Cold feet over hunt for Bigfoot

By MEERA VIJAYAN

JOHOR BARU: With all the hype about Bigfoot, one would have thought that the Forestry Department would be swarmed with people wanting to track down the mystical creature.

The department even printed 500 forms for people to apply to enter the forest in search of Bigfoot.

But there are no takers.

“We thought that with all the interest in Bigfoot, we would have a lot of enquiries from the public. However, this is not the case,” State Forestry Department director Che Hashim Hassan said.

“At any time, we have 25 rangers patrolling the area in Kahang, even at night,” he said.

“They have neither spotted Bigfoot nor trespassers.”

The department has not organised tours to take adventure seekers into the forest with the hope of seeing Bigfoot.

“We have not seen compelling evidence on the existence of Bigfoot. I don’t think we will be organising such tours,” Che Hashim added.

He also said that those interested in entering the state's permanent forest reserves totalling 368,821ha would have to apply for a permit at the cost of RM150 per entry.

The applicant is allowed to bring as many people into the forest as long as the names of those entering as well as their IC numbers are submitted at the time of application.

Bigfoot stories began appearing in the media in December and several expeditions had been organised since.

People claimed to have heard distinctive howling emanating from the jungle in the wee hours of the morning and to have seen the creature’s footprints.

Che Hashim showing the forest entry permit form, 500 of which have been printed. Despite all the excitement about Bigfoot, no one has approached the Forestry Department for the form. Asked if it was possible that people were entering the forests illegally, Che Hashim said his forest rangers had not seen anyone.

More and more of these articles seem to show the press really doesn't know what they're reporting about- (no surprise) yet they know exactly what they want to hear. They expect there is no evidence, they want to believe everyone on the planet is there looking for the thing, and they seem determined to push the tourism angle. None of which appears to be true.
Not to mention the line "Bigfoot stories began appearing in the media in December..."

I'm not sick of reading about the Malaysian expedition, just sick of seeing how it's handled. Other than that, tugboatwa, you're doing a heck of a job- this is my favorite corner of the forums!

Malaysia promotes Bigfoot hunt

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - Apparently, nobody wants to meet Bigfoot.

The Malaysian Forestry Department says there are no takers for permits on offer to explore a protected forest for the mythical creature, despite initial excitement over reported sightings of the beast, The Star newspaper reported Wednesday.

Authorities printed 500 application forms anticipating a rush, but none has been filled, Che Hashim Hassan, the department's director in the southern state of Johor, was quoted as saying.

The Malaysian media has been gripped by Bigfoot fever since November 2005, when fish farm workers reported seeing three giant human-like creatures in the Endau Rompin park in Johor. They also claimed to have seen a gigantic footprint.

Park officials combed the site but found no physical evidence of a Bigfoot. However, they recorded more reports of sightings from aboriginal villagers who live on the park's fringes.

"We thought that with all the interest in Bigfoot, we would have a lot of inquiries from the public," Che Hashim said. "However, this is not the case."

He said forest rangers patrolled the jungle boundaries at night, but have not heard or seen any evidence of the purported gigantic beast, and did not plan to capitalize on the craze by organizing forest tours for adventure seekers.

Officials weren't immediately available for further details.

Johor state officials said in January that they planned to send a team of scientists and researchers alongside a routine scientific expedition into the forest park to track the creature down. Officials did not reveal a date for the expedition.

"Bigfoot" is a popular name given in the United States to giant hairy creatures walking on two legs. Sightings of such beasts have been reported in many parts of the world but their existence has never been proven.

Tourism officials said they planned to use the interest in Bigfoot to draw tourists to Malaysia. Wildlife rangers said they may set up camera traps in the jungle to capture images of the creature.

Once again, here is "evidence" that, despite the popularity of the issue, virtually nobody is out there looking for these creatures, most notably, representatives from the scientific/academic industries.

Encounters are rare, chance events, and usually with locals who are out in the woods doing their everyday things.

Of course, the "skeptics" will deny that.

What is it that makes this story so very interesting?... this story has been picked up by ABC News, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, and Forbes Magazine.

I guess the reason this is getting so much press is, most folks(media) probably figger that if they're out there...somewhere... what more likely place would they be but the remote jungles of Fum Bukt, Indonesia!

I'd LOVE to go, but I'm afraid all those miles would have to be covered on someone else's dollar !
Where's our new "Tom Slick" when we need him ? :new_thumbsupsmileyanim:

I hope for something REAL to come from this one....even if it's just a few good pix.....

We could ALL use something NEW & SIGNIFICANT to chew on, right about now !!!

I know most folks are tired of beating the same ol' dead horses :anim_horse: 'round here, all the time....
day in & day out!

Makes you wonder how many news outlets would run a story with relevant, detailed information!
How long have these permits been available? That may be important in these articles... Are there any people looking who didn't fill out the paperwork? What about those 25 rangers mentioned, or even that SciFi channel team that didn't have permission?
That last line: "Tourism officials said they planned to use the interest in Bigfoot to draw tourists to Malaysia" really gets me- that's not at all what some of the other latest reports seem to indicate.

I suspect that the jungles of Malaysia are not that differant that here in the State of Washington. Few towns and villages right in the center of the search area. Most towns on the edges of the jungle. So people do not go deep into the jungle. Lumbermen would be the most likely be the ones with knowledge of the area. But there could be the same lumber issues as we could have here. If a game preserve you would not have hunters exploring the preserve. We have 6 million people in the State. And maybe 200,000 of them are compleatly woods savvy. (I'm not talking about those who just go hunting once or twice a year) But the people who could go out and survive there. People who know the animals in the area. So I see the problems we have here the same as you might find in Malaysia. Also if the people around the Malaysian jungle are poor subsistence farmers, they do not have the time to do a lot of exploring.

I haven't heard anything about the game plan. If this creature is out there, it shouldn't be killed...
