Thanks for the thanks...I get a kick out of finding them too!

It might be interesting to note that I've been studying where they claim they captured the 8' 3" wildman in the very first post. It seems it was captured near St. Anthony (which is in the middle of Minneapolis!) or near the headwaters of the Mississippi? Anyone with a good understanding of the cliffs and caves in that area want to help? That damn left column being cut off doesn't help! But I thought it might be important to figure it out. Now, what happened to the damn thing(s) is what I want to know!

Here's a thread I started about some teens who died in caves in that area. Think these might be the same ones? The caves that is.... biggrin.gif

Huntster
TiradeMan, excellent work! How did you find those gems?
Blackdog
Wow, I missed that article... Very cool!
It was kind of difficult to interpret the first column but it appears to reference the Falls of St. Anthony which is now is in downtown Minneapolis. It also seems that they talk of the St. Peters River, which is the old name for the Minnesota River. The Minnesota River confluences the Mississippi River at the border of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Fort Snelling is located there and was the gateway to the western frontier in that area of the country. It was a very rugged and wild area at the time of the story.
The caves that Jaylee is talking about are in this area, and although most of the existing caves are manmade it’s more than possible that this was the area that the author wrote about. The are many bluffs and hills in this area and it sure meets the description.

Huntster, I came across this website:

http://www.newspaperarchive.com

...and subscribed after my "free search" turned up a bunch of matches for "wild man of the woods"

After that, it was just searching on any terms I thought they may have used in the past. Mystery animal, mountain devil, bigfoot, sasquatch, hairy giant, ape man, ape boy, monster, giant, all that stuff...anyone got any more ideas?

Just think of all the newspaper microfiche that Libraries have buried away!

Interestingly, I've come across many, many panther/cat sighting stories that always end up with "well, they were probably mistaken, there hasn't been any large cats around here for blah, blah blah!" Seems many animals decide to fool humans.

I've also run across a few of sea serpent/lake creature stories.

I'll keep posting them as I go through what I've found. I may try to compile them all into a downloadable PDF like I did the Library of Congress "Strange Howls" stories I found:

Thanks JayleeD and Blackdog. That St. Peters thing was messing with me. Sounds like you nailed it. It is quite an interesting account for sure.

I'm in Eau Claire, WI right now visiting my folks, so I've had the maps out wondering! Have also been looking at a few places in the Blue Hills of WI that may be worth checking out. They'd found some footprints there a few years ago. There's a Devil's creek in that area, and a ski hill...not quite mountains, but for Wisconsin it may be the right kind of place. Also, soooo many swamps.

Anyway, I'll keep posting what I find...I've got to get my $80 worth! biggrin.gif

Right on, Tirademan!!

I love these...especially the way they used the language back in the late 1800s....some classic lines in these....the one where the boys saw it but haven't returned to the hill....the policemen "repaired" to the location, etc....
excellent....
too bad that one had a knife, some clothes and a fire....probably was an escaped lunatic...you think? or they got the descriptions wrong...because he sure vocalized a family out of their home!! laugh.gif

BFDad, yeah, I wonder about some of these descriptions as well. IMHO, they get it right about as much as modern observers do, meaning that much variation is to be expected. The old adage, if 2 people view the same thing...? Was it a knife, or a stick? Interesting that there are several accounts where they are seen carrying clubs!

I take all these with a grain of salt, especially the more "literary" accounts. But, what I find the most intriguiging is the OVERALL nature of these stories.

It seems that in many, many places, over many years, people have been confronting (and been confronted by!) "mystery animals." Now, some of these may have "usual" explanations, but many delve into that "panther, catamount, giant dog" rationalization that, to me, is just convieniant opinion. They want an understandable explaination like most humans do when encountering the strange. Not to mention cops keeping posse's at bay!

I think the descriptions of the sounds are most interesting. As for the clothes, could they mistake fur for clothes? Remember, they usually explain that these are "men gone wild" so I can see them making that leap. Many accounts of today include the first reaction "why is that hunter wearing a snowmobile suit?" kind of thang.

The old accounts try to explain these sightings away. This, I believe, may cause the actual accounts to seem less credible.

Anyway, on to posting more!

tirademan
Tirademan
OK, starting with a bunch of "mystery animals"

tirademan

ps-what the hell is "intriguiging?"...whoops!
Tirademan
1955 OH Mystery black animal...

tirademan
Tirademan
1959 another OH mystery animal...

tirademan
Tirademan
OK, a 1961 WI search for "it." Then a follow-up declaring "wolverine!"

tirademan
Tirademan
OK, now this one may very well be the wolverine that they describe. I just think it would be an interesting film to view!

They did say 100 yards away and fuzzy character. The guy talks about how "very strong and exceptionally fast" the animal was and they first thought it a bear. Now the tail is a problem, but again, was it a tail?

Also note how they say wolverines haven't been in Wisconsin since 1870...not one, really? hmmm...sound like humans know everything about nature.

1973 Bigfoot could be real...REALLY? laugh.gif

tirademan
Tirademan
OK, the next 3 are accounts I found while searching on the word "Bigfoot." These are some of the earliest mentions of "bigfoot" I found, with the exception of "Bigfoot Wallace." What I find fascinating is the fact that people were finding "bigfoot" tracks and then explaining what made them. Obviously, they killed some big bears. But these "posse with reward searches" for bears that have killed 1,000 head seem a little odd to me. I'm no bear expert, but I wonder if all those "bigfoot" tracks were, indeed, bear tracks? Just my 2¢

1903 Bigfoot bear killed.

tirademan
Tirademan
A tale of "bigfoot" the wolf killed. Seems that 'Ol Bigfoot is the smartest wolf, bear, etc...

tirademan

(ps-who said an Indian made those "Bigfoot Wallace" tracks anyhow?) happy.gif
Tirademan
Now this one, I realize, could be just what it purports. But what I find interesting again is that they found "unusually large footprints" at one location. There could have been a bare-footed bigfoot burgler...I guess.
