Hi,
I happened to be looking at the August 2004 issue of Reader's Digest and saw a few lines talking about how in Florida, a lawmaker was trying to pass a law protecting the Skunkape. All this was after a resident claimed to have hit one with his car. Anyone else have information on this?
God bless,
Nightwalker

Like that would protect them from getting hit by a car! Wonder what would of happen if the Law was already on the books with that driver? blink.gif

Hey Nightwalker, did the article give a date when the supposed near road kill happened? The only b/f vs vehicle encounters I have been able to find in Florida were back in the 70's. Did it mention the county?

The few lines were in a bit about how weird Florida is. It said that the Skunk Ape had been seen around Bardin, and even though I live in Florida I have no idea where that is located. My husband works across from the Capital in Tallahassee, I'm going to try to make him go see if there is actually a law against harassing a Skunk Ape. huh.gif

Hello Painthorse,

The account I think your referring about was in 1974 in Dade County, the individuals name was Richard Lee Smith. Took a quick peek at the Book: Bigfoot On The East Coast by Rick Berry for the info.

Also near Miami in 1975, there was one on the Turnpike close to Miami by a lady driver (no name given) who swerved to miss one. Hope this helps! smile.gif

If I'm not mistaken, Bardin is just south of the Okeefenokee Swamp.

And there is no law on the books in Florida concerning skunk apes. I looked into this a while ago and found some info on it. I'll see if I can dig it back up. From what I recall, the motion died on the floor.

Fishbone, thanks for the info. My spoilsport of a husband wouldn't go ask if there were any laws concerning the Skunk Ape. wink.gif

Aw, what's the matter? He wasn't afraid somebody was going to snicker at him, was he? icon_razz.gif

Well, I hunted around and finally found this from Bobbie Short's site:

Does the creature exist? The law apparently thinks it does. This is from Associated Press, October 1977:

"TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) A bill making it illegal to molest a Skunk Ape has been passed by a legislative committee as a lawmaker renews his effort to protect the legendary anthropoid. The Criminal Justice Committee passed the bill (HB58) by Rep. Paul Nuckolls, R-Fort Myers, Tuesday after Nuckolls unveiled it for the second year in a row. Last session, the bill passed committee but never reached the floor."

The thing is, this makes it sound like there is a law on the books but as much as I've searched I've never seen anything about it in the statutes. huh.gif

[edit] All I can figure is that the bill passed the house, but not the senate.

That 's it.

He wouldn't go ask a question about Bigfoot because he said he would be laughed at, but he doesn't mind dancing in the middle of a store if he hears a song he likes :dancedude: and embarrasing the heck out of me. wacko.gif
