Full Version: WHERE TO SEND A BONE FRAGMENT?

I have a bone fragment that honestly could be from anything. But I'd like to have it looked at if anyone has a suggestion of who to send it to.

Hello wvbig.

Is there any particular reason why this fragment is interesting to you?

Not really. Other than considering the fact that there is no solid evidence of the existence of Bigfoot, I'd hate to discard it without knowing for sure first. But it does have a ridge down the middle, which could be an indication of a gorilla-like skull fragment.

First thing I'd do is post a picture of it and see if any of the resident scientific types recognize it. It could save a lot of resources down the road

I second Drew's advice. If you can do it, post us a picture. There are some pretty sharp zoology types on the BFF who could probably tell you what you have.

I'll try to get some good pics tonight

I'll third that. A couple good pics with some different views and a ruler or something to scale it should be enough unless it truly is just a fragment.

Just curious, where did you find it?

By the local animal shelter in Preston County WV. But on the opposite side of where they bury the animals

Just a fragment might take a closer looks to give a positive ID, are there any good resources to help folks ID remains they find?

Hmmmm. More of a fragment than I'd hoped. It would be helpful it you could label the surfaces (1,2,3,) or edges in the photos to get a better idea of the orientations.

1. It looks like it's been pretty cleanly cut? Which suggests an edible (by humans) animal: farm animal, deer, rabbit....
2. The concave curved section apparent in the first photo- towards the ruler- (which is natural, not cut right?) and overall dish-shape suggests pelvis (my first guess) or maybe jaw, or possibly scapula (shoulder blade). But I'd bet $50 on pelvis.
3. Whatever it is, seems quite SMALL- assuming the curvature is the obturator foramen?
4. If that curve is natural, I can't think of how it could be any skull fragment? but I'm having a little trouble orienting the whole thing.

I can't imagine that it's anything very interesting but a good local high school biology teacher or veterinarian should be able to ID in their hands in about 30 seconds.

I'm happy to keep playing if you can give us some more info on the photo orientations.

Sorry WV, I meant something more like this:

If that's tricky for you, can you explain how the fragment was rotated in each pic? For example, from the first to second pic the bottom edge of the bone was rotated 90 degrees towards the top of the frame. Or the whole thing was completely flipped over (180 degrees) towards left or frame from picture 2 to 3....

#3=Top, #1=Botom, #2=left, #4=Right. I didn't take any pics of width.

Howdy folks...

IMHO...

I'm no authority on bones of any sort, so this is just my opinion...

It looks to me like maybe a portion of a dog skull, the scooped portion in the first pic, to me is a part of the brain pan (I think that is what is called ?), that covers the brain...

As you can see from this dog skull pic it also has a ridge down the center (I know some do some don't)...

Just saying that is what it looks like to me...
Hairy Man
An archaeologist would be helpful to identify this fragment as well.

I guess some animal could've dug into the remains of one of the many dogs buried out back

That's entirely possible...to me it looks like a part of a dogs skull (could be wrong though, it's happened to me before coverlaugh.gif )...

I'd just hate to see you spend good $$$ on something that could be a bone fragment of a known creature (like a dog)...

Perhaps...if you have a university, or collage near you, you could take it to them to have it looked at ( sometimes they will take stuff like this just to test the students )...

Don't know...but it does look like a portion of a dog's skull to me...

Again...JMHO...
Drew
I was thinking part of a pelvis or shoulder of a dog size animal 5-10 lbs. possibly a raccoon, skunk, possum, porky. That size animal

Agreed. A cross section photo of the straight edges should help illustrate whether or not that is the case.
