After reading Califb's 1873 OK post, I searched the newspaper archive but did not find that story.

Here are a couple of other OK stories I had not posted yet.

Some more articles from the past; these are from the New York Times.

The links are to the "free preview" portion of each article; you are supposed to pay for the article itself.

(The articles are pdf files ranging from 424 KB to 608 KB in size. I'm willing to forward copies of these files to someone who would be willing to upload them (if that's possible).)

1973 article:

Interesting reading! Thanks Tirademan for posting them. Seems Mississippi has had these creatures for a few years now too.

Them southern boys always have been a little wild..LOL

I wonder how this place got named?
Bigfoot Trail

This even sounds like the kind of place you might find them.

Yeah, Mike, I'd say they've been around there for a while! The question, "where do you think sasquatch are?" I like to answer with "where did humans make it on their two feet?"

Oak, did you say you have those PDF files? If so, could you send them to me? Thanks.

Here are some more international stories I found...including an interesting account of a woman being abducted by a gorilla...

Has anyone ever had any success in researching any further info or follow up stories reported about these extraordinary events? Perhaps the archives of local libraries, historical societies or courthouse records located nearby could shed some light on these claims and what possibly happened to these creatures. If anyone lives within the areas of these articles it maybe worth a shot?
Tirademan
Thanks Mike and Titus...sorry about the lack of activity of late, but I've been working too much on a freelance project that is now ending.

Olcowman, I agree. I would argue that everybody's public library has old local newspapers that most likely have old stories in them, not to mention court houses etc as you stated. Newspaperarchive.com where I've found most of these only has so many papers in their collection. Thousands of other accounts probably exist out there.

I find more every time I search their (constantly updated) website. Here are few more odds and ends I found.

hats off to you, great job. I just scrolled through every page of this thread, great stuff! I plan to get you cd from your site.
Can I ask how many NJ related articles you have? I saw a few in this thread, but not the ones I was hoping for!
I was looking for articles from 1976, 3 reported sigtings in the white meadow lake area. May be reported as rockaway, white meadow lake.
I saw one from mount hope, which is right near rockaway that was great, and the one from dover.
thanks in advance

Thanks J...I have posted 15 stories from New Jersey in this thread, but none from the 70's. All of them are pre-1927 except for one from 1987 about a mysterious night roar in Woodbury. All of them are on the CD-R as well.

I didn't find anything that matches the 1976 story you mentioned above...sorry!

I did find some other interesting stuff though from that era in my searches.

I talked to one of the original investigators of the incident and found out some information that never made the newspapers.

The boy inflicted the scratches upon himself and the hair was from a donkey. But the interesting thing about it was that the family down the road from this kid, was having problems with some bigfoot coming up to the house and barn. The boy on the hoax was friends with that family's kids and decided to make up the story.

So in essence, the hoax was based on real events, except it occurred down the road to another family. (they didn't get attacked, just had nuisance bigfoot)

Tirademan, thanks so much for the posts of the articles, it gives me more to add to my file on it.

gfanikf, I have posted 30 stories from PA in this thread. I'm not sure exactly what counties they are from. Have you read through them? I realize they are not grouped together...sorry.

Let me know if you know an exact date or year as that helps.

I have found 6 more that I have not yet had a chance to "Photoshop" and post yet. I'll try to get to those but as I look at them, here you go...strange animal outside of Philly in West Newton...1895

The following curious tale, evidently designed to tickle the ears of the marvellous, is copied from the Monterey Senator
"The Whistling Wild Boy of the Woods" Something like a year ago there was considerable talk about a strange animal, said to have been seen in the south-western part of Bridgewater. Although the individual who described the animal persisted in declaring that he had seen it, and was at first considerably frightened of it, the story was heard and looked upon more as food for the marvellous, then as having any foundation in fact. He represented the animal, as we have it through a third person, as having the appearance of a child seven of eight years old, though somewhat slimmer, and covered entirely with hair. He saw it, while picking berries, walking toward him erect, and whistling like a person. After recovering from the fright, he is said to have pursued it, but it ran off with such speed, whistling as it went, that he could not catch it.
The same or a similar looking animal was seen in Silver Lake Township, about two weeks since, by a boy some sixteen years old. We had the story from the father of the boy in his absence, and afterward from the boy himself. The boy was sent to work in the back woods near the New York State line. He took with him a gun and was told by his father to shoot anything he might see except persons or cattle. After working a while, he heard some person, a little brother as he supposed, coming towards him, whistling quite merrily. It came within a few rods of him, and stopped. He said it looked like a human being, covered with black hair, about the size of his brother, who was six or seven years old. This gun was some little distance off and he was very much frightened. He, however, got his gun, and shot at the animal, but trembled so that he could not hold it still. The strange animal, just as his gun went off, stepped behind a tree, and then ran off, whistling as before. The father said the boy came home very much frightened, and that a number of times during the afternoon, when thinking about the animal he had seen he would, to use his own words, 'burst out a crying'
Making due allowance for frights and consequent exaggeration, an animal of singular appearance has doubtless been seen. What it is, or whence it came, is of course yet a mystery. From the description, if an ourang outang were known to be in the country, we might think this to be it. As no such animal is known (without vouching for the correctness of the story,) we shall leave the reader in conjecture, or guess for himself, what it is. For the sake of a name, however, we will call the strange animal, The Whistling Wild Boy of the Woods.

Wow. Fascinating, the number of stories and the ages of them.
otho
Those "wild man" encounters from the late 19th century are interesting. Has there been any research done into a connection with the 1861-1865 war? Medical treatment and knowledge was poor, with the effects of modern warfare, at the time, on soldiers who were not getting adequate treatment, it would not be altogether surprising if soldiers went "feral" after the war. Especially considering the dire conditions of the occupied confederacy, in particular. These (possible) examples may have turned into the rationale, long after their life expectancy in the wild, continuing the "human wild man" explanations. The descriptions of the clothes between 1865 and the early 20th century indicate possible CSA depot, or even Federal issue uniform items. With regards the account/s of "wild man" sightings, by women, during that time, is it possible that the descriptions of "trousers", was actually added to avoid elaborate details?
Tirademan
OK, I promise I will try not to let this thread dry up like I have over the last 10 months! With that, here are a couple of CA stories I "Photochopped" up today.

Some of these are continued stories to those I'd found in the past.

As to "feral" humans, I remain unconvinced. I would argue that to be a transient in the 1800's would be very difficult. I feel that most of the "solo mountain men" of the day, while looking grungy, would be able to fend for themselves in the wilderness. How long could you survive if you couldn't?

As always, the easiest answer is that Squatch is out there...it solves ALL the riddles. I would argue that people who actually saw "wild men of the woods" described them just as Bigfoot eyewitnesses today, as best they could. The people they told their story to were also probably much like today...skepticism searches for a "reasonable" answer. A large, hairy North American ape is not a reasonable answer to most people, hence the stretch for answers. The "civil war soldier gone crazy" I've found at least 4 different times...also found one where a man who was thought to have survived the Great Hinckley fire of 1894 in Minnesota was the culprit. I've also found the "nudist" answer a couple of times.

That is not to say that this "woman slain story" couldn't have been caused by a human stalker. I just thought the "wild man" title, terrorizing women and children for weeks, mussel digging and two knife wounds were interesting.

Mkianni, if you check post 622, you'll see I've got them available at my website. I only have CD-R's available now, as I've sold out of the hard copies. The CD-R though, has all the new stories I've found, as well as some other stuff. You can find it here:

Here's a couple more stories...the one from 1759 mentions Islands around Australia and tales of a middle species between monkey and man in the last paragraph, albeit with a tail!

OK, one Califb sent to me from the 1800's...not much mystery as to what they saw...except for skeptics who place no faith in eyewitness statements.
