Looks like a photoshopped dead shaved dog
Incorrigible1
Viral marketing, is my guess. Cartoon Network has a show starting soon about cryptids.
Scooby
Is it a bear with mange?

Wait a seal with mange!

Hi

I think it is only the wingless species that went extinct, The Aquatic ones may still exist in the sewers of NY C.H.U.D

Kinda looks like a bulldog with his lips uh... not there. blink.gif

That's what I thought too Stacy. Poor thing

Wonder what movie they're trying to promote. scratchhead.gif

I don't think bulldogs have tails, do they? It does look like a dog though. Maybe a beagle that's been dead on the beach for awhile. But I doubt that's its head. It looks photoshopped to me. Wrong size and the interface to the neck looks suspicious. The head, after all, is what makes it an unknown "beast". So that's the likely part that's been photoshopped. I also don't see any sand on the head (as for the body) and the shadow of the head doesn't look like it matches the contour of the head. Why only 1 picture? I think if this were a real animal, this story would have had legs by now.
StacyInMI
I thought maybe bulldog because the nose seems quite short, but I'm not sure about they tail. Every one I've ever seen has that little nubby tail, but is that natural or are they cropped?
Gigantofootecus
I've only seen them with stubby tails. Do they crop their tails (as for Dobermans)? I never understood the practice. The body of this beast is pretty stocky looking though. At any rate, I think the head is BS.
Teresa
They are born with tails, they are cropped as are their ears.
Kim
Turtle without shell.

Not sure what it was, but I bet it smelled terrible. icon_lil_sick_guy.gif

Turtle without shell.

Sorry, can't be. One cannot skin the shell of a turtle in such a neat fashion. A turtle's carapace is integral to its internal skeleton. Also, turtles don't have teeth, which this creature has.
twinkletoes
Whatever it is, it looks disgusting.

I like the decomposing dog analysis, but a couple of things give me pause:

1) Speaking of paws, I'd sure like a better look at the forelimbs. I'm not sure why they look like flippers, especially considering that the hindlimbs look pretty typically canine.

2) Speaking of canines, I can see how it looks like the nasal bones are protruding to create the "beak" effect, but jaws and teeth are the most durable part of any corpse, and I'm hard pressed to envision a scenario in which a run of the mill dead dog lost the distal end of its muzzle.

3) Where are its ears, or at least where its ear openings? It looks like there is some remnant fur around the neck or head, but where are the ears? When carcasses like this get scavenged - especially on a beach - its usually the eyes that go first, not the ears.

4) Size is difficult to determine. The Jeannie Moos piece on CNN had local surfer dudes claiming they had found the skeletal remains of this thing, and they looked really small. Maybe this wasn't a pit bull, some some little dog - those things even look funny when they're alive.

Anyway, I'd like a bit more info on this before concluding that it's a run of the mill weird looking carcass. 1-4 above make me wonder if there hasn't been some doctoring involved in this story. . .

Meantime, Montauk is an awesomely beautiful place at the very eastern end of Long Island. If you've ever been trapped in the urban blight that is New York City or the suburban blight that is Nassau County, then it's totally worth it to just keep going some time, heading east 'til you can't head east no mo'. Eastern Suffolk County really is a mix of open farmland, forest, charming seaside villages, and of course, high end mansions and beautiful beaches. The area is primo for birding, probably at its best in mid winter when the bitter winds keep less hearty tourists away. Yes the people tuawk funny, but it's always worth the trip. Just be sure you're off the roads before Billy Joel decides it's time to head home from the local waterin' hole.

I have now heard raccoon and fox and dog. Jeff Corwin seems convinced that it's a raccoon. The flies might give a little more idea about the size of this thing.

It's a dog. The tissue that should be over the nasal bones are gone. The teeth look canine to me.
Scooby
I skinned a bunch of coons back in the day. This looks nothing like them. But I must add that mine where fresh and not soaking in water and rotting on the beach. The ears just don’t look right. I need something to judge size.
CrimsonGoblin
dog skull for comparison

These are raccoon skulls.
Notice the teeth in the bottom jaw.

looks like we were doing the same thing, looking for comparison skulls. The pit bull skull is the closest canine skull I found. The racoon's nasal cavity looks almost identical to me though. I just don't think that's a racoon, however. scratchhead.gif

Hi

Excellent job thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

I agree T, it definitely looks more like a dog at first glance.

The large teeth in the lower jaw just look strange to me for some reason.
twinkletoes
To me it looks like a dead bulldog with one extra long claw, disgusting nonetheless. Yep it sure looks like the dead thing is giving everyone the finger..

I think the reason the lower teeth look strange is because there isn't any upper teeth. I don't know what happened to that poor animal.. seems like the upper teeth are wrecked or missing. Anybody know if there are any pics of the skeleton of the animal after it decomposed? I saw a clip of a couple of guys holding what they claimed was the skeleton up on a stick.

Twinkletoes, I found bulldog skulls and that didn't match up at all with any of those. The teeth and facial skeleton are all out of line with what's laying on the sand.
plaidlemur
The raccoon skull seals it. That thar's a raccoon.

Cool animals...when they have all their hair, and they aren't decomposing on a beach.

I found this quote from a news site from a witness:

It was relatively small, roughly 21/2 to 3 feet long, he said.

Hi

When i first seen that thing it didn't look very big, I am still wondering what happened to the upper teeth, Kinda strange everything else is in place

I can't believe I'm spending my Friday night trying to figure out what the heck the "Montauk monster" is. It's true, I have no life. LOL

Is that a strip of cloth tied around the front leg or skin?
CrimsonGoblin
One of the guys that found the body is wearing the piece of cloth on a string around his neck. I'm sure it's a dog but whatever it is obviously had human contact before it died.
billgreen2005bigfoot
this is a very interesting unexplained animal indeed, yes its getting alot media coverage. i realy like above opinions about this creature. thanks bill . updates as they accure. smile.gif this is great new thread as well???
