Interesting news article, albeit perhaps a bit tongue-in-cheek:

Satellite searches could spot Bigfoot
Bobby Orangeboom
12ft Bigfoot ??

6,000 - 10,000 in N America alone ??

Families of them ??

Surely a coordinated, close search of satellite images would reveal dozens, if not hundreds or thousands, of Bigfoot in remote areas at any given time ??

Somebody sign this Radford Guy up, he knows everything about them, & more... coverlaugh.gif

Note Mr. Radford's dubious title: "LiveScience's Bad Science Columnist"

That's funny. I believe he posts regularly over on Cryptomundo as well as authoring a book on lake monsters.

Given that this truly remarkable technology has been unable to find Mr. Fosset or his aircraft - I'm not so sure about spotting a Bigfoot. I have to confess, I have no idea what the capabilities are of the technology in use as far as easily identifying details such as being able to distinguish that a vaguely humanoid figure, isn't just a darned humanoid.

Just imagine how many more "blobsquatches" this technology will add to the fray! MILLIONS, and MILLIONS!!!!

Ben Radford wrote this apparently, which is cool.

I have trouble imagining a 12-foot bigfoot though. Maybe something will come from Loch Ness...

It's funny, and I'm sure I'm not alone, but I started thinking of this approach when everyone was scanning images searching for Fossett. I actually tried to see if I could find any of my neighborhood deer even on the Google Earth maps but was unable to pinpoint any even though I think the resolution is there. You can certainly find people but I think the problem is at the resolution I've seen it would be pretty hard to get much more than a blobsquatch. But it would certainly be interesting to try to find anything suggestive.

Very interesting article. It should be noted that the higher the resolution, the more data (raw images) there will be to examine each in mind-numbing or mindless detail...Check out one of the mechanical turk applications...I gave it a try for a few hours when Jim Gray was missing out past the Farallons. Not too much fun. Any algorythims for this sorta visual sorting?

I think this is a service that Amazon provides. And it is powered by... kids in India! In other words, they have an offshore team that does things for people rather than building automated systems for it.

I've used the satellite searches looking for Mr. Fossett. I don't know if it was called 'Mechanical Turk' or not.
Edit: I just checked Robo's post on the Steve Fossett thread and, yes, it is Amazon Mechanical Turk.

Woo-Hoo! Oh, wait a minute. You know of course that you've now doomed the thread to mediocrity and a short lifespan, right?
(So maybe it wasn't such a good thing after all? scratchhead.gif )
