Hello all, yesterday we went on a trip dpwn to SW WA just south of silverstar mt. we tried to get onto the Mt but due to a snow storm last week we were unable to actually get to far up there. Nighthunter and I linked up with another person who was familiar with the area and he led us around to where he had his encounters. The terrain is typical WA forest, large trees lots of undergrowth, so forth. only things of note is lots of active logging going on in the area, so much that some previous sightings up there have been clear cut away now. (BTW has anyone seen how fast they actually cut down the trees now? it was amazing watching it first hand) anyway it was just a shirt day trip due to the weather. but we did find some trees twisted up and got some god pics of it. This one is the best the breanch is over a inch in diameter and about 6' off the ground, we found 3 in total all within 10 feet of each other none were on the trail its self but were easily seen just off of it. we tried doing the same thing our self but none of us were able to replicate what we found. Nighthunter is stronger than the average dwarft but even he had o luck. Before leaving we put up a camera trap with some bait to see if we have any luck.

Cool pics, you guys. Just curious, what other known causes beside a BF would or could facilitate twists like that ? Baffles me, I have no idea. BTW, Nighthunter, whats that in the front pouch of your Pullover...C4? AMH14 grenades?

We were thinking that possible it is used as a marking system to either show they are in an area or which way to take down a trail or maybe they are just board waiting for something. and in Nighthunters front pocket was out cam corder he had out to record what we found. also the highlights in the back were just a tree that fell over from a storm the week before, there were tons of stuff like that and the other highlight was looked at and was nothing.

Ok, first off to bill, we looked around and found some possible prints but the ground was too hard for anything definite, as for nests there was an area of some ferns beat down and in this area is where we placed a camera trap to see if anything returns, also around this area there was no deer sign or anything else like that.
Second, what is with the red circles all over the pics, i can go into paint and do that to, we were on the ground and we looked around, there is a stump that is coverd with some ferns and some trees and branchs fallen over from a storm the wek before.Humm... new thread idea forming....

Callidus, I have an answer:
because I can.
J/K
You must have mistaken those marked as construed to be genuine, they are not, my intention was to make a mockary of one Dallas Gilbert. et al.
But make no mistake, I do appreciate the work that you have done here, I did not intend to belittle your work. The fallen tree was deliberate, the circles weren't.

I have seen similar branch twists near areas of old stumps. The very rotten stumps had been torn apart with debris at the bottom. When I also picked through them, I found a supply of grub worms, termites, mice, ect. I know bears do that as they forage through out the afternoon. I have never seen any bear sign in these areas. But I do beleive that the branch twists are a marker for something. How long ago was the twist made? Could you still smell the fresh exspossed flesh of the branch? Also, where ther any fallen trees near the twisted branch? Rotten or diseased tree often fall during the winter and sometimes collied with the shorter trees on the way down braking them at ther tops. At what height was the twist on the branch/tree?

Elder, the break was only 3 days old at the most, but over a day or so old. the main break we found was at about 6 feet off of the ground, the other lower, there were no fallen trees or anything. it was just off a trail and it was clean and clear around it. also i wish he was getting his fiber a nice scat pile would be nice to see

If you use Nighthunter as a size reference you could tell us how tall he is...............
BTW why is he walking like an Egyptian

Somebody always beats me to it...
When looking at something like this, always consider alternative explainations.
For instance: coyote chases raccoon...raccoon climbs tree to escape...said tree proves insufficient to support said coons body weight...tree branch bends to the point of breaking...coyote eats raccoon...
Researcher examines site for evidence of such.
There are lots of possibilities. Try to examine them all before coming to conclusions.

Nighthunter is 5'4" or so tall. As for the and explination well...the area is just off a trail about 1 meter at the most and the branches are think and twisted around themselves about 3 times. we tried to do this and like I said we were unable to turn in around our selves. Addationaly with in no more then 3 meters of the area were 2 more of these twist, 2 on the smae tree and then one further down and lower to the ground. also he is walking like an egyptian because his upper hand is where the break is on the tree.

I talked to nighthunter yesterday about his finds.
To me he is very knowledgable about identifying or distingishing between a windthrown or heavy snowfell limb and something that took quite a bit of force to twist.
I have worked in the SilverStar and Yacolt areas, even done three to four BFRO reports in the area. It would seem to be a very nice research area for someone, if folks within WA State haven't already done some type of test runs around that valley.
I gave him my opinion and some of my research spots... seems that NightHunter and his folks are on the right track, he was able to find the same contacts that I did while in the area.
Have fun with it and when I become available again Nighthunter, would gladly assist you in any way bud.

Hi guys and gals,
I can vouch for the twisted trees. I was there. I'm the other guy. We had been all over this area and these were the only twisted trees we saw. There was no elk sign and some deer sign within a quarter of a mile. In February within three miles of the twists I saw tracks. In April while camping within an eighth of a mile of the twists my camper got shook at 4:40 AM followed by wood knocks. In October while hunting for golden Chantrelle mushrooms my friend and I found a possible nest site within an eighth of a mile from the twists. This "nest" site is where we set up a camera trap and bait on 21 December. Also in October, my shroom hunting friend had a sighting and I heard vocolizations by Larch mountain which is about four or five miles from the twisted trees. These twists were fresh within a day or so. We found no hairs. I cut two of the twists off for my personal storage. This was hardwood and I didn't have enough strength to twist even half the diameter that we found. On two of these occasions I made reports with the BFRO and they investigated, but they don't seem too interested. Oh well. If I knew how to post pictures to this comment, I would.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the comment. The area that I frequent and have had these experiences in is a five? mile triangle between Silver Star mountain, Larch Mountain, and Larch prison in the Soutern Washington Cascades. Silver Star and Larch mountains are snowed in right now. We tried to make it to Larch mountain, but got only about half way even in the jeep. The storm we got a couple of weeks ago will take a while to melt off. I do plan on going back to Larch soon. I use to travel these woods often alone. I've only lived here since December 2002 and being from Georgia I spent a lot of time in the woods there. ......But, these woods are very different. After I started spending more time in these woods I realized that protection was in order. My friends have had run-ins with black bears. I didn't get the "hairs on the back of the neck" feeling until this year in February when I saw two tracks next to the Tarbell trail. Since then, I have promised my wife that I won't traipse in the woods alone anymore. She's right. It just isn't smart in my opinion to go out in the Cascades alone. I also carry protection in a large caliber. I carry it for protection only. I will tell you though, I had this large caliber protection with me when my camper-van got shook up and the fear that was produced inside me rendered me paralyzed. I think that these creatures can instill this kind of fear. It didn't shake my van again and I'm sure I would have gotten into the "fight" mode if it tried to break in, but that proved to not be necessary.
I've talked to a few field investigators and they tell me that it is natural to shy from the woods after an experience. They also say that with a littlle time the fear dissapates and the woods don't seem so spooky.
I've been in the woods in these areas quite a lot since the van incident and about half the time I get the creeped out feeling. Other times, I feel really at peace like I use to. I tell you, though, I now pay particular attention to that bad feeling. I am also much more aware of my surroundings and animal sign.
My wife got me a set of binoculars that take photos and a good camcorder with night shot for Christmas so I'm anxious to put them to use. For some reason since all this stuff started I can't stay away from the woods for more than a week or two without wanting to go back. Strange how that bug bites. I'm not sure that I want to see one of theses creatures up close though. I definitely believe that they are there.
Later,
klp ;-)

Callidus, Nighthunter and anyone else in western wa; you guys are somewhat close to where I live. I would sure like to hear more about what you finding in your research area. I mentioned before about the rotten stumps getting torn up. Did you notice any in the area of the branch twist? Did you guys camera trap the area since then? Always exciting to hear about the happenings close to home. I am new to the forum and it would appear that this is the primary way to stay in contact. Good luck with future research.
