I am a native of Wells and graduated from Escanaba Area High School in 1971. I went on to get a forestry degree from Michigan Technological University in 1976 and worked for the U. S. Forest Service, Mead Corp. and Champion International, plus I was the county forester for Alger county in 1987.

Regarding the story about finding bigfoot in the U.P., I have timber cruised everywhere in the U. P. and know it like the back of my hand. I did this for 10 years and not once did I ever see, hear or find any tracks of bigfoot.

Since I was in swamps many times that people have not visited in more than 100 years, if there was a bigfoot, that would be where they would be. I was in many muddy areas in swamps and in lowlands and not once did I see a track of bigfoot.

I also cruised timber around the Marquette area in rainy and sunny weather and found no sign of bigfoot tracks there either, or sightings. I also cruised timber in highland areas everywhere in the U.P and no sign of bigfoot there either.

I have only heard one person in 10 years tell me they saw something that walked upright across a road at night. Other than that, in my 10 years of being in the woods everywhere in the U.P. I saw no sign of bigfoot at all, not even in the Porcupine Mountains.

I feel Matthew Moneymakers€™ search for bigfoot in the U.P. is a folly. The real people to ask about bigfoot are the lumberjacks and the foresters, as they are in the woods a lot and know the difference between a bear and bigfoot or any other animal.

If there were bigfoot in the U.P., I would have found a track or some sort of evidence during that time as I have walked many miles of muddy and dry logging roads of all sorts, new and old ones, or would have heard from other foresters of a bigfoot sighting or track.

Obviously a conspiracy by wood products people, to act like there is no bigfoot. Because the endangered species act would take away their logging interests.

Pooey on Paul

PS- I went to Michigan Tech, and never saw a Bigfoot either. I did see drunk students crossing the road at night on foot though.

Wow, he means to tell us that even though the loggers are out in the woods every day with their noisy, smelly, frightening equipment, they never had a bigfoot approach them to shake hands?! Well, that proves it, they don't exist! Whew........that was easy! new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Well...if he does live and work in the area as he states, his assertion should have obvious merit. But on the other hand, are you going to believe a group of 'joes' led by Matt Moneymaker is going to come in and find BF in a matter of days?

Yeah, all it proves is he's typical and not particularly lucky. I figure your chances of seeing a sasquatch on one outing into the woods at about 0.01 percent, the number going up by 0.01 percent each time you try again. If you camp overnight in remote areas, your chances would go up considerably. If you hunt deer, again, your chances go up considerably, as this is a shared prey item with the Big Guy.

I have heard that they are sometimes attracted by logging equipment that is left unattended, but if he was only involved with active logging, then little chance.

I've never seen Paul Bader, so I suppose he doesn't exist either.

moregon has posted some numbers in an article on SRI's site. The article doesn't give numbers for Michigan, but for Washington, there's 1 sighting per 15,958 people based on counts from the BFRO database. That works out to.... like 0.006% I think. And that's the state with the highest sighting count. Seems like chances of seeing a squatch is pretty low anywhere.

He also has an older thread on this forum with more interesting numbers worthy of perusal.

I get the impression a timber cruiser is most of the time wandering around looking upwards, not caring about what twigs he's cracking underfoot etc.. eyes firmly fixed on trunks and limbs, figuring how solid they are, how many there area.... yeah, I'd sure pick one of them guys to see a BF before he spooked it. Or am I under the wrong impression about how these guys operate?

Love the mask, Thigmo.

I would not use population numbers. The chances of a 16 year old teenage girl who lives for her cell and hanging at the mall and HATES CAMPING DADDY!!!!! has a 0.0% chance of seeing a sasquatch. A seasoned hunter who is in the woods ALL the time and likes to hunt off the beaten path has a MUCH higher chance, as does a person who likes to camp in secluded areas.

I also believe women have a higher chance, I think sasquatches are more prone to be likely to approach, more curious, less likely to hide, if human encountered is female. There's numerous stories of this, including one of my favorite sightings from my island, where a woman camping in the bush alone was able to observe a family of 4 (mum and dad and two wee-uns) come down to the river to drink every morning by her camp. They got used to her and eventually started approaching her more closely before she left. But I think more than that, if it had been a man camping there, they would have smelled him and not approached the river at all.
