As long as I could camp along the way, I'd love to take this adventure on! I haven't read through the site yet but the route looks great.

How did I miss this one? It sounds like Michael Kaufman loves trees as much as I do (probably doesn't love cutting them down as much as I do though). A 400 mile tree study backpack trip is my dream vacation, especially with the BF bonus added in. Alas, I can only dream.

What a neat plan. I need a knee replacement before going on any hikes...............darn it. Can you take a laptop and transmit progress via a satellite?

I would love to do this. If you're hiking through, let me know when you get to Seiad Valley... I might be able to drive over and meet you! I love to meet fellow Bigfoot researchers.

The different areas are really beautiful. Sometimes I wonder why I live in the east, but there's something very unique about the old mountains around here. It looks like something that would be fun to do sometime though.

Alas, I can only dream. I have to focus on making my house payment. And I can dream of the Appalachian trail too. But alas, only dream. Aaah, slumber, aching bones, calming thought, yes, I can dream (and remember) falling, even sailing, oh to be young and free again.

This goes right over the Klamath River.
Is this the same place you had your sighting, Scott?

I'm jealous that I don't live there or have the time to do it. I did a small chunk of the Appalachian trail for a week and it was great fun even though it rained every day and no campfires are allowed. That trail looks beautiful. I've been up there a few times but not for BF. I always wanted to go on a BF search/gold prospecting trip in that area.

I'm just curious, Furious (ha-ha). Why no fires on the Appalachian Trail? Is that for the whole trail or just in certain areas or because of weather or something else?

If I remember, and that's a big "if", Scotts' sighting was down near the mouth in the redwood belt and Seiad Valley where this hike would cross is quite a ways inland.

What happened to me occured roughly one mile NE of the mouth of the Klamath River.

Everything is strict here on the East coast, I guess to guard against forrest fires. I only hiked and camped a little over 100 miles in NY, NJ and a smidge into Penn. and they have strict policies about no campfires. I also was on it in Maine years ago but I don't remember the policy, but shhhh, we had a fire. I'm not sure about the rest of the trail. They even have high towers just to search for campfires. I climbed an empty one and you can see forever over the landscape. It might be just an East coast thing. Whenever I go to Cali, I'm blown away by the fact that people have fires on the beach. That is an absolute no-no here. Along with no fire policies, parking is also a b*****. In parts of the West coast, I noticed people parking their car any place they wanted (on the grass or side of the road). Here, you have two places, a paid spot or the impound yard.
