I just ran across a pretty interesting encounter in a thread on MLP. Has anyone else seen this?

Sussex County has lots of old farms, lots of forest, lots of bears, an insane amount of really tame deer, and not that many people (by NJ standards). Habitat-wise, this would not be too far-fetched (I say for folks from part so the world that cannot imagine a "wild" New Jersey).
Main options:
1 - saw a bear
2 - was punk'd (or unwitting victim of someone else's)
3 - hallucinated it (whether alcohol induced or not)
4 - saw a sasquatch
5 - is full of sh*t
Probabilities:
1 - low, early Feb means that most bears are snoozing away
2 - low, eyeshine would seem to indicate a really elaborate hoax
3 - low, both witnesses saw same thing (allegedly)
4 & 5 - the safe and easy thing would be to proclaim 4 unlikely and 5 highly likely. But, one really can't tell. This is another classic anecdotal report that is either really exciting or a load of hooey. But the report has one really great thing going for it: it's FRESH!
If the witness can pinpoint the location of a sasquatch from FEBRUARY 4th, then this offers some hope to find the booger, right? Let's say SAssy can cover 20 miles in night. We might then predict that this creature is right now within 60 miles of the encounter location. Mobile sasquatch team? It's time to get to work!

The new jersey pinelands is the largest undeveloped tract of land on the eastern seaboard. believe it or not there a number of ghost towns located out there. there is enough room for bigfoot to roam and the new york mob to use it as a cemetery without bumping into each other.

I know there have been several famous sightings in that area dating back to the 70's.. thats why this report is of interst to me. I grew up near the area and actaully find it quite plausible...especially since I had a vocal event near that area about 15 years ago.

I firmly believe there is something worth investigating in the pine barrens area of NJ. Too many good reports from very reputable witnesses over the years to dismiss as mistaken identity.
Just my untrained opinion.

yes, thank you. I have seen that site before, and it where I found that info about 3 years ago I would guess.
I was hoping to find supporting info regarding the three cases I cut and pasted.
I put an email into that site, but..............................
I'm going to try to look up newspapers from that time in this area and see if I can get more information. I would assume the reports were in the papers??
I did find someone had these reports in a book or something, but they were all contained on the same page, so I doubt anymore info is in there than what is already posted.
This is something I have wanted to do for about the last 10 years. I have been back to the area plenty of times, riding and such. My parents still live in the same house, so it is very easy and accesible. But I have never been back on foot(always on atv or dirt bike) with the purpose of looking. Now it is time.
It is so weird to see something like that, and basically not tell anyone. It took me years to tell one person. I'd say it took me a good six months to go back and ride in those woods, and I wouldnt go back in alone for longer than that.
At this time, only two adults know my story, and my two kids who overheard me speaking with my wife...........i dont like speaking about it much, since most people tend to think your crazy when this type of stuff comes up.
My experience, quickly, not reported as of yet.
Background.I grew up playing in these woods, playing tag/manhunt with all of my childhood friends, riding bmx bikes first on the trails, then progressing to atv/dirtbiking. Also have hunted and walked the woods with my father in the same woods for years. I know the woods almost as good as the streets of my town I grew up in. Miles and miles and miles of terrain around. We would explore for hours, and it was truly amazing what we did and covered at such a young age! From this area, you can easily go forever with no one seeing you, can get to PA, NY, etc, easily, with no roads.
Anyway, up until my sighting, NOTHING ever happened, or was seen, or anything. No folk lore of any stories, camp fire tales, nothing. Which I now find weird since sigthings occured in the mid 70's, and most of the kids I hung out with had older brothers or sisters, so you would think these stories would have been heard and funneled down, but no.............
So 14-15yrs old, come home from school and go ride alone since no one else was around for some reason. EVERY time I go ride behind my parents house, being when I was 10, or now at 32, I take the same way in, and do a warm up loop before I venture out into the nothingness. I do this alone, or with a group, and it is basically my routine to make sure everything is ok with the machine I am on, and to loosen up some. I also do it because thats what we did when we were real young, ride the trails close to the houses on bikes, and it was just habit. Its near houses, and my house, so if anything goes wrong its an easy walk out.
So I leave my house, through the backyard and go the couple of hundred yards up to the trails where they start. Get up there, and started to take the same route that I spoke about above. I'm going slow, just got out, its close to houses, etc, and I swear I see something moving a little ahead of me, and to the right, almost parallel. But, its hard to tell, since I am moving, so many trees, etc. I estimate it was about 25 yrds off the trail. No leaves on the trees, everything is bare at this point. I still am moving slowly, in first gear will never forget it, and am looking over to where I see movement trying to figure out what is going on. I remember being extremley scared at this point because I started to understand something was not right. I come to a stop, engine still running, and since I am no longer moving now, it was so easy to see. Plain as day, there it was, walking methodically like I was not even there. It was huge, at least 8 to 8.5 feet, darkish brown. I was so damn scared, I turned around on the trail while still watching it. It wasnt until then it turned to look at me, it was like it didnt care about me when I was on the 3 wheeler, but when I got off to do a K turn(no reverse) it stoped, turned its upper body, and looked right at me. I froze for a second in total fear, then hopped on the 3 wheeler. As soon as I was set on the 3wheeler again, it turned around and started its methodical walk in the same direction it was going.
I never left the woods so damn fast before in my life. Heart pounding, scared as hell. When I got home I left the 3 wheeler out, and just went into my room and stared out the window into the woods until dark looking for it thinking it may have followed me home(not far at all).
Before this event, nothing. After this event, nothing in terms of sightings. The only other thing that I can report that happened to me in the same area, about 1/4 mile away near a swamp we cross to get out to some real riding is coming across the smell. One of my buddies sunk his bike in the water/swap. It took about 2 hrs to get it going again. During that time(and the people I was with have no knowledge of my past encounter) the guys I was with kept asking if I smelled that bad smell every once in a while. I did not(bad nose, ha, I cant smell nothing) but felt uneasy the entire time. I knew, and was looking, but couldnt see it. I couldnt wait to get that bike going again, and get out.
I need to go back now, I can just feel it.
Weird thing, my Dad has never seen anything unusual back there. I have never asked him directly, or told him what I just typed, but have asked in a round about way. Nothing. I think its due to him going back mainly during hunting season, carrying a gun, etc, etc.
I want to say from my expierience that BF is smart enough to realize that when your moving on an atv, your not a threat and probally arent going to see him, which is why he made no attempt to hide or flea. As soon as I stepped off, I mean as soon as my feet hit the ground, it somehow knew and turned to check me out. Its like it had eyes in back of its head or something.
I guess that wasnt so short.............

Good post njcruiser,
I'm in Ocean County, and I'm on the look out for as much new jersey info as possible. It's tough to come by.
Sorry I can't add any info for you, the link that slewfoot posted is about all I'm aware of myself.
The sightings that you'd posted were all new to me, including your own. I hope to hear more.
Good luck!
I can relate to your sentiment of keeping things to yourself, I think a lot of witnesses keep their experiences to themselves. It's understandable. I'm sure that most witnesses don't know where to report an encounter at all. News reports are few and far between, I'm sure the police hear most of these eyewitness accounts first. They are probably the most factually detailed and impartial as far as date and time, witness names, etc. but theres no real way to access that info.

Thanks everyone. I found a thread in here containing a ton of old newspaper articles, and found an article about another sighting in the area(dover, not far, and in 1894 not populated in between my sighting area and this article) but not the white meadow lake articles as of yet.

Came home last night to drop my kids off......they have an event they need to attend with my wife tomorrow......I'll be heading back down tonight and they'll meet up with me Saturday night.....
Seen plenty of rain this week...it rained pretty much non-stop since Sunday morning to yesterday (Thursday) morning.....
Nothing real crazy has taken place so far......I wanted to cover some trails with my kids to look for sign but the rain has been too steady and unpredictable (sudden down poors) to have them too far from camp for very long (one is just a toddler).....I covered a few forest roads with the truck and saw plenty a deer and a few turkey...the normal stuff......
I'm working on a full report.....I'll post it once I'm back next week.......

Aug 28 2007, 07:56 AM
Came home a little early...there was nothing happening....between the rain and then the humidity I figured I'd get the kids home to make it to soccer practice.....man summer went quick......
I'm not gonna bother posting any long winded report because nothing conclusive took place.......
I set up some raked out and baited areas.....resulted in normal tracks of local animals......
Raked out around our trailer (once the rain stopped) hoping for an overnight peek in a window.....resulted in no unusual tracks.......
One night I heard what sounded like a pack of coyotes but it was brief and didn't hear it again that night or the following nights....I didn't see any tracks that would indicate their presence but a lot of that sand is hard pack with a light dusting.....tracks of their type wouldn't stay around long.......
I did find four very old possible impressions, one of which I photographed......but they were so old all I would/could call them are 'interesting looking shapes'......
Till next time.....

How about posting a short winded report

A lot of us, specially me on the west coast, are not familier with N. J. Back ground of what the area is like (topography, road access, water, vegitation, food supply, mafia graveyards, ect.) would be of help for some of us to get a grasp on the region. And not only Dennis, but an overview by others in the state would be appreciated.

Mafia Graveyards.....LOL......that is probably my favorite episode......but you're right, I'd bet there are more than a few down there......
If you look at a map of NJ look in the southern half and you'll see an area marked 'Pine Barrens'.....there are a few state forests and adjoining land that is pretty undeveloped though that is changing in recent years.......it is comprised of cedar swamp and pine forests, loads of forest roads and trails.....the state park camping is used very little esp during the week......I had one park to myself for 5 of the days I was there recently.....
Wild blueberries abound.....and the area is loaded with cranberry bogs....I think NJ is ranked three in the country for cranberries, I believe it was number one in the 1800s......
Deer are very plentiful as is fresh water......I think there are big cats in the area as well....I found a track following a young deer that looked to be from a large cat......I've also heard a few reports of them, some recent (a PD was looking for one down there somewhere about a year ago I think it was).......
The legend of the NJ Devil is from that area of the state.....
I'm writing this on the fly with my kids climbing on me so I'm sure I'm leaving some stuff out......
I live in the North part of the State near NY State....there have been reports from up here, some very close to my home.....about 20 years ago I had a lengthy encounter with what I'm sure was a Sasquatch......
I'm going to try to figure out how post one of the impressions/(shape in the sand) I found down there last week......just for conversations sake.....like I said it's too old to really be considered more than that.......
Trying to attach it but it doesn't seem to be working

What was the nature of that "lengthy encounter" 20 years ago?
Dad
Aug 29 2007, 11:11 AM
By lengthy I mean over an hr.....not days like it may have sounded....sorry if anyone misunderstood that.......
It was a chance encounter.....three of us stopped on a country road to relieve ourselves.....as I was doing my thing I heard what I've thought (until recently) was chest beating with-in a few yards of me......at this point in my life I feel it may have been infrasound.....because though it started in front of me the sound basically surrounded me and I could feel it very powerfully....looking back I feel that I may have felt it more than heard it, it was so strong a feeling........
The three of us heard it and didn't know what it was....we left and returned with another friend.......we heard it again but further away this time.....
We split up in groups of two and the animal approached a friend and I....it bluff charged us and then crossed the road....it was very clear that it was very large, on two feet, and could move very quickly......
We heard it cross the road on two heavy soft feet and then it screamed at us.......
We left immediately, and have to say that we were all very sure it was time to leave.......
This occurred under what I believe was a new moon period because it was pitch dark and we never actually saw the animal....but I have no doubts as to what it was......
I did report this to the BFRO a few years ago.....I asked them not to make it public because up until two years ago I was a police officer and I felt the area had enough exposure to the general public as it was.....

Dad,I was impressed by your photo, the one you provided in the post, the fading print and the ruler next to it.In alot of pics, people say they see stuff, and if you stare at it for an hour, you never see ANYTHING! In your photo,I CLEARLY see a FOOTPRING,human or human-like,5 toes and the outside arch curves. The question is,Was it from someone swimming in one of the creeks,or having a picnic, etc? The track does look not too fresh so its hard to say,but I am still impressed that you found that track. Also, where again, aprox, were you at? I am pretty sure that there is another Youtube video of that 'creature' somewhere, I saw it about a year ago. I chalked it up as a fake on account of it's unsteadiness ... if it can't walk straight, how can it chase down prey? The feet and arms seem to be on stilts inside a costume for it to balance itself like that.
Just my two cents.
