Bigfoot May Gain Protection by Canadian Parliament

A member of the Canadian Mounted Police by the name of Mike Lake has officially notified the Canadian Parliament that he believes that Bigfoot should be added to the Nation's, Species at Risk Act. This is similar to the Endangered Species List in the United States.

According to Mr. Lake, the creature that is also known as the Sasquatch is real, and is endangered. The reason, he says that there have not been more sightings in North America of Bigfoot is because the creature is endangered, not necessarily shy like many believe.

Currently there are 516 plants and animals that are listed in the Species at Risk Act in Canada. There are many other candidates for this list that are being considered including the Whooping Crane, the Blue Whale, and Red Mulberry trees.

There have been similar motions to add Bigfoot to the Endangered Species list in the United States. Congress has refused to listen to these requests because Congress does not believe that there is solid proof to the existence of Bigfoot.

There is a lot of evidence that point to the possibility of the existence of Bigfoot. The fact that 90% of the western Provinces of Canada are uninhabited leads many to believe that there may be plants and animals living there that have yet to be discovered by modern man.

The story of Bigfoot dates back before the discovery of North America. Many Native American and Canadian tribes recorded stories about a creature that was half man and half beast that wondered around in the western States and Provinces.

The interest in Bigfoot mostly started back in 1811 when David Thompson discovered large, well-defined footprints in Jasper, Alberta, Canada. The Patterson-Gimlin Film of Bigfoot was shot on October 20, 1967. this film of the creature walking through a clearing in the woods in California has become the most popular bit of evidence for the existence of the creature.

All of the recorded sightings of Bigfoot have been greeted with speculation in the United States and Canada. All of the photos and film of Bigfoot have also been met with speculation as to whether or not the creature was real, or if a human in a suit was pictured.

It will be interesting to see if the Canadian Parliament accepts the bid to place Bigfoot of the list for protected animals and plants. If the Canadian Government takes this step, the United States Government might soon follow that lead of its northern neighbor.

Ooops. Looks like someone screwed up. icon_razz.gif

It would be funny if this was passed without being taken seriously, but later could be leveraged into getting funding for research. I doubt it though. 'Silly' things are brought up all the time and quashed by others.

How could this piece of legislation possibly even be introduced without any hard proof that bigfoot even exists?

Is this guy just trying to attract attention to himself?

Could this possibly be related to Todd Standing and his Sylvanic stuff? Didn't he say that if BF got listed as a protected species he would show the "real proof" he has been holding off on? I thought last I read he was showing his video up in Canada; but I have not been following his claims too closely so I could be wrong.

Yeah, if you follow the links I gave you'll see the story is old news. (early May 2007)

Yes this is the old Todd Standing online and offline effort to get enough signatures on petitions so he could get this protection measure into Parliament. MP Mike Lake released a statement later that specifically said he does not believe in Bigfoot. He had to present it to Parliament because Standing and crew met all the criteria required for such action, meaning number of signatures and presentation was in the correct format.

Statement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 03-MAY-2007

OTTAWA - Recently, there have been misleading stories from various media sources regarding a petition presented in the House of Commons to recognize Bigfoot as a protected species.

On March 28, 2007, Mike Lake, MP for Edmonton - Mill Woods - Beaumont tabled in the House of Commons a petition brought forward by one of his constituents. This constituent had collected signatures from a few hundred individuals, the vast majority of whom reside outside Mr. Lake’s constituency. The petition was deemed by the House of Commons’ Clerk of Petitions to be in order.

“I take seriously my responsibility to represent allof my constituents, regardless of whether or not I agree with their views. If a legitimate petition is brought forward by one of my constituents and deemed to be in order, I feel it is my duty to table it in the House.”

At no time did Mr. Lake speak in the House of Commons regarding the petition. At no point has Mr. Lake indicated his support for this petition.

Standing produced two versions of the petition, one to be presented to Canadian Parliament, the other to the US Congress. So how detailed were these petitions, and were they full of legalese to impress our Congress and give them something real to bite on and maybe give a moments thought to possibly protecting this species? Judge for yourself... a copy of the US version of the petition is below...

To: U.S. Congress
For the past 2 years a small independent group of researchers have been covertly compiling undisputable documentation of their struggle to prove the most controversial anthropological issue in the history of North America.

The discovery of a species that was formally though to be extinct, scientifically classified as Gigantopithecus and now commonly referred to as Bigfoot.

Are findings are scientifically repeatable, consequently we must have government implemented protection for this species before we can publicly release our findings.

Therefore we, the undersigned, wish for the immediate protection of the species*(*: as defined in "THE WORLD DICTIONARY, Thorndike, Barnhart, 1988 ed., "Doubleday & Co., Inc.") known heretofore as, Bigfoot, Sasquatch, et al..

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
