Don't flame the messenger.
Here' one post.
"because we have always been told not to mess with them...and not to shoot one. we always heard from the old timers that the hattacks almost always jacked up the person who shot at one. most of us are some percentage of indian blood and our grandparents even moreso in beliefs and they dont want them harmed.
i did talk to an old man one time who watched his father ace one off their porch back about 1915 or 1920. The father gave it both barrels of a 10ga loaded with buckshot from about 5 ft..and it fell off the porch and died..the guys dad hooked it up to a team of mules and dragged in a mile or so down the creek.
he stated that his mother went to live with his grandparent for over a year after that night and that the stench of the monkee lasted for weeks..on their porch.
they usually arent alone..but move around in groups of 2-3. they definately try to get your attention with 1 while the others move around..
the terrain is absolutely a deathtrap to climb out of to get off the mountain and you definately wouldnt want to tangle with a group of them in that matter. anyone who has hiked the kiamichi mountians can tell you they are harsh to navigate.
the other point is that we grow up seeing lots of critters that we dont shoot.
cougars, bears...badgers...wolves..
why would i kill something just to have killed it...knowing that i couldnt even get it off the mountain top.
actually many others have been killed...a good friend of mine and his brother made the news a few years ago..after his brother killed one with a SKS. yes the lowly...SKS..lots a blood...and hair..to back it up..
that one was a nuisance...and was getting to high and mighty around his family..trying to scare them out of the house they were living in..
the group of monkees was killing deer in their acreage around the house and they were pissed off at the family presence.
1 shot to the chest..1 to the head while it was thrashing around on the ground in his front yard.
most apes exhibit a trait of carrying off sick and dying apes of the group and 2 came out of the wood line and carried it off.
i know of 2 others that have been shot and carried off my other monkees in the troop.
if someone is serious about acing one..they better be prepared to stack up dead ones like cord wood."
