My sister has recently moved to Missouri. She sent me an article from their local newspaper about a tall dark hairy creature that they call Momo that has been roaming the Missouri wilderness for years since the early 1970's to present time. They describe Momo as Huge hairy hulking creature, half man half ape, pumkin shaped head with glowing orange eyes. Aggressive in nature that antagonizes humans and kills animals. The creatures have three toed footprints and three fingered hands. Most of the sightings have occurred near Louisana, MO in Pike county. Also described as 6-9 feet tall with long scraggly smelly hair. This creature also screams like a panther.
Is anyone here on the forums from Missouri??? Missouri has had a slew of sightings reports all over this state. I have to get a map to start recording all these areas. As well as topo info to find all the deep wooded swampy areas with rivers, streams etc...... since I will be visiting my sister there, I will be able to keep my eyes open for our hairy friend!

I am. I used to live in Clarksville MO just 15 mile south Louisiana MO. I lived there from 1970 untill the fall of 1983. Most of the sightings were around Star Hill. So named because of the huge star at the top. It was aka Marstoff Hill. SP? The star can be seen durning the Fall and Winter Seasons.
A brother of mine hunts/ researches that area around there. He stated that one night not to far from the old Rock Quarry located just out side of town, saw something huge standing under a light. He was close enough to tell it wasn't wearing clothes. He was making a nature call at the time. He said when he went to zip up, it was gone. He saw tracks around the light pole but couldn't make them out. That happen a few years back. What part of MO does she live in?
The fella in the first report (who said he saw it on star hill) runs bigfootbusters. I heard all the stories about it from the time it was seen in 1972. Hes a little out there from time to time. I know that a few years later around 1974 or so, Louisiana MO had closed off Star Hill. It has been said that the posting that was put up is still there stating
ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK Now, whether thats true or not, it may have been for the sake of drawing tourism there. I know after that story made headlines, there was always a Mo Mo side walk sales to be found.

There have been other sightings at different times. Louisiana is still the same, it hasn't changed much at all. The area around there isn't built up as one might find. Bowling Green has had it share of sightings. Most sightings occur futher south such as Springfield, Rolla and so forth. Let me know what else you find. Good Luck on your search.

My Family lives in St. Charles MO. around the Lake St. Louis area. St. Charles had some sightings but not much. The last report was late 60's early 70's or so. All the towns listed are north/northeast of St. Louis. You want to look Southwest, AR. boarder, and the OK. boarder. That is where most of the sightings have occured. Some occurances have been in the middle of the state also. Bush Wild life is located out side of St. Charles...I have heard, HA HA , that something strange has been goin on around there on and off. What that is is anyones guess. The Ozarks would be a good place to look.

I am in northeast Missouri about 60 miles west of Louisiana, MO. Been here two years now. I have made a couple of scouting trips into that area and one afternoon investigating trip just northeast of Louisiana.
Didn't find any typical supposed BF sign there, but at one point, the woods went totally quiet, one of my dogs (German shepherd) abandoned me and hauled ass back to the truck, and the other dog (big Malamute) cowed down at my feet whining and obviously was terrified of something. I did NOT feel that I was in danger, but I did get that "being watched" feeling. I kept looking around very carefully and slowly and didn't see, hear, or smell a thing. But I could hardly walk because of my dog cowering under my feet, and she was getting more and more frightened. Finally, because I was alone, and in a remote area, I figured I had better heed the advice of my dogs and leave. She was very glad I made that decision and nearly towed me back to the truck.
Do I think MoMo or BF was there? Don't know. But something sure had both of my dogs spooked. And I do refer to them as my BF Early Warning System.
Belle & Sailgirl, I would like to meet other BF'ers in the area. Versatile is outside of KC and we did the dog attack investigation a couple weeks ago that is covered in another thread in the Media section of this forum. MoKen is in StL and I've been in the field with him a few times. I have been plotting sighting reports on topo maps of the state and have figured out where the concentrations of reports are. Also, there has been some recent activity in the north part of St. Charles county.
ontheloose is a friend too. I've been in the field with her in Oklahoma for sure, and possibly also Mississippi. Can't remember for sure off the top of my head.
PM me if you want to.

I grew up in South Dakota. There were lots of sightings along the Missouri River at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, just up stream from Momo. Maybe it is the same beast. Damn Dirty Ape investigated the sightings for Peter Byrne (back in the 70s) if memory serves.

Sailgirl I remember the numerous sightings of "MoMo" during the 70's which occured on both sides of the Mississippi. Even when sightings occured in SW Illinois they attributed them to "MoMo". I lived in Charleston, MO, which is down in the "Bootheel" of the state, SE Portion for a short time. I was surprised to find a lot of woods and swamp land there that was uninhabited. Although I never had any experiences in MO myself, there was a lot of land that appeared as though it might be good habitat for one.

Sailgirl, yes, I'm also from Missouri. I live in St. Charles County. I've just recently become involved in the Bigfoot hunt and I'm trying to scope out good habitats. I have property in the northeastern Ozarks surrounded by 13,000 acres of conservation land and several hundred thousand acres of Mark Twain National Forest. I'm looking around that area when I'm there for any signs but haven't found anything conclusive. This past summer I went camping near Mark Twain Lake in Ralls County which is bordered by Pike County where the Louisiana sightings took place in the 70's. I still think that is a great area to look. I only camped from Friday night to Sunday afternoon and saw 17 deer while hiking through the woods. They are everywhere (good food source). What struck me most about the area though is how different the forest was from the Ozarks. I remember pausing at one point and reflecting on how much it reminded me of the pictures I've seen of the northwest forests. Very lush and green. The BFRO just posted several sightings from Missouri, one as recent as June 2004. With all the forest fires out west I would think a lot of animals would be roaming for new habitat. It may sound far-fetched to think they would come this far but recently a mountain lion killed in Oklahoma was wearing a radio collar and was traced back to Wyoming. It had travelled over 600 miles. So, I guess anything is possible.

I too belive the range of these creatures could be quite huge. Anyone that has driven North or South in Missouri can see how much cover there is just along the highways. I have a buddy that was a USAF pilot, he said anyone with the evasion and survival knowledge he had learned one could probably travel easily from Texas to Canada without detection. And that was using streams and tributaries for navigation and using natural and man-made cover, plus travelling at night. Is it posible we could be seeing the same family group in several states for many generations following food sources and fleeing territorial infringement?

I think there is a reluctance to come forward with possible sightings or activity of any kind relative to Bigfoot because of the general populations opinion that we are all wierdo's. If anyone comes across any activity in this area, please let me know...

I thought this was interesting to add regarding the habitat in Missouri. It was all but destroyed by the early 1900's due to logging. What may have lived here in large numbers then would have had to leave. This was true of the bear, wolves, mountain lions, and Bigfoot if he was here. The animals that weren't killed by humans were driven out by loss of habitat. I read a story written for one of the Missouri newspapers regarding the destruction of the Missouri forests in the late 1800's. There was a photo showing how it looked after the destruction ended. It looked like a wasteland. Nothing could have lived there. The deer had to be restocked. The bears eventually started coming back thanks to the Arkansas restocking program and just in the past few years it has been confirmed that the mountain lion is back on his own terms.
I don't know if this sort of forest destruction ever took place in the Pacific Northwest. Maybe that's one of the reasons that there seems to be a much larger population of Bigfoot there. The Missouri habitat has been restored. You know what they say, "If you build it, they will come."

IMO, there is a LOT more activity in the Missouri area than the number of "official" reports would indicate...It just isn't discussed much.
I've had some "interesting" experiences myself recently...I can't go into the details, though, because they involve a third party whose permission I DON'T have to discuss them directly. He's contemplating whether or not to post something about it himself, and if he does I'll add my bit.

Southwest Missouri...

Actaully, I just remembered one incident I CAN share.
This would have been in the early 80s. I used to spend a week with my grandparents at their farm (also in the southern part of Missouri) during the summer. One particular summer, I remember things being "different". I always played around the house, barn, and pond area (all close to each other), but never any farther than that (mostly due to fear of snakes). That whole week, I just felt "watched"...it was really quite unnerving. I'd NEVER felt that way on the farm before...EVER. At night (I slept on the couch in the living room) I just COULDN'T be anywhere near the windows, and considering the door to the side porch was one of those big glass ones I kept my eye on THAT too.
I never saw anything, or heard anything at night...and I'd convinced myself that I was just "spooking" because of the book I'd been reading (ironically enough a book about Bigfoot). The next to last, or maybe it was the last day, I was sitting in one corner of the living room (daytime) when something just made the hairs on my neck stand up. I looked out the windows behind and to the side of me. About 40 yards or so away was where the treeline came closest to the house. There was this black SHAPE in amongst the trees. Not out in the open where I could get a good clear look, but definite none the less. I got into a nearby cabinet for a pair of binoculars my grandfather kept there, but when I focused on the area there was nothing there. By nothing I mean that there was no object in the space where I saw the shape, and there WAS something there previously. I am certain it was no trick of shadows.
That's my "not sure" encounter...I reported it to bfro once, but I fell out of contact with them and I don't think they ever posted my report...I ought to check my old emails and see if I can find a contact for their researcher...

Well,,,, since we are coming out of the closet so to speak.. here's my "not sure" encounter, and why I'm on this board and subject to this day, many years later... just can't seem to get it out of my mind...
When - Mid-70's
Where - Northeast Missouri
Who - My best friend and I… about 12 or 13 years old.
My best friend and I loved to hunt, fish and anything outdoors when we were growing up. After-all, in rural Northeast Missouri, there wasn't a lot going on back in those days.
Near the edge of town, there was an old county road that had become dilapidated and basically wasn't being used anymore. My friend and I referred to it as the "over-grown" road. One day, we decided we were going to venture down the old road and explore and build a fort. Back in those days, building a fort was great fun and occupied our time well.
Probably about a hundred yards down into the old road, there was a tiny creek about 4 foot deep and app. 20' wide. The county had built a small I-beam bridge for the cars to cross it. That's all there was, the frame and a couple of wooden planks (one for each tire.) All that was really left of it was the beams. As I recall, there might have been some wood left on the bridge, but mostly the metal beams. It was more or less a balance act to get across it. Like I said, it was only a few feet high as it was a small creek, so falling off the bridge would have been a short trip to the creek.
This particular day, we decided the best place to build our fort was on the opposite side of the old bridge. The brush was basically impassible on the other side and there were quite a few trees about the diameter of a baseball bat for us to use in the construction of our fort. Somewhere along the hand-me-downs, my dad had gotten an old German bayonet. It was a very heavy bladed knife and thus well suited for cutting branches and small trees. That was all we had with us that day.
After about 30 minutes of chopping away at the brush and some small trees, we had just sat down to take a break when we heard a large snapping sound coming from further down the road. Again, it was so thick you could barely see beyond about 6 feet. As I recall, it sounded like a medium size branch would sound if you broke it across your knee. We both heard it and looked in the general direction. A few moments later, we heard more snapping of branches, but this time, combined with crunching of leaves. It was something obviously walking through the brush. In an instant, it picked up the pace heading right where we were sitting taking our break. It sounded like it was running. If anyone in this forum has ever experienced “fight or flight” you will know exactly the sensation I am about to describe. Almost instantly, without even saying a word to each other or discussing what we thought it might be, my friend and I immediately jumped up and raced towards the bridge to get the heck out of there.
I crossed the bridge first, never looking back. My friend was directly behind me and made it across within seconds of me. Once on the other side, one of the old tire lanes was still evident and made a good path. We had gone about 50 feet when I heard my friend fall down behind me. He had gotten tangled up in a vine and hit the ground pretty hard. To this day, I vividly remember stopping dead in my tracks and turning around to see what had happened to him. When I looked back at him, he was about 10 feet behind me on the ground looking back at the bridge (obviously seeing if whatever it was, was in view behind us.)
When I turned around, all I saw was him on the ground, and something black in mid-stride jumping that damn bridge. Obviously, he saw the same thing and was already getting back up to continue our frantic run the hell out of there. We sprinted the entire way back into town to his parents house without once looking back over our shoulders again. I have no idea if it stopped chasing us once it got on the other side of the bridge, or what it was for that matter. The first thing his mom said when we got into his front door was “My goodness, what is the matter with you two boys, you are as white as ghosts!”
His mom was so disturbed by the way we looked and what we told her, that she called another one of our friend’s mom that lived nearby and told her what we had just experienced. Begrudgingly, the next day, they wanted us to take them out there where it happened. We stayed out in the pasture that was parallel to the old road and walked close to the bridge location but did not see anything. I do remember a skunky smell however, which now even raises the question more on what we saw that day. I’m 40 years old, married with three kids and work for a major communications company. Bigfoot haunts me to this day, or whatever it was.

I thought that I might add my two cents worth to this post. I am from Southwest Missouri, just outside Springfield, to be exact. There are more sightings in this area then have ever been reported. People around here just don't want to talk about it with strangers. When I was younger, I used to go around with a couple of friends and look into some of the sightings. I knew a lot of people in the rural areas, since that is where I grew up. I spent most of my youth hunting and fishing the Ozarks, and knew every river and stream in Laclede, Camden and Palaski counties. Just in those 3 counties, I collected a treasure of stories from old timers who would never have agreed to post them on the net, or to be revealed to outsiders. Some of these old places are still very close nit and unfriendly to anyone who doesn't live there. I used to keep a journal of all the stories, but I stopped checking into them after I got married. I'm afraid the journal is long gone, but my memory is still good. I remember most of them and would probably remember the rest, in time. I read those things over and over again. I moved around quite a bit after I got out of the Army, and I figure that is when I lost the journal, since a bunch of my stuff from those days remains unaccounted for. However, for that sake of sharing, I'd be glad to share the stories....I can even give locations, but not names. I did promise that to them. I wouldn't tell who they were. Since many of the stories came from "old-timers" back in the 1980's, I would guess most of them have passed on. I grew up in Laclede county area, but now live in Greene County and don't get back home much. I really should do that more. I miss camping and hunting those river valleys. I even had a few experiences of my own, along the Niangua River Valley.

But anyway...Hi Missourians!!! I was about to start a thread to find all missourians to discuss about bigfoot...cause I really dont have many people to discuss this with...except my wife and son and cousin...my wife didnt really know much about it but I kept telling her about all the sightings all around and now she is really interested too...we both think there must be something out there...be it large man or large ape...
Does missouri have its own Bigfoot club etc? when I move back I plan to do some investigations for myself...I was back at my in-laws this christmas and one day they said their neighbor nearby said they saw a black bear...I dont know if there are any black bears in moniteau county...but now to think about it...I might as well be a bigfoot...the other day I asked my wife's mom if they had seen anything more about the "bear" and there was none...so I asked if they had heard anything funny or seen any wild animals...none...theres a tiny creek that runs right behind their land...and leads to a large creek...we are pretty close to the missouri river...oh back to the story...she did say that my wife's cousin down the road had seen some Black Panther on top of his hay bails...and it would steal its dog food and the dogs never did dare to go near it...and those were sheepdogs that would bite the heels of his cattle....so all this has gotten my curiosity level much higher...please share more stories if you all know of any...especially any that happened near moniteau county...I read one that happended in Prairie Home....

Born & raised in south St. Louis myself. I remember the MOMO sighting from the 70s as well.
My best friend lives in Crawford county and there's a BF sighting listed in Cook Station, the "town" he lives in.
I talked to him about it and he said no one ever mentions anything like that. If it would have happened, he would have known about it.
And just think.....I spent COUNTLESS hours sitting in the woods in the dark during the mornings of deer season........

Your best bet would be around the Rock Quarry. I'm don't remember just where it is. I do know that it is somewhat away from the Mississippi. If coming in from Hwy 79 from St Louis, then it would not be too far into town. I know road is just located right before you get into town. The road would be to your left. It takes you through the country roads. This is where one of my brothers had his sighting a few years back.......
You might also try Star hill.....
If coming from the Ill side, then head towards Clarksville. The area in Clarksville you might want to check out is the bottoms.... Several Huge foot prints have been seen on the levy. There are a few farms located in the area and a Nursing home of sorts......
Don't know about the books.... You might want to try the Louisiana Press Journal. The Local News Paper. They might know where you can find books. Let me know when you go and I will get you in touch with someone who scouts that area.......
Good Luck!

West central missouri here. Between KC and Joplin. Momo stories and the movie mysterious monsters got me started on the bf subject. I work in St Clair Co. where a couple of bfro sightings took place. There seems to be an inrease in reports from the area west of and south of Springfield.Anyone in the area interested in exchanging info or forming our own group to look around, please feel free to pm or email me.

swieskan,
Just wondering if you have submitted your sighting to the BFRO? I think there is a lot more activity in the Midwest than people realize.

Hi guys and gals...anything new in missouri? I wil be back in missouri in about 2 months hopefully...
Hey swieskan...can you post your sighting here? I am really interested in hearing about some of the most recent Missouri sightings...
I believe there are way more sightings that reported...as a lot of folks dont bother to report and even if they see a bigfoot they keep it to themselves...and some might even respect it as part of the family of animals living there...
I think when I get back to missouri I am gonna start making some MOMO artwork...maybe if more people see it they might accept it and will be more willing to come open and talk about it...setting aside their fear of being ridiculed...

Hi Fellow Missourians:
If you search for some of my posts, I mention my notions on BF in Mo. Not that they're brilliant observations, but - -besides being too long-winded to repeat here- - they may pique your interests or provide some close to home spots for investigation.
Feel very free to PM me; very good thread, but the forum is too vast for such limited time to look for pertinent info regarding this specific region.
I wholeheartedly agree that MO has got quite a bit of good acreage for BF. Check out the StL county report from 1997 on the BFRO by Chesterfield Golf Club (formerly Ambo and no longer there) in the Creve Coeur bottoms, right across the MO river from St. Charles via the Page extension bridge. I could have been trying to squeeze in one last hole of golf the same time as the sighting, truly. That's my old stomping grounds, for what its worth. A desert of a golf course, but cheap and in beautiful country.
I'm also a Southwest MO (Springfield/Bolivar) native.
Thanks, and hello to all the sane, Show-Me folks in this thread! It's been a welcome relief of kindness.
