Full Version: Barred owl vocal to dog barking?

I have twice heard what I thought was a barred owl vocal that turned into a dog barking vocal. I believe that it came from the same animal; I mean it was not an owl and a dog, but the same animal making both vocals. The first time was about three years ago and I searched the area for BF sigh and came up empty.

The next time was the other night around 3 AM, I woke up with a leg cramp and was in the yard trying to walk off the cramp. I heard the vocal and thought barred owl and then it switched to a dog barking like vocal, and then switched back to an owl like vocal and switched a number of times. There was another owl vocal that seemed to be answering farther away and I could just barley hear that one so I can’t say about that one, other that an owl like vocal.

Both times I was not looking for BF and have was not prepared to make a recording. Barred owls are very common in our area and we live in a wooded area.

Has anyone heard a barred owl make a dog barking vocal?

Barred Owls have deep, dark mysterious eyes that seem to reflect the very soul of the wilderness. No one can help but be in awe of their beauty. They occupy lowland, wet woods and swamps, consuming amphibians, small snakes and rodents. They are the most vocal of Ohio's owls, with calls consisting of cackles, laughs, woops and catlike yells. Sometimes it can sound like a barking dog.

Page 194 of Vol. 2 of the Birds of Prey book in Bent's "Life Histories" series includes the following in discussing Barred Owl vocalizations: " Mr. Shelley tells me that one night when he was out coon hunting with his hound, a barred owl four times gave a barking note, so much like the baying of his hound that he was completely fooled, until he traced the bark to the owl."

Owls are wonderful, and a sasquatch researcher should be familiar with all the sounds owls can make in their territory:

Once when I was on a guarding job just at nightfall I looked up at a light pole and saw a beautiful, huge horned owl looking down at me. Such a lucky moment. smile.gif

Thanks Moregon and others for you reply.

My daughter and I would leave for school and work and some mornings a large barred owl would be setting on a mail box on the road above our house. It was about 18 or 20 inches high and was beautiful. I respect and admire these animals and some of their vocals can scare the heck out of ya!!!!!!!!

They do make some fascinating sounds! It's easy to see how a person could wonder if some of these sounds might be coming from a bf.

There's one called a Barking Owl near the bottom of the page at the link Vilnoori provided.

I once got my witches hat blown off by the flapping wings of a very large white owl at Boo at the Zoo in Little Rock! I love that memory! biggrin.gif

I hear them all the time but haven't been lucky enough to get a clear look at one... I had no idea they were that large! Love hearing them though. smile.gif

Barred Owls are beautiful birds and I always enjoy listening to them. Sometimes they alight in the trees behind my house. Recently I saw a pair of young ones on a log about 5 feet above the ground. They were gorgeous and of course I did not have my camera with me.

I recorded this sound several years ago - at the time I thought Barred Owl but I have not heard a recording that sounds like this one. Who knows?

Unusual owl?

I can hear the call early in the file, but that last melodious call can't possibly be a barred owl? Have you heard RiverRun's NW Ga. sound file that is similar to this melodious sound at the end of your file? It may be one of the one's he uploaded to your site under guest unknown sounds?
