I've got a bunch more, but have to run...I'll try posting them tomorrow if I get a chance...here's an interesting "kill" story. I wonder what the hell this was? Tail too bushy for a chimp?

Right on, Tirademan!!

I love these...especially the way they used the language back in the late 1800s....some classic lines in these....the one where the boys saw it but haven't returned to the hill....the policemen "repaired" to the location, etc....
excellent....
too bad that one had a knife, some clothes and a fire....probably was an escaped lunatic...you think? or they got the descriptions wrong...because he sure vocalized a family out of their home!! laugh.gif

BFDad, yeah, I wonder about some of these descriptions as well. IMHO, they get it right about as much as modern observers do, meaning that much variation is to be expected. The old adage, if 2 people view the same thing...? Was it a knife, or a stick? Interesting that there are several accounts where they are seen carrying clubs!

I take all these with a grain of salt, especially the more "literary" accounts. But, what I find the most intriguiging is the OVERALL nature of these stories.

It seems that in many, many places, over many years, people have been confronting (and been confronted by!) "mystery animals." Now, some of these may have "usual" explanations, but many delve into that "panther, catamount, giant dog" rationalization that, to me, is just convieniant opinion. They want an understandable explaination like most humans do when encountering the strange. Not to mention cops keeping posse's at bay!

I think the descriptions of the sounds are most interesting. As for the clothes, could they mistake fur for clothes? Remember, they usually explain that these are "men gone wild" so I can see them making that leap. Many accounts of today include the first reaction "why is that hunter wearing a snowmobile suit?" kind of thang.

The old accounts try to explain these sightings away. This, I believe, may cause the actual accounts to seem less credible.

Anyway, on to posting more!

OK, a 1961 WI search for "it." Then a follow-up declaring "wolverine!"

OK, now this one may very well be the wolverine that they describe. I just think it would be an interesting film to view!

They did say 100 yards away and fuzzy character. The guy talks about how "very strong and exceptionally fast" the animal was and they first thought it a bear. Now the tail is a problem, but again, was it a tail?

Also note how they say wolverines haven't been in Wisconsin since 1870...not one, really? hmmm...sound like humans know everything about nature.

OK, the next 3 are accounts I found while searching on the word "Bigfoot." These are some of the earliest mentions of "bigfoot" I found, with the exception of "Bigfoot Wallace." What I find fascinating is the fact that people were finding "bigfoot" tracks and then explaining what made them. Obviously, they killed some big bears. But these "posse with reward searches" for bears that have killed 1,000 head seem a little odd to me. I'm no bear expert, but I wonder if all those "bigfoot" tracks were, indeed, bear tracks? Just my 2¢

1903 Bigfoot bear killed.

A tale of "bigfoot" the wolf killed. Seems that 'Ol Bigfoot is the smartest wolf, bear, etc...

Now this one, I realize, could be just what it purports. But what I find interesting again is that they found "unusually large footprints" at one location. There could have been a bare-footed bigfoot burgler...I guess.
