I think it is only the wingless species that went extinct, The Aquatic ones may still exist in the sewers of NY C.H.U.D

I don't think bulldogs have tails, do they? It does look like a dog though. Maybe a beagle that's been dead on the beach for awhile. But I doubt that's its head. It looks photoshopped to me. Wrong size and the interface to the neck looks suspicious. The head, after all, is what makes it an unknown "beast". So that's the likely part that's been photoshopped. I also don't see any sand on the head (as for the body) and the shadow of the head doesn't look like it matches the contour of the head. Why only 1 picture? I think if this were a real animal, this story would have had legs by now.

Jul 30 2008, 04:31 PM
I thought maybe bulldog because the nose seems quite short, but I'm not sure about they tail. Every one I've ever seen has that little nubby tail, but is that natural or are they cropped?
Gigantofootecus
Jul 30 2008, 04:43 PM
I've only seen them with stubby tails. Do they crop their tails (as for Dobermans)? I never understood the practice. The body of this beast is pretty stocky looking though. At any rate, I think the head is BS.

They are born with tails, they are cropped as are their ears.

Sorry, can't be. One cannot skin the shell of a turtle in such a neat fashion. A turtle's carapace is integral to its internal skeleton. Also, turtles don't have teeth, which this creature has.

I like the decomposing dog analysis, but a couple of things give me pause:
1) Speaking of paws, I'd sure like a better look at the forelimbs. I'm not sure why they look like flippers, especially considering that the hindlimbs look pretty typically canine.
2) Speaking of canines, I can see how it looks like the nasal bones are protruding to create the "beak" effect, but jaws and teeth are the most durable part of any corpse, and I'm hard pressed to envision a scenario in which a run of the mill dead dog lost the distal end of its muzzle.
3) Where are its ears, or at least where its ear openings? It looks like there is some remnant fur around the neck or head, but where are the ears? When carcasses like this get scavenged - especially on a beach - its usually the eyes that go first, not the ears.
4) Size is difficult to determine. The Jeannie Moos piece on CNN had local surfer dudes claiming they had found the skeletal remains of this thing, and they looked really small. Maybe this wasn't a pit bull, some some little dog - those things even look funny when they're alive.
Anyway, I'd like a bit more info on this before concluding that it's a run of the mill weird looking carcass. 1-4 above make me wonder if there hasn't been some doctoring involved in this story. . .
Meantime, Montauk is an awesomely beautiful place at the very eastern end of Long Island. If you've ever been trapped in the urban blight that is New York City or the suburban blight that is Nassau County, then it's totally worth it to just keep going some time, heading east 'til you can't head east no mo'. Eastern Suffolk County really is a mix of open farmland, forest, charming seaside villages, and of course, high end mansions and beautiful beaches. The area is primo for birding, probably at its best in mid winter when the bitter winds keep less hearty tourists away. Yes the people tuawk funny, but it's always worth the trip. Just be sure you're off the roads before Billy Joel decides it's time to head home from the local waterin' hole.

looks like we were doing the same thing, looking for comparison skulls. The pit bull skull is the closest canine skull I found. The racoon's nasal cavity looks almost identical to me though. I just don't think that's a racoon, however.

I think the reason the lower teeth look strange is because there isn't any upper teeth. I don't know what happened to that poor animal.. seems like the upper teeth are wrecked or missing. Anybody know if there are any pics of the skeleton of the animal after it decomposed? I saw a clip of a couple of guys holding what they claimed was the skeleton up on a stick.
Twinkletoes, I found bulldog skulls and that didn't match up at all with any of those. The teeth and facial skeleton are all out of line with what's laying on the sand.

Cool animals...when they have all their hair, and they aren't decomposing on a beach.

One of the guys that found the body is wearing the piece of cloth on a string around his neck. I'm sure it's a dog but whatever it is obviously had human contact before it died.
