What a thread! Yet it doesn't surprise me one bit!
Thank you, Tirademan!! I've only read a few at this point...the first one was extraordinary! the pursuit...shot in the leg and capture was an incredible story. Lots of great lines in there, too... "the Indians say they are harmless", etc. Just found the thread. Was out of town when you had to return to Wisconsin. Condolences and good thoughts from my family to you and yours. Sounds like the matriach of your family lived a wonderful life - esp. having her faculties until her passing. Take care! - Tom |

OK, here's another WOW! article that I found today. From the Washington Post, a killed "mountain devil" that was adept at climbing and was 70 feet high in the trees when shot near Shoalwater Bay WA sometime before 1914. Amongst other details, like brown fur, and long and straight legs, it is described as "a plantigrade animal!" (as in humans and bears, walking on the entire bottom of their feet!). Not to mention, they didn't know what it was.
Another example of "in the hands PROOF"...where's that damn "carcass!" Anybody want to dig around Jawbone's Saloon in Shoalwater? tirademan

OK, so maybe that last one was just some odd tree climbing animal...who knows. Here's another more recent article I found from 1976 that I posted to the Bossburg thread.

I'm not so sure that a Panther makes all those sounds?...but I'm not an expert by any means...just thought this story had some "Sasquatch" possibilites in it...maybe not.

This one regarding a "tree devil" from India is bordering on fiction...but the description of the animal is very interesting...walking, or shuffling human like?

QUOTE(JayleeD @ Jul 29 2004, 01:56 PM) I really enjoy reading these articles. Thanks. Thanks for the thanks...I get a kick out of finding them too! It might be interesting to note that I've been studying where they claim they captured the 8' 3" wildman in the very first post. It seems it was captured near St. Anthony (which is in the middle of Minneapolis!) or near the headwaters of the Mississippi? Anyone with a good understanding of the cliffs and caves in that area want to help? That damn left column being cut off doesn't help! But I thought it might be important to figure it out. Now, what happened to the damn thing(s) is what I want to know! tirademan |

Here's a thread I started about some teens who died in caves in that area. Think these might be the same ones? The caves that is....

Wow, I missed that article... Very cool!
It was kind of difficult to interpret the first column but it appears to reference the Falls of St. Anthony which is now is in downtown Minneapolis. It also seems that they talk of the St. Peters River, which is the old name for the Minnesota River. The Minnesota River confluences the Mississippi River at the border of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Fort Snelling is located there and was the gateway to the western frontier in that area of the country. It was a very rugged and wild area at the time of the story. The caves that Jaylee is talking about are in this area, and although most of the existing caves are manmade it’s more than possible that this was the area that the author wrote about. The are many bluffs and hills in this area and it sure meets the description. |

QUOTE(Huntster @ Jul 29 2004, 03:57 PM) TiradeMan, excellent work! How did you find those gems? Huntster, I came across this website: http://www.newspaperarchive.com ...and subscribed after my "free search" turned up a bunch of matches for "wild man of the woods" After that, it was just searching on any terms I thought they may have used in the past. Mystery animal, mountain devil, bigfoot, sasquatch, hairy giant, ape man, ape boy, monster, giant, all that stuff...anyone got any more ideas? Just think of all the newspaper microfiche that Libraries have buried away! Interestingly, I've come across many, many panther/cat sighting stories that always end up with "well, they were probably mistaken, there hasn't been any large cats around here for blah, blah blah!" Seems many animals decide to fool humans. I've also run across a few of sea serpent/lake creature stories. I'll keep posting them as I go through what I've found. I may try to compile them all into a downloadable PDF like I did the Library of Congress "Strange Howls" stories I found: http://www.mcclean.org tirademan |

It is quite an interesting account for sure. I'm in Eau Claire, WI right now visiting my folks, so I've had the maps out wondering! Have also been looking at a few places in the Blue Hills of WI that may be worth checking out. They'd found some footprints there a few years ago. There's a Devil's creek in that area, and a ski hill...not quite mountains, but for Wisconsin it may be the right kind of place. Also, soooo many swamps. Anyway, I'll keep posting what I find...I've got to get my $80 worth! tirademan |
