Feb 3rd Work took me up past Port Angeles today .In the area of Joyce Wash. I think Makheet gave a couple of reports in this area ,anyways its definite 'BF' country .About 20 miles past P.A. take the Eden Valley road, of hwy 112 .Nice little valley, houses on 20, 30 acre plots. MTNS rise some 600 to 800 ft up very step ,some clearcuts some old growth.anyways as im finishing up i here some wood knocking .definite wood on wood ,had that kinda hollow sound to it. No distinct rythem .lasted for maybe 2 minutes appox 1/2 to 3/4 miles up the valley .It could have been anything .but was definite wood on wood, knock sound . My question is what is 'BF' wood knocking about ,communication.recreation or frustration. JUST ASKING BE NICE..........LOL

I am sure it wasn't a woodpecker as I have seen and heard lots of them up close (fascinating birds). I can't speculate on what it means other than communication for some reason. What I heard was a knocking followed by an answer farther away.

I think it means one of several things.

I believe i have been challenged by woodknocking, like "Who are you? Friend or foe?" kinda thing, single whap, much like the single "whoop".
On a couple of occasions, in areas with recent activity, i have heard these as i walk into an area. I have no other explaination to give.

It can be a sort of morse code, who, which direction, human or sassi.
Who really knows ???? When i finally get one to sit down and share coffee or hot chocolate with me around a campfire, and i remember to ask, maybe then, i will get an answer.

I think the knock's meaning depends on the situation.

Hunting deer with your sasquatch buddies, maybe a knock means "I'm in position downwind, spook the deer this way."

Foraging for food, maybe a knock means, "I'm eating marmot on this side of the mountain right now." reply knock "That's cool, I'm eating berries over here."

See a human, maybe a knock means, "Heads up, possible trouble entering the forest!"

Go into another sasquatch's territory, maybe a knock means, "Just passing through and letting you know, nothing to get excited about."

I think wood knocking is a covert method of determining if "the new homonid walking around my woods" (i.e. us) is a BF or not.

A BF gets wind of some scent, comes across a human trail, or hears some stomping around or human vocalizations and says, "Hey, I'll give the secret BF wood knock and listen for the proper response." The knocking to anyone other than a BF sounds like a woodpecker or any number of other critters or maybe just the wind. To a BF, it sounds like a greeting or query or challenge.

It just so happens humans are becoming better listeners in the woods and are starting to hear these purposeful noises.

Now that's sensible!!

i said i was sorry i coundt help it....... just hard to believe some of these reports ,always a excuse for equipment failure to having something go wrong It gets to a point

Yes, ... you could have helped it. Its called "self control". And an individual must be held accountable for thier own actions. This is the real world not your high school. Just because it "hurts your feelings" or "lowers your self esteem", doesnt mean its not going to be held against you. It will be. Promotions and pay raises depend on good performence, not because you feel you "deserve" it. The real world is harsh, its unfair. Things happen when your not prepared for them. (haveing gear in your research vehicle, not your car, for instance)

But because of your own failures and short comeings, you lash out at others. Thats very hypocritical. People with your attitude give those of us who work hard at this, a bad name. Its also your attitude that keeps good people with a report, to stay silent. It keeps good photos behind closed doors, spoken of in low whispers between life-long trusted friends.

Yes, show us your stack of recordings, pictures, anything you may have, since your the "expert".

Now if you're not too busy acting tough where's all that evidence? I mean, if you can put someone down for not having a recorder, surely that means you yourself are always well prepared and capturing the best quality material to post for peer review.

i am fairly new as far as having a serious daylight sighting . i didnt even know this forum existed . what i observed first is a lot of bashing to anyone who dared to have a different opinion than the certain little cliques around here have. like texrdwolf ,He was just asking a simple question .but was afraid to get his head cut off ................that is a shame..
