By Gerry D. Coleman;
The most often asked questions I receive about becoming a Cryptozoologist are:
1. How do I become a Cryptozoologist?
At this time there are no academic programs for, and no academic departments in Cryptozoology at any credited university or college in existence, anywhere. The first method to obtain the self proclaimed status of a Cryptozoologist is to become actively devoted to Cryptozoology and have a complete understanding of the field.
To be taken seriously one must decide where their interests will be displayed and grow. Studying related course’s such as Zoology and Anthropology are a must.
Continuing education through different avenues such as related seminars or courses: i.e. witness testimony, interviewing techniques, evidence gathering techniques, photographing and writing techniques are a plus. To further round out your abilities and to get the needed hands on experience, become a zoo, veterinary or animal shelter volunteer and learn live trapping procedures, tracking, animal identification and camping survival techniques, this field knowledge alone will give you a leg-up and needed creditability.
2. What exactly does a Cryptozoologist do?
Most Cryptozoologist write books and articles about the topic, make radio and television guest appearances on the subject and at times even produce they own documentaries on cryptids.
Other Cryptozoologist’s maintain a behind-the-scenes mode; investigating and researching independently for years, gathering Cryptozoological material and evidence, not only in the field but libraries and newspaper archives. They may also frequent conferences and join or create Cryptozoology interest groups on the web or within their community.
But the bottom line to a Cryptozoologist’s activity is to stay focused, unbiased and personally seek out the truth. A Cryptozoologist is never a follower, he or she is a team player or independent investigator, disciplining ones self to allow the facts of a case to speak, then if desired, presenting a theory in a clear and concise method.
3. Can I earn a living as a Cryptozoologist?
This is an individual personal question only you can answer. If you are wondering if there’s an application somewhere to fill out and send off the answer at this time is no, although you may wish to pursue a career as an investigative reporter for Cryptozoological/Paranormal type magazines such as Fate or Fortean Times, but most Cryptozoologist become self proprietors, creating a small business-like operation through book sales, guest appearances and becoming production advisors.
The hard truth to the fact is you will in all reality need a full time occupation to not only earn a living but subsidize your Cryptozoology quest . Try your best to make that needed job as complimentary to your interest in Cryptozoology as is possible, this may be as simple as acquiring employment that requires/allows travel. Other jobs that entail interaction with the public, computers or allows you plenty of time off can all be a plus.
Here are some of the jobs I have had and the reasons why, which I feel not only allowed my Cryptozoology interests to stay intact but contributed to my Cryptozoology growth; becoming a paramedic, this not only granted me ample time off but put me in direct contact with ‘excited’ eyewitnesses that I could study and interview. Next I took a job as a production manager for a printing press, here I was able to learn the behind the scenes methods of publications. Another career choice I made with Cryptozoology in mind was to become an over-the-road owner-operator of a semi-truck, thus giving me the freedom to traveled where and when I wanted; going to the latest cryptid sighting, investigating, interviewing and documenting cases in person. Then, again with Cryptozoology in mind, I went after and acquired employment as a counselor for troubled teenagers, this gave me further experience into witness testimony, granted me added experience on camping excursions, wildlife outings and needed time off to devote to Cryptozoology.
My latest addition to the resume’ was as a private investigator for a law film. This career choice was solely based on my interest in Cryptozoology; constructively intermixing, searching, interviewing, data collection and documentation as well as the freedom to travel between cases or even at times because of cases. You will find your own path to take that best suits your personal situation.

I did not mean that you did not believe it GrandCherokee. But what you posted it started right off saying "At this time there are no academic programs for, and no academic departments in Cryptozoology at any credited university or college in existence, anywhere." So I was just going to show how that is starting to change a little (Very slowly) And that some real collages and universities are starting to have some classes on the subject.
And speaking of witch here is another one. It is for kids during the summer but it is help as a university.
