Full Version: Broken Aspen

I just thought of something while sitting here, dreading to go to bed because of restless leg syndrome.

Two weeks ago, while hiking through Teton Canyon (that trip when I wacthed all the people go by), along the trail, there was an Aspen, probably 3-4 inches in diameter that was snapped off at about the six foot and a half foot mark.

I looked at it and told my kid the "Wind did that". But, I don't know. I won't say it was "The Big Guy", because I don't know that, and there was no evidnece to suggest that, but it wasn't a bear because there were no claw marks. This thing was just broken off, but nothing around it was disturbed.

I have read where the Sasquatch will snap off trees to possibly mark territory, or whatever theories go along that vein.

What the heck! Who knows what did it? Maybe I need to head up again and just sit.

I need to start packing that bear spray.

You know, up here (and especially at our cabin which is even further up than here) we see trees broken the way you describe all the time. I've seen tree formations ten feet off I35 that look to all the world like several photos I've seen on other sites purported to be sasquacth-related. I'm not saying they don't use trees to communicate something (territory, whatever) but sometimes trees just break.

You guys oughta take a peek at Dr. John Bindernagel's website. He is into that. Seems to me there must be quite an overlap between what the big guys do and what nature does. I know there a lot of people who get a little carried away with it. (a little ?? icon_eek.gif icon_eek.gif icon_bang.gif )

I could swear I've heard that before. laugh.gif

I dont know what to think about tree-breaks. Sometimes I think yes and sometimes it's like dry.gif . Mother Nature is something else and I've seen some strange things happen due to weather. But then again there are some things that just seem weird. Once, while hunting, I noticed a huge log wedged into two trees. While sitting there, trying to be quiet and still, I started noticing this log more and more and noticed that it was just kinda unusual. One end was wedged about 15 ft. up in between two white birch trees. The unusual thing was that the end 15ft up in the trees was the bottom of the tree. That got me to wondering how it got there. I thought tornado or something at first. This was a huge log. So I looked at the surrounding trees and saw the stump from the log not far away. The rest of the trees around were in good shape though so I dont know how a tornado would have done it. I remember thinking that someone would have had to have put that there but the question was why? and how? It would have taken at least 10 men to put it there (fuzzy estimation). And why would they do it? It had no apparent use. This was something that stumped me way before I knew about BF. Actually I cant say that I have read any reports to substantiate a log wedged in a tree.

Anyway, I stayed on that thought too long. icon_redface.gif I also once tried following tree snaps (still do icon_mrgreen.gif ). I would hike in the direction that they were broken. Funny thing is that I would come upon other broken trees and then I would follow their direction. They stayed in pretty much a straight line. At some points it looked like a well-used trail but not that noticable. We even found what looked like BF prints. Some of them were very distinct. I had my brother along (He's not a believer in BF) and he was like "Wow! that looks just like a huge bare-foot print." He put his boot in one and there was still like 3 in. to go to the end of the toes. Not sure of the size of his boot (he's 6' 4" tall) but I remember us calculating it up to be about 22" long. It was huge, with 5 toes. So anyway, I found these prints and a few more questionable prints, invariably, while following tree snaps. So I dont know. Maybe there is something to the theory. ohmy.gif wink.gif ph34r.gif

I had his book. And then I loaned it to someone. I've never seen the book since. Thief!

Angie. Ditto on the tree breaks. In A PA ridge where there has been a history of sightings and big prints found (just last winter). We have found long rows of saplings that were all bent ,(Not broken) to the ground. They were all bent in the same direction. With no disruption to other trees in that area. Mother nature dosen't work like that.
Prints have been found all over this general area. ph34r.gif

There really must be a link to these tree bends and breaks.

Well, I think she does at least part of the time. I've seen very much the same thing on the (very) long drive up north. Lines of young birch and aspen bent to the ground while the trees behind them and even sometimes next to them still standing straight. Typically these bent trees are at the edge of a stand (again, ten or twenty feet off the highway). I've always assumed this is due to wind.

Like I said, I'm not discounting tree breaks at all. There may very well be something to it. I'm just suggesting we use a very critical eye when judging this type of phenomenon.

i have seen teepee formations, bows, limb breaks on very healthy trees where only one limb was snaped and the others were normal, then i have seen where a whole line of young pine trees were snapped and twisted at the tops of them, and have seen X formations, i did mark my spot near some of the X's and some of them were tore up the following day, and i never found any good tracks around any of them, but did find impressions on the ground that could of been a foot. but i have also seen what 4ft of heavy wet snow can do to an area, a wind storm, tornado, and an ice storm can do. so all i can say is just pay close attention, look for hair, tracks etc, before you say that bigfoot done it.
