Full Version: Gearing Up For An Investigation

Well guys I'm pretty pumped. My friend has a friend whose family has about 100 acres.
When they get back from overseas we are supposed to go investigate this land. My friends friend said that there have been some strange, unexplainable incounters and believes that they may have experienced sasquatch. Don't know many details, but this is still new in the making. My plan right now is to gather topo maps and arial photos of the property. I want to heavily search all the creeks since there is some speculation that the big guy likes to travel on creeks and also likes a diet of racoons. I need some help. I also want to check draws because other wildlife like to travel here, but what other terrian features should we investigate? I would like to try some calling/blasting. What is a good CD of sasquatch sounds to buy? Also, most call blasters (as used in predator hunting) cost around $250. Could a regular CD boombox be used? I haven't heard much of observing sasquatch from trees. How do you think using a climbing stand while blasting calls would work? I don't know if any roads run through the property; we may be backpacking in and out. Would it be best to set up a base camp, or migrate and bivuac the entire time? Any other suggestions and tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks guys, swampfox.

swampfox, sounds like you've got a good adventure in front of you. Take a look at this research operation report posted at the TBRC site. It goes into great detail about how our TX neighbors are doing their investigations. Good luck!

Hey swamp fox.. dunno if this will help or not,,but here goes..

There very few stories and less in tee way of any evidence BF eats racoons,, the largest thing theyve actually ben said on repeated occasions to eat are mice and what have been termed ' rock rodents" out west in the 60's.
Probably the best you can sodo is what youre planning,,hitting the creeks and such since if for no other reason the ground is probably better suited for finding any prints.
For call blasting a regular boom box is fine. The one I used to use was simply that a stereo hooked through an amp to a car battery. No noticable differnce as far as I could tell, specially over great distances.

base camp or bivouacing is entirely up to you.. bivouacing is probably better the fiisrt itime aout to get a lay of the land as opposed to just looking at a map helps put the area and the terrain in a better layout in your mind,, all IMO of course,, everyones method varies.
Huntster
Good luck.

Is this in bayou country in Lousiana?
swampfox
Thanks guys. You've helped alot; any other suggestions are welcome.

Huntster, this "excursion" is actually going to be in Arkansas. I don't want to say where exactly because it is not my property.

Thanks again.

First of all, good luck, and I envy you cuz you have a fresh trip ahead of you! From what you describe, sounds like an unspoiled and hopefully target rich area to search, as well. I can't help wondering...how might a silent and stealthy approach work...? Anyway, Have fun, and good luck again. -PF

The bigguy's got to be a BAD ASS too eat a racoon,, them suckers can tear a pack of coon hounds up iffen they're in the mood to do so!!!!

Swampfox, you should be able to check 100 arces in a weekend with no problem
just get your maps ready with key points of interest, map out your routes.

Sometimes when I go out in my area I will go for 1/4 mile stop and turn around and back track a 100 yards or so to see if theres any new tracks since I passed by. ohmy.gif

I saw a newspaper story where in Georgia armadillo was described as a favorite food of BF. In this thread raccoon was described as a favorite food.

Just kind of wondering where the information came from? As crewchf advised a coon is one mean animal and pound for pound can hold it’s own with a pack of coon dogs.

The same place likely that deer kills came into existence ,Peppersfarm. Wishful thinking on the part of someone who found a dead one and had bigfoot on the brain at the time. It became a idea, and the idea became the institution.

If I may recommend... A small ruler, or tape measure. If there is anything you want to photograph, place the device in the photo frame with the evidence. You'll have an accurate measure of scale in the photo.

A pet peeve of mine are photos of "evidence" with no clue as to size. You can also use dimes, quarters, soda cans, cigarettes, and/or any other universally sized item.

The first 24hrs. I plan to be as stealthy as possible. I don't have any high dollar scentlock suites, but I plan to use scent-away spray and possibly a cover scent. I hope the skeeters aint bad, deet is a bad idea if you're trying not to be winded. I also plan to be fully camoflauged, face and all. I want to try to maintain sound discipline the first 24 hours. During the first 24 hours I want to cover all areas of intrest (there are a couple of caves). At night, I plan to continue to maintain sound disciplne and observe. I want to sleep most of the next day, then start calling that night, and stay up all night. I've read too many reports of the big guy coming around the campsite after everyone has settled in for the night. Maybe actually try to ambush the campsite. I plan to carry my 30.-30. (don't have a 45.-70 govt) and side arm, while my friend carries a his 12ga. and side arm. Not that I plan to shoot anything, but the Boy Scout motto is be prepared.

I have some equipment questions. My camera finally gave up the ghost, so I'm thinking about a digital camera. What would ya'll recomend? What should be a mega pixel minimum for good distance shots? How about mini disc recorders? Do I need an external mic? What is a good sasquatch sounds CD?

What have I forgot? Thanks again.

Agreed. What's needed is a roll-up or foldable piece of transparent vinyl or other plastic with embedded gridlines at 1/4" (say) intervals that can be placed over a print (or some other spoor) when it is photographed. That way print-photos could be digitally manipulated by being normalized in size and then compared to a standard-normalized grid sheet to see where various foot landmarks on different prints occur. Hopefully they'll fall in the same location. Also, this would simplify comparisons of toe shapes and configurations.

I've been looking for on the net for such an item, without success. I urge others with better web skills, or with knowledge or suspicion of where such an item might be found, to report back. Even a rigid plastic item would be useful, despite having to be kept in base camp.

Nobody had much to say about minidisc recorders  I found this site, they have some tips and stuff about field recording equipment if anyone is interested.

I've read a number of those reports as well. Do field investigators generally set up cameras around the campsite when asleep or away for the night? It seems that Bigfoot is curious about campsites, so much so that they will enter the campsite knowing that there are humans in the tents.

It sounds like you've got a solid plan Swampfox. Good luck.
swampfox
I haven't read much about surveyling the camp site while people sleep, except a report or two where folks have left a sound recorder running. I would like to get up a tree with my climbing stand and ambush the campsite at night. I could certainly see why they would be curious. The smell of the campfire smoke and the sound of people talking from a distance is somthing different from the everyday routine. Maybe I'll put some 60/40 deer/hog sausage over the fire for a little extra enticement . Cest' Bon new_guitar.gif :bf:
Roadrunner
Why doesn't someone want to search and shoot one of these things. If they're as rare as they seem, putting a camera out in the hope it comes to you isn't.....ah forget it!
Dutch
Roadrunner, please read the rest of the thread. Swampfox is going to be proactively searching (can't comment on his intentions regarding shooting one?) but everyone's got to sleep sometime. Given that there are reports of bigfoot coming into and around camps at night it would seem logical to set up cameras if available.
swampfox
We will be carring firearms; rifle.shotgun and side arms. Though they will be mainly for the unexpected. I always thought that I would wait for the moment to decide whether or not to shoot. If I feel like I or my crew is in danger, there wont be much to think about. I don't really like the idea of not knowing whether or not my shot(s) will do any good (if I owned a 45.-70, things would be a little different). I feel confident that if I were to get one good shot with my 30-30, my partner and I could hold off a charge with shotgun and side arm fire. 30-30 is darn good gun to use from 150yds and closer; I think it would deliver more energy at 100yds than a 300mag or 7mm mag. Hopefully, if any shots have to be taken, one good shot will be taken and then we can remain still so that we do not give away our position. Call me crazy, everyone else does.
