With no recordings of the sounds you heard, there's nothing anyone can intelligently say about them other than "Huh."

Posting the story could be of value to people who live in this area. I actually randomly checked bfro today and saw it already but it interests me b/c my grandparents own a cabin within the general vacinity, Near Pioneer off Highway 88 for those of you who know the area.
I'm going up there to witerize the deck and could use another hand, heck maybe I can recruit bf to help! (esp. if he has some good carpentry skills)

I read the report on BFRO and there may be something to this. The first thing I did was go to Web Site for this county in the state of California. The county provides pertinent information in refernce to fire districts and population density. I compared this information with that listed on the BFRO data site.
There have been a least eight documented Bigfoot encounters, ranging from sounds to visual sightings since the 1990s. If this individual pursues a follow-up investigation I'm sure he will garner further evidence to support his claim.
If I had the funds and time I would be heading to Northern California to pursue these creatures. Time is vital when in pursuit of the creature, only two days have transpired and I bet the creatures are still in the same area.

yeah, and a close up full color video would be great, along with an interview of the alleged bigfoot! but hey, take what you can get.
I've heard rumors about a long history of activity in the West Point area, including a sighting by a husband and wife friend of ours and lots of class B stuff from my family, but I'm hoping my post will encourage others to post any info from this area.

Didn't mean to seem terse before. I just wanted to point out that ANYONE can claim ANYTHING they want, but without any sort of evidence...well...there's nothing anyone can really say about its veracity. I'm NOT saying Hitechhunter didn't hear something. I'm SURE he did. But without a recording of it, no one will ever know if it was a coyote, hippies, Sasquatch, or cougers. That's all.

True. Scientifically, a sample of one means nothing, but a large number of reports (sample data) represents a body of evidence that can be statistically analyzed, so there is value to a report even if there is no "proof". Especially since one report often triggers additional reports, increasing the statistical sample level.
Scientists trying to prove or disprove a theory never have "proof" dropped on their laps. Rather, they sort through the samples (data), identify trends, conduct experiments, and lead to a hypothesis following the scientific method.

I agree nearly 100% with what you just said Hitechhunter!

That's why i used the word "evidence" instead of "proof."
By the way, the hypothesis is the FIRST thing to be stated, it's the THEORY that comes after all the data collection and analysis.

And scientists NEVER try to prove a hypotheis. We try to DISprove it, since by definition, a hypothesis (or resulting theory) can NEVER be proved, just strongly supported. Just keepin' it real, yo.

Correct DesertYeti!
The most important thing is being out in the field and trying to gather as much data as possible. If Hitechhiker obtains a recording, we will be able to send it to an expert to have it identified. If it is a common species, we'll know...if its something else, then yeah!

Hippies? What do they sound like?
In the 60's they made vocalizations like, "Peace", "Free Love", "Far Out", and "I'm stoned booger".
In the 21rst Century, about the only sound they make is "glug glug gurgle gurgle", as they draw their stash through GERITOL filled antique hookahs!

Hitechhunter-
Very interesting encounter! I know the area you speak of. I pan for gold in Calaveras County quite often, and on my last outing, I noticed a small "branch teepee" just off one of the old mine roads. At the time, I didn't think much of it, and I didn't take any photos, which was really dumb on my part.
I'm very interested in your pursuit of these sounds! Good luck!

What part of the county was the tree structure? (I dredge for gold on the Mokelumne and on Sutter Creek.) "Hairy Man" (the woman) has investigated a tree "nest" in neighboring Tuolumne County...report on BFRO. She may be interested in seeing what you've found.
I couldn't make it out last weekend and am shooting for next.

Thanks For posting the story HTH....
I always liked California....I guess its because when I was a kid...I would see
a golden sunset...here in MI. ...and imagined California as a golden land of enchantment...like the fabled El'Dorado...

FYI, now this is pure speculation. Tom Brown Jr. teaches outdoor survival classes in California. Maybe one of his students built it. Did it look anything like one of the
suspected BF structures on the BFRO website?

Hello Hitechhunter,
I know this is an old report but I am way behind on the forums and I am still catching up.
A couple questions for you:
The cows were moving away from the howl below. Do you think it was possible that the BFs (if that is what they indeed were) were trying some hunting tactics to catch a cow?
Also have you been back since then and if so have you noticed anything to update?
Cheers,
jamin

I live near this area, a bit North of West Pt, 3 miles East of Fiddletown in Amador County. On August 1st 2007 my 24 year old nephew saw what he swears was either a 7+ foot tall bigfoot or someone in a very tall costume pulling a hoax. It was about 11:30 at night on Fiddletown road where Hale Road intersects. As he came around a corner he clearly saw this thing crossing the road from right to left and dissapear down a dry creekbed and into the underbrush. There is a road sign there and he said the top of it's head was as tall as the middle of the sign. I measured that the following morning, it came out to be 7 and a half feet.
After that, we started looking up info on bigfoot and came across the Sierra Sounds recordings. When we heard the "Whoops and Knocks" clip my wife and I just looked at each other in amazement. We've heard those exact sounds, just the "whoops" not the knocks, off and on from when we first moved here in 2001 until about 2 years ago. Always at night, and from the direction of a ridge to the west and north of us. We had decided at the time that it must be some kind of bird/crane so after a while we didn't pay much attention to it anymore. Now that I'm ready to record it, we haven't heard it, that figures!

Looks like we have some recent activity as shown in the report below.
http://www.bigfootforums.com/index.php?showtopic=23527Yea Norm isn't that mostly the case, just when your ready to record or film, BF wont show himself.
Keep trying though it sounds like maybe things are heating up over there.
Cheers
