I saw this and thought I'd bring it here. While it might not be from a stringent enough source for some, it's a very interesting article and worth a read.
I'd particularly be interested in hearing from anybody trained in linguistics who reviews this article. It makes intuitive sense at some level, and I don't have to have my arm twisted to have a hunch that our friends may be able to make gutteral utterances (as I've recorded several of them), but I'm curious but not convinced about the claim that it is a prototypical or native american derivative language from Chehalis and related backward in time to other tongues across the globe.

Good question. Maybe those wails, howls, grunts, etc. are just for a specific message that can be heard from a farther distance than normal talking.
