Its interesting to see once you "break the ice" with outdoorsmen how many "stories" pop up....

I wonder what the response would be from polling members of outdoor-activity sites with the question "BF Encounter? Y/N/Not Sure". The results would be taken from a controlled or semi-random sample (maybe slightly biased toward attention-seekers because the members aren't shy about speaking out (given an alias)), so they couldn't be dismissed as "anecdotal evidence." I.e., the percentage of witnesses vs. non-witnesses vs. Not Sure would be known.

I read the threads linked Stratman, and noticed soem of the members referenced grey fox calls as being possibly mistaken for sasquatch calls. I found here a link to some fox calls and howls, and there seems to be a resemblance:

Stratman,.......that second link you posted, about the N.J. fisherman hearing some
strange screams at night while fishing sounds similar to something that happened to me this summer.

My friend and myself have a sort of tradition of night fishing at a favorite spot in South Jersey when the weather gets hot. Top water action gets pretty fierce and exciting at mid summer.

We got to our spot a little bit after 10:00 p.m. (no boat, we were bank fishing) and started throwing poppers, with mixed results. After about 45 min. we heard a bit of loud rustling and comotion 40 yds or so to my left. (my fishing partner was to my right, 50-60 yds away). He shouted over to me "what the hell are you doing over there?" The comotion stopped just long enough for me to say in a scared but loud whisper "It's not me". Right after I spit that out, it started up again moving away from us, and then the screams started.......my nose crinkled up and tears started welling in my eyes. I was frozen for a couple of seconds until I heard my friend crashing through the brush saying to get to the truck. We both ran to the truck and promptly exited the scene....minus our rods, reels and tackle. We talked on the ride home about what could have made such a noise. He's an avid hunter also, and between us we didn't have any explination.

We did go back the next morning to collect our tackle (about $800 worth just in G-loomis rods, not to mention reels and lures). We had a look around, but only because he was armed and it was of course daylight now! As you might guess, we found nothing.

I did some searching on the internet after that, (which is how I found this site) and did in fact find out what caused us to almost give up night fishing for the rest of our lives. We can laugh about it now, but I assure you at the time it was the only thing that ever put a primal fear into me.....and my friend...........you're gonna love this one..........it was none other than two woodchucks, a.k.a. groundhogs, a.k.a. "whistlepigs", having a little fight over food or territory. Every heard 'em fighting???

Scroll down to the sounds of them fighting, and imagine yourself in the woods at night and you hear that. (#2 in particular) and it lasts much longer than a couple of seconds.

But now I'm an official BF info addict. I can't seem to get enough info or hear enough stories/encounters. popcorn2.gif

Stratman, what are those guys calling a grey fox? Is that a colour phase of the common red fox?

No doubt some "bigfoot" screams are foxes. Porcupines also make screaming type sounds at night, I think during the mating season. (I wonder why? happy.gif )
There are lots of things out there that can be explained before putting the bf label on it.

Good post! I did the same on a retreiver forum but didn't get any bites...

Hopefully we can get some good, unfetterered cop input.

Remind 'em to turn on their dashboard cameras if they have a sighting--it'll be worth money to 'em (or their department)!

And see if you can round up (via PM?) members who'd be willing to be part of a "Flatfoot / Bigfoot" TV show or video documentary.

The red fox Vulpes vulpes is larger than the gray fox Urocyon cinereoargenteus, with the gray fox being a much shyer animal. The red fox habitat and range are the woodlands, grasslands and surburban areas in Alaska, Canada and all of the United States except the Southwest, Great Plains and SE coastal plains.

The gray fox lives in the forests and thickets throughout the United States except in parts of the great plains and mountains of the Northwest.

One other note, the gray fox is 4-5 inches smaller in height than the red fox, and is a good climber and will take cover in the branches of trees.

Your fox lesson of the day! new_tonguesmiley.gif laugh.gif

Edit** I know that both these fox will make a scream type sound that will scare the bejeebies out of you. biggrin.gif

That is definitely pretty freaky sounding. I'll try to get some recordings of our wolves fighting. Even the 8 month old pups are absolutely fierce sounding when they get into a scrap. It's getting close to the breeding season so there's bound to be a breeding war by the males. I've heard them growl at each other at night under my bedroom window and it's absolutely terrifying if you didn't know it was them. icon_stressed.gif
