I'm in Jackson, just south of Yellowstone and GTNP. There have been a few sightings while I have lived here but I have always found them to be wishful thinking on the part of a tourist. The sightings in the east entrance/Cody area of Yellowstone though seem to be much more credible. When are you in the area?

Probably later this month through the middle to end of February...I should have a definite date by the middle of next week. The job is actually in Gillette, but I am planning to drive over to the Cody area and have myself a look around on one of my breaks from work (I'll be scheduled to work 3 night shifts in a row and then I should have at least a couple of days off).
Feel free to catch me in the chatroom anytime....I'm usually in there most evenings...

A couple of friends of mine work in Gillette in the coalbed methane industry. I'm from Laramie and went to school there. You should
definitely take a look around in the Bighorns and maybe the Wind Rivers (around Lander and Worland, even though they're out of the way). Some credible reports (including a shooting in the '70s) from there.

A shooting? Can you tell me more?

Apparently an adult male, about 8' tall, was harassing a family along the Popo Agie River in the Wind Rivers. It was screaming at night, coming around their house, and making a nuisance of itself. The father finally had enough and shot at it one night, then decided that he and his family weren't safe any more, so they
immediately moved away after reporting it to the Game and Fish in Cheyenne (rare case of a report being made and then followed up on). The head of the Game and Fish at the time and a friend of his (who I know as well) who's an anthro. professor at UW went out within a couple of days to check out the site. They found smashed brush where something big appeared to have moved through, hairs, and some blood right where the supposed shooting took place. No clear tracks.
They collected samples of both, then did some recon. in the area, finding lots of huckleberries and other such foodstuffs. Long story short, the hairs went to a mammal-researcher they both knew...yep...indeterminate...but probably primate. The blood is still in the possession of the Game and Fish guy, and hopefully, he can locate it so we can get some work done on it. Considering the multiple, qualified sources of this story, I'd place greater stock in it than any other I've heard about alleged shootings and blood, hairs, etc.

Medic............i know of friends that went to work in Cody from up here in Calgary and loved it so much they stayed. Tons of outdoor activity and not overwhelming crowds of people were the draw..........as far as Sasq.....sure why not beautiful country and some foothills and Mountains........have fun.

Wyoming has phenominal antelope hunting btw steve. Like, taking candy from a baby easy. Of course thats in the fall, but you would be able to see the Jackson Hole wintering herd of elk. I hear a few of the bulls there can push 400BC.

I leave Wednesday, and I'm kind of looking forward to it and then again I am kind of dreading it at the same time for some strange reason.
I will keep you all posted with anything interesting once I get out there.

Well, this will probably be my last post on here for a while (at least until I get my own internet access in Wyoming).....I guess I will talk to you all in a few days (maybe a couple of weeks). If anyone needs to reach me for some reason or just wants to chat send me an e-mail. I think that any contact with my friends will be most helpful, as this is going to be a very lonely trip for me since I am going to miss being around Jennifer and the rest of my family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Please keep me in your thoughts....You all will be in mine. If I come across anything interesting while I am out there, I will be sure to let you know. Catch you all later!

Well....I'm in Wyoming....and while I like the people here, and the hospital is one of the friendliest I have ever encountered, this town (Gillette) has got to be one of the most desolete places I have ever encountered. I'm hoping to get into the Western part of the state sometime next week, but only for a quick drive through- no hiking or anything as I have to wait to get all my camping gear. Depending on the weather, will depend on how much off-road looking I do once I get my camping gear. Talk to you all later, I have to head to work.

Gillette sucks!
Meth-heads and drunks abound, and the terrain is pretty damned bleak.
Fortunately, Sheridan and Buffalo are nearby...both really cool places.
The Bighorn Mtns. are spectacular in winter too.
Make sure you get a chance to explore around the northeast too...Devil's Tower is a great place to hike and see the sights!
Have a ball, man!!!

You're right on the comment about meth-heads and drunks. I'm beginning to think Indiana must produce most of the meth and the people here consume most of it. LOL Ah, the circle of life!
Well, the tentative schedule for next month is out and it looks like I should be able to check out the highway over by Cody and Yellowstone sometime around the middle of the month. It will be primarily a vehicle based surveillance (basically driving up and down that road and maybe some side roads if they are clear enough for the majority of the day and night trying to see if I see anything). There may be a little hiking involved but I'm not planning on getting too far from the road as I hear there is already a pretty good amount of snow on the ground.
The one problem I will bring up, that I have come across, is that nowhere around here seems to stock casting materials. I'm going to talk to a couple of the local dental offices and see if I can't buy some dental stone off of them to have on hand in case I find tracks, but I'm not sure how successful I would be at that.
If there is anyone from Colorado, Idaho, Utah or Montana, who would like to join me it would certainly make this a much more enjoyable trip. Anyone is welcome, if you'd like to come along please feel free to PM me and we can arrange a time and place to meet up.

Just got a copy of my schedule from work, and it looks like the most likely time for this trip is going to be 16 December to 20 December (chances are that I won't stay in the area the whole time, maybe just 2 days unless things get interesting (i.e. I start finding evidence or see a sasquatch)). The guy at the local camping supply store jokingly told me that if I need a name for this trip I could always call it "Operation Frostbite"- I didn't tell him what I was going to be looking for, cause he didn't seem likely to be too sympathetic to the idea of BF in Wyoming.
I'll keep you all posted.
By the way, I saw a bumper sticker today, I thought you might all appreciate: "WYOMING- Where the men are men, and the sheep run in fear!"

usafmedic45,
Good luck on your adventures! If you find anything fresh, I might be willing to come up to see if I can track it. Of course it's a looong drive from Ft. Collins, CO but if it's something good, I would consider it. I've been up through Cody but didn't get a chance to go into the mountains west of there. I was on my way to Red Lodge, MT at the time.
It seems like the Black hills in SD would have more sightings then they do? Maybe it's because there are many native americans in that area that don't see Bigfoot as such an odd thing and don't report it?

If I find anything, I will let you know. Can I get you to PM me with some contact info as chances are that I will not be able to get to a computer while I am out there?
I was over that way here a few days ago, in the margins of the Black Hills and didn't see anything despite keeping my eyes peeled (I did see some huge mule deer, a few pronghorns and one of the biggest turkeys I have ever seen, but no BF). Perhaps you are right, maybe there is a lack of a "Holy crap, what the h-ll is that?!" response in the Native American population. But then again, I don't think that the Black Hills have sufficient avenues for populations to travel through in order to enter and leave the area (just my humble opinion- I could be wrong). The reason I feel the Shoshone NF (where my field work is going to be at) is a plausible locale is that it is part of the Rocky Mntns, and that would provide a plausible route for unseen travel for a viable population of large bipedal animals. Once again, this is just my opinion....
I may head up to Spokane WA to see a friend of mine at Fairchild AFB after I get done near Cody. Just depends on whether my friend gets back with me about whether he's available and whether I find anything while I am out in the Shoshone. If I find something, someone will have to drag me kicking and screaming out of those mountains. LOL

I used to live in Lander and Thermopolis when I was a boy in the early 70's. I can't recall any news about a shooting back then. Not saying it didn't happen, just that I wish I'd heard about it then.
I used to run all over the outskirts of Thermopolis and never even think to look for anything unusual like a sasquatch. Now that I think back, the terrain in that area was ideal for such an animal.
Hindsight can be a real pain sometime.
By the way, my name is Jason and this is my first post.

I have always been surprised that more reports do not come from that area. I mean Wyoming, Montana and Idaho areas. I always figured that was prime area for a Bigfoot. They have Mountains, Rolling foot hills, Not a whole lot of people (Compared to most other states) They do have some but I would figure more from that are if I did not know any better.
It could be just the fact that the are is not as heavy populated as other areas. It could also be that the people in them areas are not online and all like bigger cities are also. The combination of the two could be the reason the areas do not get a lot more reports then they do.

Micahn, I agree. We used to live in Wyoming and spent much time out in the mountains, miles and miles of unbelievable "nothingness" other than the beauty. Never had an interest in the b/f subject back then, but yea, as Jason mentioned, the terrain seemed a suitable habitat. Oh, well. Lack of human population = lack of reported sightings.

Now now...let's not stereotype. You'd be amazed at how many ranchers and mine/oil patch workers are hooked into the web. Being far from "civilization" makes it even more useful to be internet-savy than would be the case for most folks in populated areas.
Besides, there's plenty of activity in Wyoming, it's just not reported very much. At least 2 shootings have been reported from the 1970s, and several "unsure" encounters have occurred in the Wind Rivers and Medicine Bow Mountains (two including people I know). The small number of people might be a factor, but
lots of folks hunt each year, so there's something else going on too.

Hey everyone, just wanted to drop a quick update to y'all and let you know that my tenure in Wyoming has been cut short (long story!) but I am heading back to Indiana today at 2:30 pm MST. I'll fill everyone in on the reasons for my return to the Hoosier State when I get home. Talk to you all later.
