'Baby bigfoot' sighted in Florida

MACCLENNY, Fla. (AP) - Whether the mystery critter roaming northern Florida is an orangutan, a "baby Bigfoot" or something else, wildlife officials think it might have a bit of Homer Simpson in it.

After a bear hunter said an animal that could be an orangutan stole jelly doughnuts from him, a wildlife investigator has tried to use sweet treats to lure the creature into the open in Baker County.

There have been several sightings of what witnesses have described as a "big orange ball of fur," though officials have yet to confirm it's an orangutan, said Karen Parker, a spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Fish and wildlife investigator Ken Holmes laid doughnuts at the base of a tree in hopes of catching the animal, but it eluded him.

It's illegal to own an orangutan in Florida without a commercial permit, and none are registered in the area, Holmes said. The closest zoo is in Jacksonville, about 30 miles east, but it hasn't reported any missing animals.

Some residents think the animal is a spider monkey or even a squirrel. Holmes said he also got a call from a Bigfoot research group asking about it.

"I can't confirm that it wasn't Bigfoot," he said. "That's one possibility. It's just not a possibility I'm exploring."

Darn kids, always stealing our jelly doughnuts!

Lots of the skunk ape sightings, are the orange orang type, but with very long shaggy hair, where orang's have relatively short hair. Common orang's are easy to pick out.

Florida is so hard to call due to physical reports of so many primates having escaped over the years that were never caught. God knows what is out there Skunk Ape, Bigfoot or others

This is an old story - happened at least a year ago.

We have a lot of escaped/feral apes and monkeys living in the swamps here, and a lot of skunk-ape sightings are of those. However, there are also a lot that aren't, that is, the eye witness accounts more closely describe a very large, tall, bipedal man-like creature covered with hair.

These are most likely not orangutans or chimps.

cool.gif Interesting point you make, 'Robert'. It strikes me that Florida may well be the only State which can lay claim to having enough endemic creatures, natural or otherwise, that could legitimately be mistaken for Big Fuzzy. Hmm... that really makes the BF identification prospect very difficult and suspect for you folks, as if the task wasn't difficult enough already. This is so unlike where I live where, if you see something like BF walking upright on two legs, it is almost certainly BF. (There aren't many 'snow monkeys' around this part of the woods, ahem).

Yes, that's correct, and I fully expect if I ever do see one it will probably be some kind of feral zoo ape.

BTW, Robert is my birth name... no need to put quotation marks around it! biggrin.gif
