TESLIN, Yukon, July 26 (UPI) -- Scientists expect DNA test results this week from a tuft of hair that residents of Teslin, Yukon Territory, Canada, say came from a sasquatch, or Bigfoot.

University of Alberta geneticists are conducting the tests on the hair, which witnesses say came from the mysterious creature earlier this month.

Some Teslin residents say they saw a tall, ape-like animal lope past a house in the middle of the night earlier this month, leaving behind large footprints and the clump of hair.

Geneticist David Coltman told the BBC his team would run DNA tests on the sample and compare the results to DNA of large animals that are well-known in the Teslin area, such as bears and bison.

Coltman said the fur is almost certainly from a well-known mammal, but he admits it is possible it will not match any known species. That, he told the BBC, would be scientifically interesting and that chance is worth running these tests.

Stories of a giant ape-like animal roaming the western forests of North America date to before Europeans settled in Canada. But there has never been proof of the sasquatch's existence.

I think those turned out to be bison hairs.

If I had a hair sample though, I'd say I found 3 possibles, and send in the big guy sample, some hair pulled out my arm and some from my cat, and if they all came back bison, then i'd call shens biggrin.gif

That story always bugged me.. The folks who supposedly gathered it were pushing for it to be tested -- alright, though it was clear from the circumstances that they didn't know it came from the sasquatch they had supposedly seen.

But how many times have you seen a scientist immediately jump into the action, even declaring "the off chance it's an unknown makes it scientifically interesting"?

That's not what we usually see, is it? We can get some hairs tested, but unless it's Henner Farhenbach, the scientist wants no part of publicity. Yet here we get a very public "me! me! ohhh pick me!" from a scientist. Would this guy take further evidence for testing? I'll bet not.

And I'll bet the whole thing was some kind of setup. Why anyone would think it necessary, I do not know, but it smells fishy.

Here's the scientific pub proving that the hair was indeed from a buffalo.

Sasquatch-Buffalo hair DNA paper

Note to anti-science folks: This is at least the second peer-reviewed scientific publication of analysis of supposed sasquatch or yeti hair that has found it to be from an ungulate. Further proof that scientists ARE cooperating and lending a hand in the search, albeit with only negative results...so far.

I for one would much prefer an accurate but negative report from someone who really knows what they are doing, than an open, inconclusive report from someone who claimed to know what they were doing.
