Hi Rob,

just a newbie here, but was curious about your encounter. i grew up just minutes from Severn Run Park and fished there a few times not far from the General's Highway overpass. Seems an unlikely BF habitat. Pretty sparsely vegitated- maybe the wrong time of the year- early spring when they stocked the stream. The Arundel Mall sighting certainly adds alot more clout. i suppose you're refering to the Gambrils side of 97 or perhaps the underpass to the 32 entrance ramp.

Thanks for the report, shocked that there might be a BF in the vac. of my old stomping grounds. blink.gif

Wayne, in my years of study of that area, i hypothesis that they use the Severn Run area as a travel corridor mainly. They seem to go between the backside of Ft Meade down to the Severn river. All the rivers in the area have the animals pass thru or stay in the area year round. But i feel the main area is the Meade training ground and the Pax wildlife refuge. LOTS of undisturbed area there.

Old Mill Bottom road runs between 170 and Burns Crossing rd. Gambrills side i think.

Stopped on Veteran's Highway overpass yesterday and wandered down to the run for a look around. Alot's changed since i fished the creek. Walked over beyond the 97 overpass' and came up against some flooded area/swamp. Some animal paths here and there. One had some interesting spor along it. Animal-like (dark with berries and stuff), but more human sized. Big dump for a racoon cool.gif ! Didn't notice any large tracks, some deer perhaps and racoon/possum, too.

Driving home passed Fort Meade and NSA. You're right, lots of protected forest. Makes me also think of the Laurel Swamps on the way to Laurel Shopping Center (where George Wallace was shot). Think that's along 175??

Guess my question would be, how to connect the FM forest complex with Arundel Mall? Also, if they do wander as far as the Severn River proper, say at Indian Landing, That area is frequented by horsebackers and hikers.

Anyway, if these animals are being pushed out of their old habitats, say further north and funneling down to AA county, gvmnt lands would make a relatively safe harbour. There may also be some abandoned underground bunkers and perhaps tunnel complexes for them to take refuge.

ilex,
good points all.

I too went down to the a couple of weeks ago for fishing on the first day after they re-stocked it.
I was not paying any attention to the ground unfortunately since I had not given too much thought to a BF hanging around my neighborhood (Odenton). But after some more research I found out that our county had the highest number of sightings. Three of them within a couple of miles. ohmy.gif

As for traveling from Arundel Mills to this area, it would probably be no problem since a friend of mine lives off the Severn river which starts somewhere near the mall (I think on the East side of Ridge Rd).

Just travel the creek...

They cross under the Vet Hwy, by walking IN the creek. I spotted a track in the bottom a couple years back. Also spotted a track in the sand on the eastern side of the bridge.

From that spot to the mall is no big brainer, walk up the Run to the Amtrak tracks (Penn line), then walk the tracks or beside the tracks to the mall.

They used to be spotted by BWI in the woods, in the woods behind Old Mill, and i have a verbal report from a waterman who spotted two digging up clams along the Severn river.

But i still think the big rivers are the best habitat for them, the Patuxent, the Patapsco and Gunpowder are fantasic areas.

And here is Pete Travers sketch, done in a different artistic style, going for the features, not so much the actual position during the sighting.

[edit] Please keep in mind, the proportions are from the waist up, the legs, since i couldnt see them, are way out of proportion. But the head and shoulder area are really close to the proportions i saw on Thor. smile.gif

Rob,
Sweet! thumbup.gif

In the evening, yeah I'd say pucker factor seeing this fellow.

Walk along the track from the Severn Run then pass under the Reece Rd. bridge. Go about a mile and take a left off the tracks and head to the Mall area.....

I got to thinkin maybe some of the engineers would have seen something but those trains are so %)#( noisy the BF's would probably just blend in to the brush at the side when they hear them coming.

I drive that road every morning at 0345.... I always keep my eyes peeled!

Rob,

Can see that the MARC or the Amtrak corridor could serve well. There are quite a few homes that back up to those. You know, yards with chainlink and barbed wire. An 800lb 12 foot guy would havta really be carefull to not get noticed more often along those stretches.

Guess it's getting a little easier to imagine a small group of these animals surviving undetected in AA/Howard Counties somehow. Sounds like a good place for some camera traps- along the run perhaps. Wonder if AACC has any :willies:

This is the place where camera traps can be placed. There is a narrow passage under 97 and Veteran's Highway which runs along 97 on the east side. This would be the only place where a Sas. could reach the Severn River from the Odenton/Gambrils part of the wildlife refuge. There are a few small willows on the creekbank behind the corrigated steel retaining walls forming the creek banks under the V. Highway overpass.

Here are some pix of the overpasses:

Both overpasses side by side. The old Veteran's Highway to the right. A Sas. would have to wade thru at that point.

The 97 overpass is more open.

Veteran's Highway underpass.

Unknown spor sample found nearby. The quarter is for reference.

Yup, good pics of the overpass area. thumbup.gif Thats a pinch point, or funnel point in thier travel route. Thats where i've found tracks IN the stream before. Put your cameras up high, and conceal them from humans. Theres alot of human activity right near those bridges. I've stomped all over that area before. I almost set up a blind on the slope overlooking the west side of I-97, with night vision, but could never get around to doing it.

My hypothesis, based on approx 3-4 years of study of that area, is that there is a population (based on track finds, eyewitness reports) of at least one adult male (Thor) two breeding females with young , all black in color (the juvi tracks are very simular to the adult females tracks) and one older unknown gender (prob male) that stays close to the clan, with grey facial and head hair. Their basic range seems to be from the Severn river, running up the Severn Run and into the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge area, branching up towards BWI airport.

The most recent sighting (this past fall) reported to me was of an unknown gendered, black in color animal, walking just inside the brush during a rainstorm (light rain, wipers on intermit) along rt 170 between rt 174 and rt 32, close to the new firehouse.

There have been other reports of the animals in the other pinch point, where my sighting occured. Old Mill Bottom rd, which runs between rt 170 and Burns Crossing rd. it is in this area that i have had another sighting, and found a few tracks and other sign. Be careful of the rooster farm. They tend to be overly suspicous of people they dont know.

If any of you want to get together for a weekend evening or afternoon, let me know, we'll make something happen. smile.gif I still have family in the general area, and with enough foreplanning, i may be able to make a full weekend out of it.

Rob,

Good Plan!! :dancedude:

In the meantime i'd like to know if anyone out there knows what's involve in setting up camera traps. Maybe there's someone who has one that could be rented/borrowed for this purpose :willynilly:

Rob,

Severn Run Regional Sat

Here's a sat view of the region. i've shown the "Severn Run Corridor" in orange and the "Rail Road Corridor" in purple. The red "X"'s show where sightings or tracks have been reported. The Run seems to originate in a development just SE of Arundel Mills Mall. If a sas wandered into that housing dev. it may have been spooked and in a panic took off in the direction of the the mall. The report states that he was passing the contractors trailer running- perhaps looking for more forest.

Does this seem probable? Where did the other sightings occur?

Jimbo,

i noticed you had a possible sighting. Was it in this region. i'd like to get all possible sightings and evidence mapped out.

Rob,

Is that center right red X near where you saw Thor?

Saw somewhere on another thread that a high spot with a good view of area was used to monitor human whereabouts before sas' venturing in a given direction. Of course the vantage point itself needs to be out of human eyeshot.

Maybe these guys know ways of keeping track of our presence and only venture out when the entire area is clear.

Are there any high areas with a clear view of the region that you know of?Somewhere relatively remote for humans? new_whistle.gif

BTW. my aim is to try to help understand these animals and appreciate them for the wonderful creatures they are. Hope noone ever catchs or kills one. They seem to be peaceful and harmless to humans. Which is a GOOD THING!!! sad.gif

Wayne,
here is the URL for my story..

As for the picture, the DNR stocks trout at the Severn Run River. If you follow the Severn Run corridor from the "RR" corridor, South East about one inch (on the photo) at the point that it heads up north is where they stock.

OT: Heading to London on Jun 22... Anyone know of some good pubs?

Jimbo,

thought about the trout, too. My understanding is that there are some native brown trout in one of the feeder streams on the Preserve. Quite unusual for Balto. DC corridor. No doubt they go for a little sushi now and then. laugh.gif

Makes me think of the bad odor complaint of so many Sas witnesses. Wonder if they prey on skunks and as a result keep getting sprayed. :yuck:

London's pretty cool place. Was there in 81' breifly. Hope you enjoy.

No, thats near New Cut rd. (the red X) . I saw Thor just off the edge of where the blue "32" is. To the right of rt 170 ( the straight line running north-south in the pic)

From the blue 32, go right to 170, go north to the red line, go east a quarter of an inch.
