Tiny Humans Are Weighed In - What Odds Yeti, Nessie, Aliens ?

AFTER THE' TINY HUMAN', WHAT ODDS NESSIE, YETI, ALIENS, BIG FOOT?
Following the discovery of a previously unknown species of Human Being, bookmakers William Hill have issued odds for the discovery of other unlikely creatures or beings.
'Mindful that at any given time proof of the existence of either the Loch Ness Monster or intelligent extra-terrestrial life could cost us over one million pounds, we have to be cautious' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe, 'Fortunately for us we have no record of any bets being taken for the discovery of a new species of human being confirmed.'
William Hill offer:
500/1 that conclusive proof of the current existence of the LOCH NESS MONSTER will be authenticated by the Natural History Museum on or before December 31, 2005.
1000/1 that incontrovertible proof of the existence of GHOSTS will be forthcoming by Dec 31, 2005.
250/1 that the UK Prime Minister will officially confirm the current existence of UFOs of extra-terrestrial origin on or before Dec 31, 2005.
250/1 that conclusive proof of the curent existence of the YETI will be authenticated by the Natural History Museum on or before Dec 31, 2005.
100/1 that the UK Prime Minister will confirm the current existence of intelligent ALIEN LIFE of extra-terrestrial origin on or before Dec 31, 2005.
'We have also taken bets on the existence of the TASMANIAN TIGER (50/1); the MOA (66/1);BIG FOOT (100/1) while a customer from Belfast has bet that a 90 ft long snake will be discovered. We are always happy to consider similar bets on currently unknown or unproven species' added Sharpe.

It's interesting that the odds are now 100/1 on Bigfoot. Two years ago, when I placed a bet with them, the odds were 500/1. Perhaps I (and other Americans) depressed the odds. Or maybe Bigfoot is beginning to seem more credible, following the conversion or semi-conversion of Goodall, Swindler, et al. EDIT: Also the concession by Australian authorities that they'd been hiding and denying the existence of alien big cats around Victoria for decades may have wobbled WH's faith in the Official Line on these matters. Ditto the increasing credibility and general acceptance over time of ABC reports in the UK.

It's interesting also that Nessie is five times unlikelier, at 500/1, that the Yeti is 250/1, and that the very likely Tasmanian Tiger is only twice as likely, at 50/1.

(Note: William Hill won't take bets on these topics directly from Americans--you'll have to use a friend in the UK as a go-between. (But try anyway--maybe they'll change their policies.))

PS: You can bet on the Presidential election here. (Or try to.) Bush is the underdog at 4/6, Kerry the favorite at 11/10.

If anyone wants me to place a bet for them, I'd be more than happy to.

Hey thanks, Paul, that's great. I may be in contact. And while you're at it you could take a cut on behalf of Bipto!

Meanwhile, thanks to a lead in Time (Nov. 1, p. 22) I've discovered Intrade, a Dublin-based futures market that matches bets by customers (Americans OK!) on a variety of political, financial, and legal topics. Its record in predicting elections surpasses the pollsters (saith Time), and it is favoring Bush today in the popular vote by 52.1/45.5. (The Democrat is favored in 2008 by 50/45.) There are dozens of ways of betting on the election. Payment is handled by credit card. And it has an affiliates program whereby web sites that provide referrals get a nice commission.

It doesn't (yet) take bets on cryptozoology, etc. but maybe they could be talked into it. (What's probably needed is some way of unambiguously determining when a creature has been discovered, using a prestigious neutral party to make the call, the way William Hill does.) It would be a great way to make those scoftics put up or shut up, as I wrote here a year ago.
