Bigfoot's howl? Group tapes creature's cry in U.P.

Frank Donnelly / The Detroit News

MARQUETTE -- Bulletin No. 1: Bigfoot is frolicking in the forest east of this Upper Peninsula community, a California-based group of researchers says.

Bulletin No. 2: The group searching for the legendary mannish ape here this week captured evidence of its existence, they claim.

The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization recorded the creature's trademark howl during an expedition late Thursday night.

Group leader Matt Moneymaker quickly ruled out the possibility that the noise came from a human or another animal. He said it was similar to the sounds made by primates.

"We know it wasn't an owl or coyote," he said.

The group heard the noise in response to a howl by one of the searchers. The group also made other noises, including banging on wood with a stick, to pique the interest of the wooly bully.

The big ape is a big draw.

About 50 people from the Midwest forked over $300 to join the four-day Michigan search that ends Sunday. It was sold out as are similar searches planned for Utah and New Mexico later this summer.

The paying investigators say the fee is small compared to the chance of seeing Bigfoot.

They're among the legion of true-believers whose views are bolstered by a growing number of Internet sites reporting sightings and some prominent academics who won't rule out the possibility that the beast exists.

The Michigan attendees are resolute in their beliefs.

Lack of evidence doesn't stop them. Neither do sketchy claims and confessed hoaxes.

To them, Bigfoot isn't some type of fuzzy-headed myth or scam or case of mistaken identity. It's real.

And that's why they're trampling through dense brush in the rain, wearing camouflage and scent-blocking lotion, swatting away mosquitoes and fright.

How can they know unless they witnessed the animal making the sound?

This might answer your question:

"Lack of evidence doesn't stop them. Neither do sketchy claims and confessed hoaxes."

Yes, sketchy claims and lack of evidence won't stop them.

In other words, they don't know.

An relative abundance of evidence, detailed and precises reports, and impeccable witnesses don't stop the media from insinuating we're all crazy, either.

There are all sorts of sites on the internet with coyote, owl, & other animal vocalizations to listen to. While technically it's true you can't with 100% certainty say a particular sound was made by a Bigfoot without actually seeing the Bigfoot make it, it is pretty easy to find numerous vocalizations online made by animals in the area where you hear something & hopefully rule them all out. If the sound is loud & you can determine for sure that the animal is pretty far away because you have a 360 degree field of view for a significant distance, you can narrow the possibilities to those animals with a significant lung capacity.
I have listened to probably 50 different black bear & 50 different coyote vocalizations & haven't come up with any matches to what I heard here in WV on two different occasions last year.

Deduction only works when the number of possibilities is constrained. We don't know the full range of sounds that some animals can make.

Grand Cherokee and T.Steenburg (sp?) discovered that themselves when they witnessed coyotes making some vocalizations formerly believed to be sasquatch vocalizations.

It looks like the man dropped his entry fee as well, only making a cool 15k on this one.... I don't think they can know for sure what made the sounds, as Jud points out, we just don't know all of the variables involved, and they shouldn't rule out things so quickly. Then again, this expo is garnering national attention, so any vocalization or sketchy encounter he can throw into the mix to spice up the hype is fair game.

I don't think Matt's making anything like $300/head on these anymore.

I hadn't heard about this. Do you have a link to more info on it? All the coyote vocalizations I've been able to find definitely sound canine.

Totally agree, and a bunch of pay to play "researchers" won't do a damned thing to help the image of those trying to investigate this phenomena in a scientific manner.

The whole Michigan project is a hoax. How can anyone even refer to this crap as research is beyond me. This whole new adventure vacation trend just points out a glaring problem in America. We have to many people with to much money, to much idle time, and not enough sense to pour you know what out of the proverbial boot.

It's many things, but research isn't one of them. Whether or not it reveals any flaws in American society is, I suppose, in the eye of the beholder.

Unfortunately, this sort of this is not new.

This group had a mysterious liquid that it's members consumed on "expeditions." Sound familiar?!

I wonder if MM found any "pert'nin' juice" during his recent financial soujourn?
manofthesea
Alot of highly educated, professional people pay to go hiking and see common birds, common shorelife. Why not take a chance to see Bigfoot? There's probably more personal satisfaction being in the forest with some 'professionals' and future friends (and possibly making a HUGE discovery) than there is spending a weekend in Vegas.
