiles, although we do posess a reptilian brain section, according to some educated types.

So ... just what are we, if not apes ??? (dont you DARE say some spaceman drop off social project, ... hate to hafta slap ya) laugh.gif

Nope.., I sure wouldn't say that. But I will say that we are human, and human only. Remember all the talk about the missing link? Well, there is no missing link.., we DID NOT evolve from apes. We have been human all along and we will never evolve into anything else. But this is not what this topic is about.

No. But you draw up a point, and in my humble opinion, one which needs to be challenged.

Regardless of the discovery of a "missing link", we are, anatomically, apes. No doubt. We share many genes with other primates, we are built like many apes. Homo Homo Spapiens are a memebr of the "Ape" family. We ARE apes. And some would argue who is more "intelligent" wink.gif

We "may" also share genetic codes with our hairy friends, sasquatch. Who knows ?

We certainly didnt "just appear" on this planet ...
