Here is a link to some bear sounds including a moan and the clacking that they do. Might be interesting to review for those of you who have heard sounds, even the wood on wood. When I listened to this the clacking sounded very much like some of the wood knock sounds I've heard. www.bear.org/Kids/Sounds/html

Sosha thanks for adding those sounds. I've recorded and heard a number of times those cougar hissing sounds. It almost sounds as if it were a plane or something however since the sound changes I know it's not. Sounds just like the cougar sound. Do they make this sound for some time say several minutes.
Also how would I take the sound I made on my tiny recorder and transfer it to a wave like you did. Are there directions somewhere for doing this?

My problem when hearing sounds is that I'm totally deaf and rely on hearing aids so I have no idea if what I'm hearing is what other people hear. So it would be nice to put up this one tape and get some ideas as to what people think it is.

I wish I had a recorder going when I was roared and grunted at. It was sooo loud and then two grunts on the end. It just HAD to be a sassy for all that noise.

Goldie,

Well this was a learning experience believe me...but I managed to figure it out.
First I just played my recorded sounds into my computer microphone using the windows "sound recorder" located in your program files (start/programs/accessories/entertainment/sound recorder)..I set it up for recording and recorded each sound and saved it as a .wav file.

After I had those I downloaded a free program called SCMPX. It converts and compresses your wav files into much smaller mp3 files that you can upload to a web page or email. You can get this program here:

http://www.din.or.jp/~ch3/index_e_lite.html

It's a zip file so you unzip it to it's own folder...I named my folder compaudio....then I launched the program and here are insructions:

Compressing your .wav File
1. Open SCMPX.
2. Click the Convert button. A small window giving you the choices, Single File or Multiple Files
appears.
3. Choose Single File.
4. Choose Encoding Mpx.
5. Select the .wav file you want on your machine, and SCMPX opens the Encoder.
6. Change only the bitrate setting in the Encodermake it 128000. The remaining default settings
are sufficient.
7. Click OK
8. SCMPX does the compressing, creating a second copy of your audio file in a compressed MP3
format. Your MP3 file will be about 10 times smaller than your .wav file, greatly reducing the
download time.
9. We suggest deleting the .wav file after running your MP3 file to make sure it converted
correctly. Old .wav files can take up a lot of unnecessary space on your hard drive.
10. After the file has been compressed, you can upload it to WebCT or send it as an attachment in an e-mail.

Once I had the mp3 files I just uploaded them to one of my web pages and created a link that would launch the appropriate player...in this case windows media player...(which I hate) or the Real Audio player for the MP3's. I think the real audio files sound better.

If you have any other questions feel free to message me:-) I love to share what I learn!

Thanks for the directions Sosha. No with all these gizmos on this new computer I got last year it looks like I dont have a microphone so I will have to figure that one out. Then I will try to download the sounds. goldie
