'Sasquatch' to make local appearance
By Tom Mitchell, LEADER TIMES, Friday, November 10, 2006
NORTH BUFFALO -- Watch out, sasquatch is in the area. The question for some area archers is: Will they get him before he gets them?
In this case, sasquatch is the harmless invention of local archer of Frank Long, director of the Armstrong County Hunting and Fishing Club's 2-D archery range. Long thought it would be a novel idea to hold a "night shoot" on the 2-D range. So between 6 and 8 p.m. Nov. 18, archers will work in teams to try their night skills shooting a variety of "critters" including skunks, raccoons, a timber wolf, and, of course, the dreaded sasquatch.
Long said the targets, 14 in all, will have reflective eyes, so that when an archery team member shines a flashlight on the targets the eyes will be illuminated. Sasquatch, however, will have glowstick light eyes that will be "watching" all through the night. All targets are housed in small shelters backed with compressed hay bales. In addition to their archery equipment, archers must take a flashlight. Archers will shoot two arrows at each target for a total of 28 shots.
The sasquatch, by the way, may prove to be the easiest target as it stands a bit more than 6 feet tall. Archers may sign up as a team or may be assigned a team member at signup.
Long said 2-D archery target shooting was popular in the 1960s and early 1970s until the advent of 3-D targets. 2-D targets are depictions of animals and also bull's-eye printed paper targets. Long is trying to rekindle interest in 2-D shooting.
He and several fellow archers have created a 2-D walk-through course at the Armstrong County Hunting and Fishing Club and the club holds events on a regular basis. The club also offers an indoor archery practice range.
For more information, call Long at 724-548-8318; Sean Walker at 724-548-4588; or Bill Turberville at 724-543-1504.
