I am trying to find work in the Pacific Northwest so that I can become more involved in the sasquatch research. I have been trying to find work in the outdoors (forestry, fishing, guide operations, etc) and had no luck finding where jobs are posted. Does anyone have any suggestions where I should look? Does anyone know of any companies who are looking for new employees?
This probably is not the most on topic thing for this board, but I'm getting desperate. If anyone can be of assistance it would be appreciated. Thank you

Well, speaking for my own experiences here in WA, I think you may be in for a heck of a long haul.
The commercial fishing fleet here has been pretty much kaput for 20+ years. There are still a number of boats that make the run North for the Alaskan openers, but they seem to be getting smaller and smaller each season. Myself and and a friend ran a charter business back in the early-mid 90's and came out of it pretty good, but wouldn't even dream of trying to run that kind of show now....you'd lose your shirt.
Hunting guide market here is a dearth as well, compared to some of the neighboring states. Haven't worked that market since they passed all the no-bait, no-dog laws for bear and cats. Actually, for my .02 cents WA has one of the most %@@#$# up management systems compared to a number of states with similar possibilities. A LOT of people have quit hunting in-state anymore and head to where the grass is greener.
If it were me, with a chance of getting points on a testing still, I'd look at USFS, BLM, or BPA.... get some credit for that service time. If you want to stay in the non-government sector, I'd look at Land Surveying...worked in that field for a number of years and ALWAYS had more work than we could get to.
Well, hope that helps a little, I know its not all that promising sounding, but the market up here has really changed a lot over the last few years....feel free to contact me and ask any questions you may have.
Good Luck!!

For some reason, I am not allowed to contact you directly through here...I'd like to talk with you some more. Is there anyway you could send me a message with your contact info in it?

Steve,
The reason you can't PM is because you're still in the "new members" category. I've sent Bipto and Paul a PM to move you over into "members". Sorry for the inconvenience, but it was a necessary evil. Hang tight.

hehehe...believe me, it took alot of feather ruffling to make Bipto put that into effect. Like I said, "necessary evil". We don't say his name, but some refer to him as Voldamorte.

Sorry about the PM mess up, guess I should look a little closer....story of my life...sigh
On a more positive note, depending on your quals medic-wise and service history, you might look at contacting DOE in reference to Hanford Patrol...its a security element on the Hanford Reservation.....to be honest, boring as hell, but pays good and its a start.
Hopefully the honchos get you set up for PM quick, and I'll be happy to do what I can to provide whatever info I can
And thanks fish, for catching my goof and working so quick at getting it set up so we can B.S.....BFF mods save the day again!!

I don't even really have to be doing anything directly wilderness related.....I'm pretty open, but just want to get out of working inside hospitals. It's depressing....
I'm an intermediate EMT/firefighter and respiratory therapist by avocation and profession respectively (just in case anyone was wondering).

There ya go... now get out there and learn how to jump out of airplanes and you're pretty much a shoe in. They're always looking for smoke-jumpers and firefighters to fight the forest fires out here.
Click Here <--- To see a web site that lists many Wildland Firefighter links. Some of these pages, such as the USDA Forest Service have links to their employment department.
Click Here <--- To see a web site that lists Oregon Hospitals and their web pages with available job openings. Openings for Respiration Therapists.
Click Here <--- For the web site of a major Air and Ground Ambulance Company in the Southern Oregon/Northern California area.
Well there's a few starting points for ya, will keep eyes and ears open for more.

An idea a friend and i are mulling over for this area, may fly out your way too.
Green Tours, Eco tours, either day outings or weekend or multi-day outings. Take people out to the wilderness and "guide" them, introduce them to the local flora and fauna, tell them some local native legends, tell them some geological sh*t, about how the waterfall was formed and how that outcropping was made, let them oogle trees and squirrels, and PAY you for this service

May start as a part time thing, but hey, youd be self employed, and with your background, you can handle anything that crops up.

Hmmmm....not a bad idea. But there is a lot of legal and insurance bullsh-t that would go along with something like that I would imagine. Does anybody know of any hunting, fishing, or wilderness tour companies in the Pac. NW?

Here's the website for the state of Washington. It has listings of both state jobs and private organizations:
http://www.access.wa.govFor the state jobs, apply both at the general state job listings site AND specific agencies. Send a faxed resume if possible, or at least mail one to the agency itself.
I'm not sure of your experience/education, but here's some of these agencies you could possibly find outdoor work with:

Start a tour company doing guided bigfoot encounters. Why not ?
Of course, you couldn't guarantee anything, but you could guide people to locations where sightings have occurred, and talk through then, ghost-story style.

You might also check out the local colleges such as Penninsula Community College in Port Angeles on the Olympic Pennisula. It is located minutes from the Olympic National Park. The college is known for its fisheries department. There may be some information to be found through either that or the Parks Services. Actually, the tour guide thing might be a really great idea. I understand that the conservationists are making it difficult for people to just go and camp and hike anywhere they like nowadays. Trying to keep things "natural". Lots of people love to explore the mountains and parks and don't even know where to begin or what they are looking at. The parks service would get you deeper into the woods. But the fisheries might also get you "up the creek" a ways! Good luck in your endeavors!

if i am not mistaken and i may as i screw up my fair share but there r a few ranches that do blacktail deer hunts in the pac north west. this is a deer that is only in this area. rather small compaired to the local prevelent mule deer or even to white tail but this is a growing desire for the professional or serious hunters as this is a species that most dont get to harvest

The Fisheries department is probably out, someone literally has to die before there is an opening and there is a big waiting list. Not much logging going on, but maybe some cedar salvage, precommerical thinning or tree planting. Park service openings are usually in the rural areas. If you have law enforcement background you might try the border patrol. If you can drive commercially, there is a new gravel pit that will be opening, removing gravel from deep within a good habitat area. Then there is forest fire fighters. Stream reconstruction hired by logging companies to complete contracts.
The best bet is to work in a place that is close to your home that is in the woods. This would open up a lot more job opportunities, such as Boeing, Microsoft, auto dealerships, dock yards, just about anything. Newspapers here are predicting a turn around very soon what with all the plane orders coming in. This has a trickle down affect over time.
You need to come here and go around to apply. After you get a job and move, I think you can use it as a tax deduction, but I am not sure on that one.
Depending on your talents and qualifications you should be able to find a job... welding, construction, gardening, driving, timber, mechanical, administration, management, ranch hand, etc.
... that is if you like the weather.

Most of the traditional outdoors jobs are gone.
The environmental industry has pretty much killed commercial logging and mining in the west.
Commercial finfish fishing in Alaska is dying due to economic pressures from the new and growing worldwide fish farming industry. There is opportunity in shellfish farming up here, but it requires quite an investment, navigation through incredible government permitting, and a fickle market (not to mention dealing with sea lions, sea otters, and orcas raiding your pots, in addition to the regular storms that come through ruining your whole farm). Farming is a risky business, whether it's wheat on the plains or oysters in the sea.
As a former heavy equipment operator, I can attest that most outdoor construction is gone; you don't need to build logging roads if you can't log.
Eco-tours are growing, but (at least in Alaska) they are pretty much Disney-type float rides offered near the entrances to National Parks, or require huge investments (lodges, aircraft, etc.).
Park rangers up here are pretty much seasonal college ranger-wannabes, and all they really do is narrate a prepared script to AARP bus and train riding lookyloos, and answer a few silly questions.
Native Corporations up here have some opportunities in logging and mining, but if you're not Native yourself, you can pretty much forget employment with them. Contractors and sub-contractors have some opportunity with them.

...snort...Boeing as a viable employer?! Sorry, but they're going international with their operations to cut costs, and IMHO are going to fade away from the Washington State scene over the next few years.
