STRANGE NIGHT SOUNDS
My wife and I recently purchased 16 acres of land in NW Arkansas not far from Eureka Springs. The site is only accessible by dirt roads and is very secluded. The site slopes from about elevation 1200 ft at the base to about elevation 1500 ft near the ridge and it is heavily wooded with small streams, many rock ledges and some large cliff faces. A very beautiful piece of Ozark Mountain Property.
During the late afternoon of August 24 2008, my wife and I visited our newly purchased property and set up camp with the intention of staying there a few nights to explore our land. Setting up camp was uneventful but did would get a whiff of something foul smelling every once in a while and it would soon just disappear. We never located the source of the smell and it only occurred once in a while. We had a camp fire that evening and kept it going until we went to bed for the night. As always, my wife cooked us up a great camp dinner that evening. During this first night of sleep, with the exception of some rustling noises in the woods behind our camp site (which I expected to hear as we ARE out in the woods) and a slight foul smell that quickly disappeared, the night was uneventful.
During the day of August 25, 2008, we explored the 16 acre site for a few hours just to get more familiar with it. We found three prominent ravines, some small streams coming from the various rock faces that ran into the ravines, various rock ridges, and we located a cave that appeared to have some type of wood access ladder inside of it. We knew that a cave existed on the site when we bought it, but it was difficult to find or even see because a lot of debris had piled up in front of it. We know right where it is located now and can find it easily. We also came across a skeleton which looked like the spine and ribs of a small deer. I thought it odd that a small deer traversed this deep into these steeply sloped and rocky woods and even stranger, the skull of this deer was found about 10 or 12 feet away from the spine propped up in the vee of a small tree. We surmised that one of the previous surveyors of the property picked up the deer skull and stuck it in the vee of the tree just for the fun of it. We went into Eureka Springs for a short trip and came back to the camp site that evening. It should be noted that my wife is a sound sleeper and I am a light sleeper. I awake immediately upon hearing noises during the night. During the night of August 25, 2008, I heard some rustling in the woods behind us and later that night I heard a loud crack like something large had stepped on a fallen branch about 30 feet away from the tent, right behind our camp site. I did not wake my wife to tell her what I heard but that kind of freaked me out and I slept the rest of the night with a loaded 45 semi auto in my right hand.
During the day of August 26, 2008, we explored the property again. This time we took a magellan with us with the hopes of plotting the location of the three main ravines, the prominent cliffs and the cave as well as the 4 main corner markers for the property. We documented their coordinates and elevations. The coordinates seemed to make some sense to me but the elevations being reported did not. So much for that idea. We went into town again later in the day and returned to the campsite before night fall. My wife cooked us up another fantastic meal and we went to bed. As I said, my wife is a heavy sleeper and not easily waked but I am a light sleeper. From this point on I decided to keep my gun at my side at night, always. This evening my eyes and mind played some tricks on me. I could see a bright light in the woods not far from our camp - very freaky. All kinds of things ran through my mind at that point, then I finally I determined I was seeing light from the moon breaking through the dense forest and tried to get some sleep. Later that night I woke to some very strange and distinct sounds that I could not identify. There were two sources, one very near us (from the direction of the cave) and one about ¼ of a mile away. The distance source would make this 4 or 5 time repeating wooping sound that got to a higher pitch with each woop then ended with a single high pitched scream-like woop, then the closer source would repeat exactly the same but higher pitched with more emphasis on each of the woops, especially the last one. This volley of calls happened about 6 times. I just stayed in the tent awake with my 45 in hand. Then about an hour later something came close to the tent, about 2 feet from my head and growled, huffed and sniffed for a few moments, then went away. I told my wife about the previous nights events and we agreed that if something like that occurred again the next night I would wake her so that she could hear it too. I finally got a couple of hours sleep later that night.
During the day of August 27, 2008, we explored the property again. This time we took the camera with us and took snaps shots of all of the interesting features of the site. Later that day we went into town again and later that evening we returned to the camp for another great dinner. This evening got very strange. My wife was sound asleep as always and I was awakened by the sound of something hitting the tent. I figured it was a branch or acorn falling from the trees above us, but it did make enough of a noise to startle and wake me. Then a few minutes later I heard something either touch or run up the side of the tent, then run across the top of the tent and suddenly stop. That was a bit freaky too. I had no idea what would have done that. I couldn't see anything in the way of shadows on the tent itself. I sat there awake for a while then the wooping started up again. As with the night before, there were two sources. One was fairly close to the camp site and one was probably as much as a ½ mile away this time - fainter than the night before but still quite easy to hear. The sounds of the previous night were repeated about 7 or 8 times. I woke my wife so she could hear them too. There were a series of woops that ended on a high note and as before, the closer call was always at a higher pitch and more intense than the one that was farther away. After about 7 series of this call and response effort, the closer whooper broke down into a very strange mix of screams, grunts & groans on the 8th response - the very last part of it almost sounded like something was angry and swearing in a strange language. Then it just stopped. My wife heard the last four of the series and couldn't think of what it could be either. It did not sound like a bird or coyote - it did sound very primate to me. Needless to say I did not sleep very well for the rest of the night.
Things to note:
1. During our whole stay our cheapo white styrofoam cooler of food was never disturbed - not at night and not even during the day when we were exploring the site or in town.
2. The whole time we stayed there and visited our land we expected to at least see a few small animals - a raccoon, a skunk, a snake, a squirrel, anything but strangely we did not see any live small animals on our whole 16 acre site day or night. I even peered around the property with a flashlight at night trying to find a pair of small eyes or two staring back at me, but I saw nothing.
3. During the night of August 26 we accidentally left about a pound of camp fire cooked salmon (in a zipped plastic bag) sitting on top of the cooler all night and it was still there, undisturbed in the morning. One would think that a raccoon or something would have smelled that and had a great meal that night, but it didn't happen.
4. As soon as I got to a computer I started researching and listening to the sounds of primates. I determined that the wooping sounds I heard were much like that of a chimpanzee and the growling and huffing sounds I heard one night were much like that of a gorilla.
5. I then came across this sound bite which is supposedly a recording from a bigfoot encounter in California in the 70's... We heard no knocking sounds but the whoops are very similar except that ours would get higher pitched with each woop.
http://www.bfro.net/avevid/sierrasounds/Whoop.mp3 I really have to wonder - Could a bigfoot be living on our land or possibly even be living in our cave?
