I've never understood why this is supposed to be such complex behavior. Like you, I've seen many animals do this as well.

Peter Byrne told me about a two-person sighting near Estacada, Oregon, he investigated where the Sasquatch crossing he road stopped and turned, gesturing as though to others to stay back.

I've seen a buck apparently send three doe out first before he made the trek. ("Discretion is the better part of valor.")

I think the chimp organization is very interesting, and may help answer questions like, "Why is there no road kill?"
