Hello out there, I just recently returned from a long military deployment to the Middle East, and am interested to hear about whats new and exciting in the PNW. I am currently stationed in San Diego, but will be seperating from active duty in about 6 months and moving back to Oregon where I will be getting back to my own research once again. Trying to put some stuff together for next year- anyone interested? Thanks

Welcome home! Where in the mid east were you? I just got back from Tal Afar, Iraq area in June! (civ. Contractor, not KBR!)

I was in the UAE doing port security, I actually hurt my back in rough seas on a boat, so I got home a couple weeks early. Enjoying the weather here, it hit 156 degrees in late August!!

Welcome back from another Salemite! One major change since you've been gone is the resurgence of the cougar population in this area....There was actually a sighting INSIDE the city limits earlier this summer on the south end of town! Mill City and Detroit are having major sightings right now...and no stray cats either...So just be aware of that when you do get back into these super gorgeous ancient forests of ours...........
hmmm...I wonder how the kitties are affecting the big guy...

Oh man! Hope your back is better! Travelled through Dubai alot. Parts of it are gorgeous but you gotta watch yourself, you know? You're right about the heat though. The highest that I know of feeling was 135! People were always saying "but it's a dry heat though, right?". Yeah, so's the flame from my bic but it'll still burn ya!

Interesting thought how a carnivore like a big cat affects the BF... Thanks for the heads up, seems like they're making a comeback in a lot of places on the west coast lately. Guess thats a hazard of what we do, but I am excited to get back at the search up there!
As far as the heat (grape ape), in Dubai, the humidity is terrible! I would take a dry 135 any day lol! But my back is getting in shape after working with a chiropractor, thanks

Yeah, the cougars are making it into city limits here in the Puget Sound too. One was killed by a woman driving on 520 3 weeks ago, another was caught and collared in Discovery Park in Seattle city limits. Since the dog hunts were outlawed, they've spread all over and into too many areas here. Time for some hunts again.

Hey welcome back, so when are you going to be regrowing the nose hairs burned out by the 156 degrees? Dang Bigfoot and Cougars should be a cakewalk, in less than 100 degree weather and no rolling motion underfeet!

Thats unbelievable... I just left the Seattle area 2 years ago and I never saw even a track in all my trecks in that area. Guess I'll have to start carrying the .357 again lol. Yep, great being home- speaking of nose hairs, all I dreamed of out there was the smell of pine trees in the Northwest mountains! Already getting my gear together for 2010!

I've been out a couple times with nothing of significance to report. I'm near Medford, in Southern Oregon and usually limit my "research" to Southern Oregon, from about Medford to the coast, Medford, Prospect, Grants Pass, Cave Junction areas, south to the California border.

Beautiful countrty... I lived in Medford for a few years and always thought the Rouge River area would be a great place to look. Then there are plenty of historical reports from the Northern CA area from loggers and all.

We camped out at Indian Henry campground (on the Upper Clackamas) a couple times this summer. The first time we were there (late May) I would wake up at 2-3am and hear coyotes howling; and mixed in the middle of the howls I heard what sounded like a woman’s scream. It freaked me out, because I thought some one was being attacked, but it continued on for a long while and it didn’t sound exactly human. It happened every night we were there, but I was the only one that heard it, everyone else was asleep. Then later in the summer when we were up there I heard it again, and this time my dog heard it too because he perked up at attention when it happened.
At the time I thought it might be BF screams, because I couldn’t imagine what else it could be. But lately I read on the web that cougars can sound much like a woman’s scream. Anyone else know of this or heard of such a thing?

I've heard them myself, OregonMan, and I have even heard stories of people thinking it was a woman being lured to the area the cougar/panther was and being attacked or close calls. It can sound just like a woman screaming and is unnerving when it's close.
