Full Version: Let There be Cameras!

I hope this post makes sense, I have a lot of caffeine running through my system right now...

I think it would be pretty cool if somehow we could launch a nationwide campaign to put disposable cameras in the hands of every camper, hunter, fisher, hiker etc, so they would have access to it every waking moment of their trip smile.gif Or at the very least promote the idea enough to get them to do it themselves.

My reasoning is fairly simple, the more people out there with cameras hanging around their necks or at easy reach, the better chance to get a photograph of BF. I'm sure there a lot's of people who do carry cameras, but it seems to me that they are mainly limited to those who don't venture out into the wilderness very often, or those that aren't really used to the outdoors. But I could be wrong.

Now granted I can imagine the exponential increase of blobsquatches and hoaxes, but I just have to assume that within the mass flood of useless and dissapointing photos there will be some ground-breaking gems! And wouldn't it be fun and exciting anyways to go through all of them and make various comments and opinions. Heck, you could have a site dedicated to filtering out the photos, including a discussion forum wink.gif

And besides those specifically out doing field research and/or expeditions, just think of all those potential photographers who don't really believe, have a specific interest in the subject, or just don't care either way. They far out number the enthusiasts yet still venture out into the bush for their own individual reasons. I don't think it would be any added pain in the rear for them to carry a small camera around. And c'mon, who are the ones who usually have the encounters anyways? wink.gif

I think they would go along with it, but who knows... what do you think? Have any better ideas or something to add?

Okay, enough babbling for now smile.gif

That's an intriguing idea.

I will add it to my list of things I will do after I win the lottery.
(If that sounded like a smart-ass comeback... well, it wasn't.)

Really good idea if we can find the money.
Varg
No it didn't, I actually have the same kind of list smile.gif I like the idea of having a ton of money to throw at a maintstream media campaign informing people about the subject, or just hyping the crud out of it to get the average Joe interested smile.gif

Neat idea, but I have to believe the hoax problems would be kind of difficult.
Think of the incredible amount of stuff that would come in: bears, blobs, deliberately altered pictures, genuine ones (overlooked, or indistinct), etc.
I think this could invite problems, even though the intention is good enough. Possibly worse, would be the contests over hoax vs. real, like we have now with the P/G film.
Hopefully, images will still come along, I just think that asking folks to look for these en masse would keep the late night comics busy for weeks, especially when pictures did start arriving. But, JMO biggrin.gif

Incidentally, I was recently reading an advice column for car-owners on what emergency gear one should have in one's truck, and among the dozen or so items they listed was "a cheap camera," for taking pix of any accident scene one is involved in, saying it could be helpful in court or with an insurance company.

I've just discovered that the Rite-Aid drugstore chain is having a 2-for-1 sale on its already cheap store-brand of disposable cameras, bringing the price per camera, after tax, down to $4.25. I went and bought eight, to give away to people I know. I hope this is a chain-wide sale. Members should take advantage of it to buy several. Investigators might buy a dozen, to have some available to hand out to witnesses who have been having repeated sightings on their property or on a road they drive down.

EDIT: The camera comes loaded with 27 shots of 35 mm color film & a built-in flash.

EDIT: Eventually there'd be a good photo (clear, proper IM index, etc.) taken by a person in a high-cred job (ranger, cop, minister, psychologist, etc.) and that would really "move the bead." The borderline photos could be put in the grey basket. There should be public service announcements urging people to buy these--maybe even to get pictures of possible terrorists doing suspicious things. (On Coast-to-Coast the other night a caller reported seeing someone skulking around a nuclear plant making a sketch of it--but she didn't have a camera to get a picture of him.)

THIS is the photo-effort that should be encouraged, not the "second Patterson expedition" urged by Avindair. That was what a lot of money was spent on during the Byrne projects, to no avail. As Dahinden said (Long, p. 193), "Anyone who goes looking for Sasquatch is stupid because the chances of finding something are so remote." Also, in a post I made on Jan. 24, I wrote: "Sasquatch 2001 author Don Monroe estimates (pp. 187-88) that he has spent 15 years worth of time camped out in Bigfoot hotspots, and has one 2-second, long-distance sighting to show for it."

If BF is caught on tape or film, it'll be by accident, by an amateur--probably using a disposable camera. EDIT: Or by a cop, using a dash-mounted cop-cam. (Cops should be urged by their bosses to turn the damn thing on if they have a sighting.)

EDIT: Regarding the cost, objected to below: The cost would be minimal for each individual, and would be justified as "insurance" for mundane events like traffic accidents. If the government were to encourage the ownership of disposables by subsidizing purchases, "millions of dollars" wouldn't even be noticed in a trillion-dollar budget.
HidingNtheWoods
That would be cool, but yeah um three words millions of dollars, sorry buddy.

As soon as I win the megamillions wink.gif this project will become a reality! Surely I can go straight to the source of these disposable cameras and get a really great, discounted, high volume purchase price biggrin.gif ... hehe unsure.gif
liebling
maybe kodak would be willing to donate the cameras as an investment....someone takes a bigfoot picture on a kodak camera and kodak gets to use the shot in an advertising deal

it could happen wink.gif

Yes, you'd need some "disposable" income...

I think in other posts I have read that people would want to see another FILM, comparable to the P/G one, clear enough to see, & real movie film (not digital), before they would consider it seriously. So, what kind of weight would a still photo (or collection of them) carry, given the stringent critiques given even to movies?
(Not that stills wouldn't be interesting, however).

True, and I think that would be the ultimate project to take on, everyone with a film camera out in the woods. biggrin.gif Maybe if Bill Gates was really into BF that could be a possibility. We could tell him that Sasquach could be the new Windows mascot! LINUX has a penguin, why not? wink.gif

Or an IMAX crew!! ph34r.gif biggrin.gif

Truth be told, I never go into the woods anymore without one of my cameras. You never know when the photo-op of a life time will appear. I think it is a good idea to encourage people to take cameras with them when they are in a rural setting.

Great thinking! Polaroid is another company that might be approachable.

And a Bigfoot researcher or organization or TV producer with a lot of credibility could ask for a $1500 dashboard-mounted cop-cam with a similar promise of publicity rights if a shot is obtained from a manufacturer like Martel Electronics.

Why not, instead of giving cameras to everyone (which I think would cost A LOT of $$), just offer a reward for anyone with an authentic photo of a bigfoot? The photograph would have to be authenticated, to ensure it's not a hoax and then reward the winning photographer!
