Have you read this new sighting report from Jan.'04? http://www.bfro.net/GDB/show_report.asp?id=7804 Moskowitz and Strain say in conclusion that the BF tried to "fool" the observers into thinking it was a Bear by going down on all fours in the road. Any comments on this apparent coping strategy?

Both investigators thought that the animal was likely stressed by the poor weather conditions (snow had gotten fairly low in elevation) and followed the natural terrain (and maybe previous knowledge of the area) into the residential area to savage from trashcans. After being seen the first time, the animal had ample time to exit the area but was still present when the car returned. The animal was apparently unwilling to leave until it had accomplished what it intended. It also appears that when seen the second time, the animal tried to “fool” the witnesses by walking on all fours to give the appearance it was a bear.

Interesting hypothesis. Not much in the report to support it, but logical...
JanV
I strongly suspect that it dropped to "all fours" to minimize its size and avoid exposure. I seriously doubt that it was impersonating a bear or any other animal.
I have read of BF dropping to the ground once it was thought to have realized that it had been observed ....
We have got to be careful to seperate observations from suppositions as to motives, etc. when it comes to these creatures. It is far too easy to anthropormorphize them.

There's absolutely nothing to support that hypothesis.. Those kind of leaps bother me.

Perhaps it went on all fours simply because it was having problems with this icey road and wanted to get the hell out of there...

Usually the simplest explanation is the best.

I agree also. I like how Titus put it that usually the simplest explanation is the best. We don't know what is in the mind of a Sasquatch. I may have looked like that but who really knows.

Hey, I think Kathy and Bob do GREAT work, and in fact, it's an excellent follow-up to a report that had very little information.

They make one "supposition" and you are all right to make your points, but really, there ARE positives here.

We've finally got a mid-winter report from the central sierras in Ca. and it's "scrounging around for its (sic) next meal".
So, How do you feel?

I'm elated right now just to hear of the activity. and the last sentence in an otherwise excellent follow-up doesn't mean it's all a negative to me. I wonder if there's a way to canvass the neighborhood discreetly and see if anyone else saw it or others.
bipto
Oh, I think it's a great report, too. Don't get me wrong. And I'm a huge fan of Bob's. But like Tug said, three words would have made it better.

After further review... I do not see where it says the opinion "the animal tried to “fool” the witnesses by walking on all fours" was Kathy's or Bob's.

Really? Who's was it then? To me, everything after 'Both investigators thought...' is the opinion of the investigators (Kathy and Bob). If it was the opinion of the witnesses, it doesn't read that way.

"What's a widgit?" is a line from Back to School.

The business professor is teaching about starting a company, getting bank loans, etc.

Rodney Dangerfield--"What's the product you're going to manufacture?"
Professor--"It's not relevant for this discussion, but we will call it a 'widgit'."
Rodney--"What's a widgit?" (said with a sarcastic/confused look on face).
Professor--"It's a fictional product, it doesn't matter." (getting frustrated)
Rodney--"Yeah, try telling that to the Bank."
Professor--"Mr. Melon's comments notwithstanding, where shall we build our factory?"
Rodney--"How about Fantasyland!" (class cracks up, teacher loses some sanity)

I find it a good rhetorical question to toss out for odd situations, 'course noone ever seems to get my quote whenever I use it. wacko.gif

I've thrown that quote out before in business meetings when two people are talking about a topic that makes no sense. That usually just draws more confused looks, but I'm still holding out that some day, someone will smile and toss back the "It's a fictional product, it doesn't matter." quote. I wonder if a bigfoot can learn to flap his arms as he runs across the road in an attempt to make any possible witnesses think he is a goose trying to take off!!!! icon_really_happy_guy.gif

I don't think it's a huge leap to say it was trying to make a smaller profile in an attempt to make itself harder to see out in the open. Buy trying to get in its head and saying it was trying to look like a bear is going a little farther than I would. Of course, the skeptic would then say, "Maybe it was a bear." That's just what we need!

It's obvious that we can't know what a bigfoot is thinking; the described behavior may not relate to an effort to imitate another animal, but the concept itself is not outrageous. Mimicry is known from a wide range of animals. Sometimes the mimicry is intentional, as described in the quote shown below.

QUOTE
We observed nine individuals of this species displaying a repertoire of postures and body patterns, several of which are clearly impersonations of venomous animals co-occurring in this habitat. This `dynamic mimicry’ avoids the genetic constraints that may limit the diversity of genetically polymorphic mimics but has the same effect of decreasing the frequency with which predators encounter particular mimics. Additionally, our observations suggest that the octopus makes decisions about the most appropriate form of mimicry to use, allowing it to enhance further the benefits of mimicking toxic models by employing mimicry according to the nature of perceived threats.
