Elkhorn - Linda Godfrey thought the first story she wrote on the subject would be her last.

'The Beast
Of Bray Road'

Linda Godfrey, of rural Elkhorn, wrote "The Beast of Bray Road: Tailing Wisconsin's Werewolf," after 10 years of research and reports from witnesses who say they have seen something resembling a werewolf in Wisconsin.

"The Beast of Bray Road: Tailing Wisconsin's Werewolf" was published by Prairie Oak Press and is priced at $16.95.

But almost immediately after the weekly newspaper in this small city published her article about local werewolf sightings in early 1992, Godfrey's phone started ringing.

Other witnesses came forward. People claiming to be werewolves surfaced. The national media swooped into town.

"I thought people would talk about the story for two weeks and then it would blow over," Godfrey said. "I was so wrong. Interest in the werewolf went on and on. People weren't going to forget about it."

Enticed by the response, Godfrey plunged into what became more than 10 years of digging.

What she found were dozens of accounts of people who have seen something resembling a werewolf in Wisconsin. Six more articles followed. Last year, she decided to write a book about the accounts. "The Beast of Bray Road: Tailing Wisconsin's Werewolf" - a title taken from werewolf sightings along a rural road near Elkhorn - hit book stores last fall.

Along the way, Godfrey, a part-time teacher and librarian at Kansasville Grade School, became convinced that the state is indeed home to . . . something.

"At first I didn't believe there was a man changing into a wolf on Bray Road," Godfrey said this week during an interview at her home, which is tucked along a rural stretch of old farmland eight miles outside Elkhorn. "Now I'm more open."

Not that she thinks it's an actual werewolf.

Spooky stories
Most of the descriptions she collected paint a picture of a furry, eight-foot creature with pointy ears that prowls the night scavenging for road kill and live animals.

The first account Godfrey heard of a wolf or large dog with human characteristics came from a woman in Spring Prairie, a tiny community east of Elkhorn.

In her book, Godfrey, 52, describes how the woman was driving home from Elkhorn one night in 1989 on Bray Road when she came across a "dark brownish-gray" animal the size of a man. The animal was using its claws to eat road kill. After searching through books at the library, the woman found an illustration of a werewolf that looked like the creature she had seen.

Other accounts came from men and women of all ages, whose sightings occurred all over the state, and, in some cases, dated back to the 1920s and 1930s.

Because she was the first person to write about the sightings, Godfrey has come to be viewed as an expert on the subject.

She started making local TV and radio appearances soon after she wrote her first story on the Beast of Bray Road. Over the years, she has obliged reporters from national TV shows, like Inside Edition, who have traveled to Elkhorn to sniff out a werewolf.

For one tabloid, she actually camped out on Bray Road with a photographer and a baked chicken that was placed in a ditch with the goal of enticing the beast. Much to the tabloid's disappointment, no werewolf appeared.

In Godfrey's eyes, it was her duty to help other members of the media.

"I felt that because I had the information, I had an obligation to share it," she said.

Godfrey said she has received even more attention since her book was released last fall.

She has participated in numerous book signings and other types of public appearances to discuss her work. Just last weekend, she addressed a conference hosted by the American Ghost Hunting Society in Alton, Ill.

Godfrey, who has begun researching a follow-up to the "Beast of Bray Road," says she thinks her students at Kansasville Elementary School have benefited from seeing someone they know have a book published.

"It's been good for them to see that authors are real people," she said."

I remember when the Beast of Bray Road stories hit the newspapers for the first time back there in the late 1980's. Elkhorn is only about 30 minutes from the area I grew up in. The Bray Road area is agricultural, with corn being the primary crop, intermittently replanted in soybean to replenish the soil. Treed cover tends to run as small groves of hardwood trees, usually found in and around crop fields of this type. The land is gently rolling with no canyons, caves or hills of significant size. There are no major rivers in the area, a few minor creeks and the only major lakes are located less than 10 miles south. Remember, the lakes in this area are pretty densely populated, being used primarily as summer get-aways for people from the nearby large cities of Milwaukee, WI and Chicago, IL. The lakes are surrounded by manicured lawns, not underbrush, and from the lake you can see chipmunks and squirrels easily scurrying across the lawns, a Bigfoot or Werewolf would be easily spottted.

The only place I can logically think a creature of this size could possibly hide would be in the concrete culverts which run along I-43 to the W and NW of this area acting as artifical caves.

bf43 I checked out that link to Weird Wisconsin and guarantee you that if that creature looked anything remotely resembling the book cover, there would have been so much firepower out there the day after it was spotted the first time, it would have made the invasion of Afghanstan look like a picnic. This is also a dairy, pork and poultry producing area, and the farmers do not take protection of their livestock lightly.

I think the biggest negative to these stories are the inconsistencies in the size estimations. From 5 to 8 foot while standing, but it seems to me that almost every time I heard of it, it was either hunched down in a ditch, or scarfing down some road kill. I don't remember any reference to it running away in a bipedal fashion. It's my own opinion that there may have been something there at one time, but most of it, since it was first publicized, has been due to people expecting to see something. Now when they see anything larger than a rabbit it's automatically categorized as the Bray Road Beast.

Yes, I agree. The perception of what is seen is filtered through their expectations.

And when a *werewolf* ( blink.gif ) is supposededly on the loose, well then.......that's what it MUST'VE been, then...

(Even though they may have realized it was something ordinary, like merely a dog, had they not been so intoxicated on the story, beforehand)

But, if it IS an upright walkin animal, I would say it was a BF, NOT a werewolf...

Maybe a *were-ape*!!

I remember seeing a documentary on this subject...and the scetches which were made from witnesses looked nothing like how a Sasquatch might be expected to appear.

then..there is this...

Yep, I've been on Bray Road before, during and after the sightings of the late '80's. It's been some time since I've been back there, but can't say I saw any evidence of anything unusual out that way. That's not to say Wisconsin doesn't have a lot of places that are of interest to Bigfoot hunters, or those interested in many paranormal events.

I use to love taking newbie hunters into the woods before daybreak, and have them walk in front of me. Then watch their reaction when a stinking grouse would wait till almost stepped on, then they'd fly straight up the front of your body, squallering and beating their wings. Worked better than coffee to wake them up and keep their eyes open after that.

Man where have I been the last 40 years. I'd never heard about this before and its just a couple hours away.

Moregon, where is Bray Road in relationship to Elkhorn? I've got friends who live in Fontana and I make occasional trips to visit. Might be fun just to stomp around a little.

It runs from south of Elkhorn, I-43 to Hwy 12, to County NN to Bray Road. The easiest way is probably north of Elkhorn Hwy 11 East to Bray Road. It's not that long of a road. On Hwy 11 if you get to Bowers Road you went too far.

Thanjk you sir!!

I know I've driven close this area many a time. Just never saw anything.

FYI, I spent a couple of hours driving/walking Bray Rd./Sitler Rd. just last week and saw no signs/tracks of anything unusual. I too was surprised by how few hiding places there'd be for something 'large' in that area, as 95% of the area is flatlands, with only a very few sparcely treed areas. I suppose since pretty much all of the reported sightings happen at night, that might explain how such a 'creature' can get to the area (and back to it's home again), without being tracked. Has anyone heard anything about any recent (say within the past 6 months or so) sightings in that area?

Thanks.

Wow i cant believe this story has hit this site. Im from Fontana wi. Actualy if anyone wants to know the real story of how this got started please visit Bigfoot Airport in Walworth. I know personaly one of the two retired police officers who started this rumor as a joke before people claimed to of seen this so called werewolf. This joke was played on a local reporter because her being to nosey into Police affairs. Its funny this came up i was watching the A&E Bigfoot tape and my Father in laws friend came who is a retired police officer and started telling me how they duped a reporter into thinking they were actualy going looking for this werewolf because she was always so nosey. The reason why i say visit Bigfoot Airport in Walworth,wi is because he is the head of the Airport there and would love tell anyone how this all started. Just ask for Don!

It's gotta be Bigfoot because here's "The most up to date depiction of Bigfoot" as shown on the 'world famous' EB website. Looks like a werewolf to me. And if I'm not mistaken, that looks like John Kerry too. It's all a sinister government plot I tell ya.

Sorry for such a long time with no reply just bought a new house and havent had much time. Down where im at theres not any dense enough forest for looking for BF. But qite often i go up to the hayward area and the U.P. Porcupine mountains. The only wierd encounter i ever had was 4 years ago in the cable area i like to ride the atv trails. I was riding a trail at night wich i dont think is allowed but theres nobody around to bust you anways there was three other atv's with me we stop in a nice area just rows of pines on each side. got off were talking and then we heard thumping like somthing running away from us and it was big realy big. Ive seen bears at night and have spooked them many times and they dont make that kind of noise. I never even thought of investigating more in to the area the next day everyone who were there were realy startled and shocked because usualy an animal leaves the area when they hear the engine or see the light it was like somthing was just waiting there it didnt move until i and my fiends got off there atv's. Anyways i will never know i guess then when i seen this site that moment came to mind instantly.
