All,

I was inspired by a comment from a friend today to "do what I can do to help" with the research efforts.

I've heard repeated accounts that Mr. Green's sightings database is on a legacy system and can't be translated. I'd like to offer Mr. Green my services at no cost to convert his database to a more current RDMS. I've worked the last 12 years with databases and data marts/warehouses. I suspect that updating to a modern RDMS and leveraging existing BI technology might reveal some interesting patterns in his data.

Unfortunately, I do not have his contact information. If someone could provide me with an e-mail or number to call, I'd like to get in touch with him to make the offer. If you have a way to contact him, please PM me and I'll do what I can.

Regards,
Unixguy

John Green's database is now in an Excel format and does not have normalized field data. It has been translated into at least 2 relational databases already.

It is very nice of you to offer to do this for Mr Green.

I forwarded unixguy's offer on to John. Below is his reply.

Thanks Craig. I have had a professional team working for some time now to put the database in a form where anyone can work with it, and when they are done it will be available on a website. Otherwise this would have been an offer I might well have been glad to accept. Ironically there is apparently nothing new that exceeds, or perhaps even matches, the search capabilities of the MS-DOS software I was set up with 18 years ago. It seems that the enormous strides made since have all been in other directions.
