Johor bans foreign ape man hunt

By Jonathan Kent - BBC correspondent in Kuala Lumpur

The southern Malaysian state of Johor has threatened to jail foreigners who venture into its jungles looking for a legendary ape man, dubbed 'Big Foot'.

The state's Forestry Department says Big Foot enthusiasts found on its land without a permit will face up to three years jail or a fine of up to $2,500.

The hunt for Big Foot has gripped Malaysia after a spate of sightings.

Now authorities are determined that if the ape man exists, Malaysians will be the first to find him.

Malaysians are being invited to pay just over $1 for a permit to roam around Johor state's forest reserves, where most of the reported sightings have taken place.

The state also plans to sponsor a scientific expedition, and although Malaysia has few primate specialists, foreigners will again not be invited.

Local tourism industry leaders told the BBC the ban on non-Malaysians entering forest reserves was daft and should be rethought.

The country hopes to lure 20 million foreign visitors next year and its main attractions are its beaches and its jungles.

Tourism bosses say the move will simply confuse and possibly drive away just the people they want to attract.

Foreign bans!? Threats of jail time!? $2, 500 fines!?
Oh come on, this whole 'bigfoot fever' thing is obviously a ploy to attract tourism. They probably just got exited over seeing 'King Kong'

Seriously though, perhaps discouraging foreign influence from experts and specialists isn't such a good idea... if they ever actually find anything, they'll probably reconsider.

Well, I guess that puts the kibash on the theory that this is all an elaborate hoax intended to increase tourism.

Am I to understand that the "definitive" proof promised by the Malaysian govt. was that plaster footprint cast?

In Singapore, you're forbidden to chew gum. In Malaysia, you're forbidden to look for bigfoot.

Sure, these countries' crime-rates are low, but at what cost???

This just gets weirder and weirder.I hope they find the damn thing.I just hope after they find it they don't stick it a sweatshop making clothes for Walmart

... making Bigfoot t-shirts?

Yawn, indeed... :new_tiredsmiley:

I'm thinking what they're doing isn't such a bad idea. In fact, I think it's a good idea. So what's the worst that can happen? They find nothing? So what's the next worse thing that can happen? Someone finds something, but don't document it? But it will be a news story, and it will instigate a real scientific investigation if anything is found. (Bear with me here... I'm an optimist!!).

If it appears that there is really something to the reports coming out of there, sooner than later the government will either allow or sponsor a genuine scientific expidition to uncover whats really there. I think that's a good thing. I'm telling you now, don't bring up that drivel about dumb natives going out & ruining evidence anyone could have used about bigfoot. That's crap. I don't care whether they know how to cast a footprint or not. Or if they even include a way to measure it in a photo. Those dumb natives are wise in ways we'll never know.

The government's response is wise. It certainly keeps a lot of bigfoot nuts away from the area, and that includes all the people we collectively love to hate. You know, the ones we really don't respect. This also gives the government the time to check out the primatologists & bigfoot research groups from all over the world, just in case actually someone finds something.

What's the big deal? Some of us has been waiting for 50 years for confirmation of the existence of bigfoot. What's another year or two?

Soooooo, my stance on this matter is this. Great decision on the government's part. It really uncomplicates the entire issue. To invite foreign investigators in at this point could get really out of control really fast. If evidence is found, we'll know about it. Their attitude will discourage the true nuts from trying to flash & dash their way in. The government will get real scientists to research the whole thing.

This isn't the "Great American Gold Rush". It seems to be a wise move, to me. That's my opinion, at least for now. That's subject to change if the situation changes, but probably not til then. That's what makes sense to me.

After giving it some thought, I gotta agree with Littlefoot, although I am very much for government NOT meddling into most things.

In the short term, they'll lose tourism $$$, but think of this...what if they actually FIND one or more of these buggers and can prove it! The potential for bringing in tourists wanting too see these creatures would be wayyyy more than what they could bring in for wannabee discoverers during this likely-to-be-short-term spike in sightings.

Hey, I chewed gum in Singapore and nobody stopped me. You will be fined if you DUMP the gum on the street though after you've finished with it. Quite right too.

It should be noted that the cast shown over the past week was made by a Singapore paranormal group and not by the Malaysia Government sponsored researchers.
As I understand, one reason for the foreign researcher ban is that this group from Singapore was asked not to do a field trip, but did so anyhow.
Interesting tourists are being kept out of the area. Is it zenophobia by the Malaysian government. Or could the government knows more than has been released. Go to popcorn.com to order an extra big bag of popcorn - this could be around for a while. :popcorn2:

Less than 4 hours from your cave. Can you keep it warm that long?

I'll just wait, watch, see what develops. No matter what, it'll be interesting. Even more interesting will be the repercussions 'round the world if they really do find something. It could open up whole new avenues of research in other places.

Um, why should I do that exactly? It either will be or won't be, regardless of how I 'treat' it. I really don't get your point, but maybe it's me.
TimMcmanus
I agree with you, Carpet. Treating each one as though it were the "big one," especially in this field, is a down-payment on big-time disappointment.
