Is there a Latitude / Longitude descriptor for the Foley swamp in Oscoda County ?
I would be interested in looking this area over on google earth, and a possible trip there.

Drew
Luzerne, MI is the closest city I believe.
lookinginmichigan
Approx. 44 38' 48.24" N and 84 21' 18.61" W. This area covers many square miles. Read some of the reports and follow the directions to the locations. These coordinates can be reached by M72 East towards Mio, (north) on Meridian Rd, (east) on Randell Rd then (north) on Foley. Stop anywhere along Foley road and head by foot north into the swamp. Have fun!

Drew is correct, Foley swamp is between Luzerne and Mio. Very easy to find.

Is Foley swamp a true swamp in the proper sense of word or is it a low area kept wet by the Ausable river ? And is there any evidence of plants or plant life that grows there that is any different then in other locations in michigan ?

We just came home from the north and really wanted to drive around the area @ Mio. Reports for awhile have me believing that it is a good area to look, in the lower peninsula. What nightvision do you have? The prices stop me cold from buying a set. Gen 1 monocular seems a waste of time. I hear they have a Gen 4 now. Well, good luck on your efforts. Ever look in the Seney Refuge in da U.P.????

Wild, I was just thinking of this place... if you look on a map, the human population is very low, there are only a few towns in the entire county, most of it is the wildlife refuge. That said, I grew up in MI and my family is full of yoopers. None of them have ever seen BF or know anyone who has. Given that most yoopers live in the woods, hunting and fishing, etc, I do find it hard to believe BF could escape detection up there, in spite of the low human population. And many parts of the West have a much lower population density of people, so I can see how BF could live undetected in parts of the US. However, MI, being surrounded by the Great lakes, may have sort of an island effect going, and even BF passing through may get effectively 'trapped' there by the water. I do remember a possible sighting report in Seney Wildlife refuge, will look around for that...

There WAS a recent posting of a sighting along the road that runs near the Manistique River. He was driving to Manistique from the north. I actually considered bringing the bicyles up to Seney after reading the post. Not enough time this year. The list a cabin in the refuge one can use for camping. It is open mid May thru mid October. Roads to drive and ride throughout. Might be to busy during the day, but if one camped there....... scratchhead.gif

Finlander, i dunno what model unit i have, i got it online from Russia. i do know they are a dual mode unit w/ Infrared and near zero lux amplifaction. And no they were not cheap ( happy birthday and merry christmas to me ) No, i do frequent the UP ( st. ignace , new berry and paradise ) i never have looked for BF in the seney.
i am mainly interested in the "foley" swamp in the northern lower.
I do very much agree about Mi having a island effect, unless we can swimming to BF's attributes whistling.gif

I believe both...you can get in deep in some spots other areas are flood plain.
scibaer
I was hoping to hear just that.. it would make for better suitable cover i believe. google maps dont show enough detail at this time to get a real sense of the terrain. after deer season i'll go see whats what, under the pretense of a hog scouting expo . till then i need to gather all the info i can
finlander
Russian made n.v. I have read are Gen 1 tubes. The warranties arent that long. Walmart sells a Night Owl monocular in their scope case. It was really temoting to 'rent one' for a day or two when I am up there and then return it. Those Gen 1's are around $200.

Shoot scibaer, you're just up the road from me and my hubby! Mio's a great area, and I've had two people tell me stories from the Foley swamp area (not IN the swamp, but one right off Randell Rd., and the other between Luzerne and Mio, closer ot Luzerne). I'm thinking a group trip may be in order come spring...what'cha all think? smile.gif

Sounds great! Send the $300.00 checks to Drew, Stacy you're in charge of finding the free campsites, everyone else bring your own food and gear, I'll provide the supervision.

BTW, Tornado is believed to be a sockpuppet for Bulletmaker, and if you read the deleted posts, you would see that noone at JREF 'crucified' him.

laugh.gif There ya go! I do know of several good campsites that can accommodate larger groups, either east of Mio or closer to Foley.

I had a not so sure encounter near this area back in the '80s. It was on Indian lake near Glennie, MI.

Good luck on the expo and let us know what you find.

Cool...I would be up for it, I'm not paying $300 to anyone though.
StacyInMI
That's good, 'cause if you did, we'd have to slap ya upside the head and call ya "ignernt". laugh.gif

Stacy,
yeah a group expo sounds good and we prolly could get away with camping on state land. I am for sure doing a trip to Foley this winter ( mid Jan ) , no foliage, snow makes for easy tracking .. but thats not saying we cant try several times a year and see what works and what dont. I should say right up front, so we know who is who and what is what, i'm in the group that believes we need a body. so would i shoot a BF ? yup, but dont plan on hunting one down unless i believe i could do so safely ( all aspects of the word apply ) if i am close to you, we ( my wife and you/yours ) could get together and put a face to the texts, so to speak.
lookinginmichigan
You can camp anywhere on federal or state land free. Minimal rules and regulations have to be followed but it's no problem. As I recall it is federal land/forest north of the river and state land south. So basically Foley swamp area is in state land.
scibaer
What is the general size of Foley swamp and what are its boundries ? Does it cover both sides of the Ausable river or encompass Mio or Luzerene ?
lookinginmichigan
As I understand it...the swamp area is south of the river between Mio and Luzerene. As to it's actual land coverage I'm not too sure, I will start looking and see if the answer is available.
scibaer
I took some time and gave Foley swamp a good look on google maps. If you follow Randal road to Foley rd, foley runs north more or less and eventually dead ends in very low swampy area where the rivers washes out. looks like great place to do a bit of BF type snooping around.
lookinginmichigan
Did you check it out on the ground or by map?
scibaer
by google earth actually

If you stop in town at the mio DNR station you can pick up a Map of the area for about $4.00-$6.00.It will show you the boundaries.there is private land on the left or towards the southwest of foley at the dead end.Just remember to always keep firewood in the camp sight after you leave the sight. For some reason it has been that way there.
scibaer
Thanks for the info Julio. I will do that, if the DNR offers maps i'll check online to see if they are there too, most times they are.
um, campsite ? firewood ? nope not me thats not my style, i do things a bit different and leave no kind of 'footprint' that i was ever there.
but its no to likely that i'll get up there till after firearm deer season, i have to get 250 custom .44 mag rounds made up for 2 guys before season gets here, plus i need to get my own stuff ready, between finishing up my gun room and 'real' job duties, lol
lookinginmichigan
I got a very detailed map free at the gas station/IGA on M72 for free. It's a federal map from the Dept. of the Interior listing all the roads as they appear on the signs in county number. As soon as I got that I was in and out of the area like a local.
