Asked and answered

QUESTION: Have there been Bigfoot sightings in Michigan?

ANSWER: Sure. The big, hirsute creature has been reported in many Michigan counties, though not in Wayne, Oakland or Macomb -- and none yet scientifically verified.

The Michigan Sasquatch Studies Group logs sightings on its Web site, www.michiganbigfoot.org.

The Bigfoot Research Organization, or BFRO, is planning a July 12-15 field trip in the Upper Peninsula for $300 a person. Participants must provide transportation, food and camping gear. As stated on www.bfro.net, the trip's goals are to observe Bigfoot, obtain evidence such as photos or recordings, teach people how to look for Bigfoot, and test methods for attracting a creature.

The BFRO site reports 66 Michigan sightings, the most recent in Hillsdale County last April.

The name Sasquatch is traced to a British Columbia teacher in the 1920s and was derived from similar-sounding native Canadian words.

Bigfoot or Sasquatch has been reported in remote areas across the United States and Canada. Other countries with mountains talk of Bigfoot-like creatures such as the Himalayan Yeti or the Abominable Snowman.
